At press time, Boyne USA announced the first annual Celebrity Players Tour National Pro-Am for July 21-25 at The Heather course at Boyne Highlands. Approximately 40 celebrities and sports figures will compete for a $200,000 purse and raise money for charity. Such sports names as Bill Laimbeer, Mario Lemieux, Jim MaMahon, as well as actor William Devane will compete in the event. Tickets for spectators will be available at the gate or by calling 1-800-GO-BOYNE.... High Pointe GC and the Waterfront Inn celebrated a 10-year anniversary last month at the traverse city area golf course. Under the able leadership of Mike Meindertsma, High Pointe has made some nice improvements to the course, including making the 10th hole more accommodating off the tee to average golfers. And the course conditions are very good, especially the greens. Published by Triumph books for $14.95, it's a bargain and a must-fit-in for the travel bag......The state's biggest turf happening is the Michigan Turfgrass Field Day to be held Aug. 18 at the Hancock Turfgrass Reseach Center. call 1-517-321-1660....Sleeping Bear Press of chelsea will release the new autobiography of Ben Wright in August called "Good Bounces & Bad Lies." I've seen an advance copy and it's a good read. I miss Wright's colorful and rich vocabulary on television as well as his keen insight on the European PGA Tour. Graham works with a host of pros including David Stockton and is highly regarded for her research on Tour players and thier preformance. Defending champ is Lisa Walters.... The Oldsmobile Scramble is introducing a new "women's only" event in selected parts of the U.S., including Michigan. Last month, the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine released a study saying cigar smokers are twice as likely as nonsmokers to get cancer of the throat, mouth and lungs. Ditto for increasing one's chances of developing heart or pulmonary disease. When will the cigar smoking fad on the links and in the clubhouse face up to reality and sound health practices?... Defending Foremost Senior Champion George Archer says fellow hip replacement compatriot--Jack Nicklaus--probably came back too soon from surgery. Archer says his is "a titanium model covered by ceramic" while the Golden Bear's new hip is "all ceramic." But by this time next year, Archer feels Nicklaus' hip will be better than ever....
