George Zimmermann New Vice President at Travel Michigan
To George Zimmermann, the new VP of Travel Michigan, his job is simple, "increase visitor spending and it what we are doing does not do that, then we should stop doing it." Just two months into the job, he feels that he need to accomplish three things before he can start making changes. He needs to get to know the people, the research and the product of Michigan tourism. Zimmermann, formerly the Director of Tourism for the State of Ohio, is a boater. "I have been on a golf course, but what I do not golf courses would not necessarily be thought of as golf." He knows that golf is a major part of Michigan out state revenue, some 300 million last year, and he wants to continue the role of a Michigan golf consultant. He also notes the impact the web is having on the industry. "Our phone calls are down, but our web traffic is way up. Our first moves will be to take the call center out of Prince Edward Island and bring it back in house. We will also revamp our web site, making it more user friendly. We'll never be done with our website, the technology is changing too rapidly. Zimmermann indicated that they will be doing more with partnerships, citing a new thrust by both Travel Michigan and the Detroit Metropolitan CVB in targeting Cleveland. He also mentioned a new partnership with GolfSwitch, the online golf reservation company out of Arizona.
