Moose Ridge: Destined for Greatness
by Mike Duf

Raymond Hearn Golf Designs, Inc. doesn't take designing a golf course lightly. As a matter of fact, through an intense design development process, Hearn's courses incorporate ideas and principles from a wide range of perspectives including a harmonious blend with the surrounding environment. Moose Ridge Golf Course, located in Green Oak Township (11801 Doane Rd., South Lyon, (248) 446-9030) in Livingston County, fulfills all of the goals set by Hearn. It is carved out of 230 acres of naturally undulating, mature wooded land with natural wetlands and wildlife. It is an incredible piece of property. From the moment you tee it up on the first hole you know you are in store for a magnificent golf experience. "If you're looking for an ÔUp North' feeling, you will find it here," says Rudy Catal, Director of Golf.

The official opening is this spring and for such a young course you will be impressed with the maintenance and upkeep. Once the fairways mature and thicken this unspoiled landscape will be at its best. The entire course offers bent grass tees, greens and fairways along with brilliant white USGA Best sand bunkers

Moose Ridge offers nothing but natural beauty and privacy with elevated tees, stadium banked fairways surrounded by mature forests. Every hole offers a unique challenge. Five tees at each hole provide maximum challenge for every level of golfer with a continuous paved cart path system. There are truly some spectacular holes that have been well conceived for everyone's golfing pleasure. The course utilizes all of its natural features while providing a visually pleasurable experience. Pick a favorite hole, perhaps No. 4 a 592 yard (630 from the championship) par-5 which takes in to account nearly every shot in your bag, a strategic drive, lay up, water hazard, waste bunker and trees to navigate this stunning hole. Moose Ridge's four finishing holes may be unsurpassed. Number 16 a 179-yard (mid-range, followed by par-3) is an awesome hole from an elevated tee that requires a precise shot down a narrow approach area in to a small green with water on the right and trees on the left. Check your bogie bag after this one.

Moose Ridge offers a full-service golf shop, upscale practice facility with grass tees, target greens, bunkers, chipping area and putting green. The full-service 10,000 square-foot clubhouse is due to open early summer.

Hearn makes it clear that the "intent of our designs is to create a golfing environment that will challenge both the expert and the novice golfer. We work very hard during the design development stage to ensure that each hole has the proper balance of risk and reward. Strategic golf holes that make golfers have to think is a critical component to a great golf course." Courses have to earn their greatness and stand the test of time. Moose Ridge is destined, in due time, to become one.
