Your Old Kentucky Home
by Art McCafferty

When you cross the bridge going from southern Indiana to Louisville, Kentucky, you will note a definite change in personal communication. The pace of speech seems to slow down and the Southern charm and hospitality we hear about in Michigan really seems to kick in once you arrive on the Kentucky side. The southernmost northern city and the northernmost southern city, Louisville, Kentucky is an unique blend of old and new, charm and sophistication, urban and antique. We were in town to meet with Clarke Fenimore of Quail Chase GC. They have been very aggressive in promoting Louisville golf to the Michigan market the past couple of years.

While there, we stayed at the Galt House, one of Kentucky's finest business and vacation hotels, and one of a number that caters to the golf market. You can find them and their golf packages by going to http://www.gotolouisville.com

The service at the Galt House http://galthouse.com was extraordinary and the views of the Ohio river from our room were spectacular. The Galt House is located in the core of the city and is close to many attractions. The Louisville Slugger Museum, the Kentucky Center for the Arts and Belle and the new Louisville waterfront provided an interesting morning of site seeing. The city is clean and the buildings are well kept. There is also a great deal of historic preservation going on and many of the classic buildings are getting a face lift.

Quail Chase Club House

Quail Chase located, about 10 minutes from the Galt House, is a 27 hole course that receives more play than any course in the area. Owner Clarke Fenimore, has designed and built over 30 courses in his lifetime, but this is the one he has held onto. Recently Quail Chase acquired a four star rating from Golf Digest. It is an honor they intend to keep.. Maintenance bills are high, but needed as the course is only closed by bad weather about 20 times a year. We visited in late November and it was a balmy 70 degrees.

Fenimore is a person that really thinks outside the tee box. Last year, he passed on local advertising for his course and ran ads in the Wall Street Journal and Sports Illustrated instead. When describing the merits of his course he will always discuss the City of Louisville and its charm and attractions.

Clarke Fenimore

Besides Quail Chase, there are a number of courses in the Louisville area that offer golf packages. Hidden Creek is a property that is located in Sellersburg, Indiana, just before the bridge. The course offers a challenge for every golfer from the novice to professional. Interestingly, the front nine has a five acre lake, while the back nine is nestled in dense woods with several holes running along the banks of Silver Creek. Maywood, located in historic Bardstown, was selected by Golf Digest as one of the Best New Courses of 1995. The Bull, located in Richmond, is nestled in the heart of Kentucky horse country and stretches over 120 rolling acres of woods, water and wildlife. The bent grass tees, fairways, and greens offer excellent playing surfaces.
