William Chase, a person that likes golf courses but does not golf, is the person responsibile for bringing another Michigan golf course on line this spring. Chase, owner of Wolverine Products, Inc., a plastic injection molding company, has built his new course in Casco Twp. in southwest St. Clair County.

Chase selected Jim Grissim, of Grissim and Metz to design his course. It is Grissim's first design. Grissim, president of Walnut Creek of Oldsmobile Classic fame, has designed Golden Hawk with the water gods in mind. The front nine has water on six of the holes with the back coming in a little friendlier with four. The terrain is flat and mainly open, the exception being one hole that is tree lined. The course, on a tight 130 acres, will play to 6400+ yards.

There will be a lighted practice area, with good distance on the target laden range. There will also be some bunkers for sand wedge practice as well as a roomy putting green.

Jim Cole, formerly an assistant at Tanglewood, has his first head pro job. Jim is an EMU grad who decided that golf and not teaching was his future. Richard "Red " Bell, course superintendent, brings 30 years of experience to Golden Hawk.

Golden Hawk will target Port Huron, Mt. Clemens and St. Clair for most of its trade. However, they expect to get their share of Canadian players as well. They opened nine late last year and were happy with the response. They already have 12 leagues signed up for this year. They are also in the process of planning and building a log structure that will serve as their pro shop, grill and banquet space.

Golden Hawk is located off I-94, exit 248. Go east off exit 248 one mile to County Line Road, turn north or left and go two miles to Meisner (which is 28 Mile Rd), turn right go a mile and a quarter. You will find the course just over the expressway. 810-727-4681.
