WESTERN AMATEUR LEAVING POINT O'WOODS AFTER 2008
===================================================
GOLF, Ill. - Following the 2008 Western Amateur, the Point O'Woods Golf & Country Club's 38-year tradition of annually hosting the prestigious national golf championship will come to an end, John Kaczkowski, Western Golf Association vice president of tournaments recently announced.The WGA's current five-year contract with Point O'Woods expires following the 2008 tournament. The WGA is exploring the possibility of rotating the Western Amateur among a handful of Chicago-area clubs and Point O'Woods beginning in 2009.

"Our goal is to move it around to a select group of clubs that support the Western Golf Association and the Evans Scholarship Program and also feature quality, championship venues capable of challenging the world's top amateur golfers," Kaczkowski said.

The new plan is being heralded as a win-win by both the WGA and Point O'Woods. "Allowing us the flexibility to include four Chicago area venues with the Point will provide more exposure for the prestigious Western Amateur," says Kaczkowski."We've enjoyed an excellent relationship with the members and staff at Point O'Woods, and we expect that relationship will continue even though the Point will no longer host the WesternAmateur on an annual basis," noted Kaczkowski. "We're looking forward to bringing the Western Amateur championship to the Chicago area for the first time since 1952, when the tournament was hosted by Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park." Point O'Woods G. & C.C. in Benton Harbor, first hosted the Western Amateur in 1963. The championship returned to Point O'Woods in 1965 and then was anchored at the club starting in 1971.

MICHIGAN GOLFER ON THE ROAD
=============================
Orlando
Ah, the sun. It was a great week in Florida and it really got the golf juices flowing again. Of course, the Michigan migration will continue as the PGA Merchandise Show holds court this week. We were at Walt Disney World Resort for a meeting with The Running Network, a group of running and fitness magazines.

Walt Disney World is a couple of courses short in its golf inventory, as it sold the Pete Dye Eagle Pines and the Tom Fazio Osprey Ridge course to the Four Seasons group for further development. Word has it, that the land that was originally purchased for $100 per acre, sold for $300,000 per acre. And how was your day? The land will be for a new resort community. Eagle Pines is now closed, with Osprey Ridge still open until 2010.

Sadly, golf was not on the agenda, as we were down at WDW for our sister publication, The Michigan Runner. We were with a group called The Running Network, which is comprised of 30 regional running publications in the U.S. and Canada. However, the groups also loves golf and have decided to have their summer meeting in Michigan at Boyne Highlands.

THE PGA OF AMERICA WELCOMES DAVID MOCINI TO ITS BOARD OF DIRECTORS
=================================================
Eight new members of The PGA of America's Board of Directors were sworn in Wednesday, Jan. 16, at The Association's 91st Annual Meeting at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.

Junior Bridgeman of Louisville, Ky., Ray Cutright of Macon, Ga., Rod Loesch of Easton, Conn., David Mocini of Harbor Springs, Mich., Derek Sprague of Malone, N.Y., Mike Thomas of Goshen, Ky., and Roger Wallace of Polston, Mont., will each serve three-year terms. Tour professional Brad Faxon of Barrington, R.I., a two-time Ryder Cup Team member, was appointed Player Director.

The PGA Board of Directors is composed of the Association's President, Vice President, Secretary, Honorary President and 17 Directors. The Directors include representatives from each of The PGA's 14 Districts, two Independent Directors and a member of the PGA Tour. New District Directors are elected by their local PGA Sections.

David Mocini, a PGA member since 1987, has been a general manager and PGA director of golf since 2004 at True North Golf Club in Harbor Springs, Mich. He is a 1977 graduate of Hillsdale (Mich.) College and is an original faculty member of the PGA Professional Golf Management Program and a three-time Section Horton Smith Award winner. Mocini, 52, served for more than 12 years on the Michigan PGA Board of Directors and was Growth of the Game Chairman. He is a past president of the Section, a member of the PGA Education Committee (2001-04); and served from 2004 to 2005 as a member of the President's Council.

Mocini will succeed Joe Flogge of Norton, Ohio, as District 5 Director for the Michigan, Northern Ohio and Southern Ohio PGA Sections.

CLOSURES OUTPACE OPENINGS IN 2007
===================================================
NGF has identified 113 golf courses, in 18-hole equivalents, that opened for business in the U.S. in 2007. During the same period, there were 121.5 golf course closures, resulting in a net negative of 8.5 courses. This year's story is much the same as 2006 when the number of closures outnumbered openings by 26.5.

"The development business has run full circle," says NGF vice president Greg Nathan. "Developers are now being more prudent about the decision to build, and are doing more due diligence on where to build, and at what price point."

Closures
Many courses close because of higher and better economic use of land, rather than business failure. Courses may be sold to developers when the underlying land has greater commercial real estate value than cash flow value as a golf course. In these cases, the land may have been unwittingly warehoused by the original owner, then sold by the owner's heirs as a favorable exit strategy.

A disproportionate number of closures were "non-traditional" facilities – either stand-alone 9-holers or short courses (executive or par-3). In 2007, they accounted for 43% of total closures but only 20% of total U.S. supply.

Five-year trend
Looking at the past five years combined, there have been 678.5 openings vs. 491.5 closures for a net positive of 187 courses, or a modest 37.4 per year. That equates to less than three-tenths of a percent of total supply being added per year. In other words, the overall number of golf courses is virtually unchanged from five years ago.

Looking Ahead
While it's too early to forecast 2008 openings, given the number of courses currently under construction, we expect the number of new courses built in 2008 to be similar to 2007.

DID YOU KNOW?
==============
History of Kent Country Club
Edward Lowe and J.C. Holt formed the original nine-hole Grand Rapids Golf Club in an open field at the corner of Wealthy Street and Plymouth Avenue in East Grand Rapids. The first golf club in West Michigan had modest beginnings, but as the game of golf steadily grew in popularity, so did the club's membership. Outgrowing its original site, the golf club moved to its current location at the turn of the 20th century where, over the years, a new golf course was created and renovated, a new clubhouse designed and built , and, eventually, state-of-the-art tennis, platform tennis and swimming facilities added.
Early Facts
• Kent was founded as a Golf Club in 1896
• Annual Dues were $5.00 for Men & $2.50 for Ladies
• Annual lease for 42 acres: $75
• Design fee for a 9-hole course: $25
• Groundskeeper fees: $12 per month
• Moved to present address in 1901
• Golf attire: shirt sleeves or sport coats & ties
• Bing Crosby and Chck Harbert played here in a fund-raising golf match in September 1942.
• Gerald R. Ford joined Kent Country Club in 1941, shortly after returning from Yale University law school.
