Jack Saylor of loud pants, Rube Goldberg swing and deft hands at a piano keyboard, left us after a year of poor health. He was one of the top golf quills in Michigan and left a legacy of intelligent writing behind him.
Michelle Wie Plays in Bay Mills Open Canadian Tour
The media tent at Bay Mills Open Canadian Tour was crowded and abuzz about the tournament appearance of Michelle Wie, the 13-year-old Hawaiian phenomenon.. While she did not make the cut, she made enough of an impression to give her many fans a glimpse f what should be a bright professional future.
Captains Courageous at Oakland Hills
Captains Langer and Sutton visited the revered Oakland Hills CC to promote the upcoming Ryder Cup. The eyes of the world will once more be focused on the Oakland Hills North and South courses that have been worked on by the likes of architects Donald Ross, Robert Trent Jones and Arthur Hills.
Michigan Architect Tom Doak on the Path to Becoming World Renown
Tom Doak, one of a number of superb Michigan based golf architects, has begun his foray into a body of work that will propel him into the stature of an internationally renowned golf architect. Fresh off his award winning work at Pacific Dunes, Tom now finds himself designing courses in New Zealand, Australia and Tasmania.
Tiger Defends at the Buick Open
Happiness was having Tiger as defending champion of your tournament. His appearance this year brought out the sponsors, the galleries and the media. While Tiger did not win here this year, he still won enough tournaments to become PGA Player of the Year. The Buick sponsorship has produced a feeling that Tiger has a little Michigan in him.
"The Big Break" Debuts at Treetops Resort
The Golf Channel's first reality show had a decidedly Michigan bent to it as Rich Smith and Treetops Resort provided the hosting and location of the program. Also, Anthony Sorentino, the unabashed golfer from Rochester Hills, finished second in the tournament but first in attitude.
Stacy Snider Wins the Tournament of Champions at Boyne
In the Year of the Woman Golfer, Stacy Snider put the Michigan exclamation point on it by becoming the first female to win the 54-hole, $100,000 Michigan PGA of Champions. Her payoff was a check for $17,250 and a legion of new admirers.
Michigan Amateur Returns to Belvedere CC
The Michigan Amateur returned to its roots this year. The Belvedere CC in Charlevoix, which had hosted the tournament on many occasions in the past, had a substantial make over in the past few years. This among other reasons brought Michiganâs most famous amateur event back to it storied roots.
Fox Hills Rakes in the Accolades
The year started out, by the Fox Hills folks being awarded the national course of the year by the NGCOA (National Golf Course Owners Association). It concluded by Kathy Dul Aznavorian, Sandy Dul Miley and their mother, grabbing a host of awards from the MGCOA. Architects Ray Hearn and Paul Albanese, also took their share of bows for the design of the award winning Strategic Fox.
Lights, Camera, Action-Michigan Golf on Television
Television cameras were all over Michigan this year. Network television carried The Buick Open, Farmers Charity Classic and the Ford Senior Players Championship. The Golf Channel stepped up to the tee, by telecasting The Bay Mills Open Canadian Tour and "The Big Break". ESPN was on hand to capture the action at the Tylenol Par Three Shootout..Finally, The Michigan Golfer televised, the 101st Western Amateur, The Bank of Ann Arbor Futures Classic, The Fifth Third Bank Michigan Women's Open. The Haig Tournament, Jeff Daniels Comedy Golf Jam, and the Bay Mills Open Canadian Tour to a worldwide audience on the Internet.

MGN ON THE ROAD-LENAWEE CC
We stopped by Lenawee CC and the team of Manager, Genene Bray; Head Professional, Steve Kusisto, Superintendent, Tim Baxter and Chris Phibbs had the place all gussied up for the holidays. Lenawee CC is approaching its 85th year, but a major renovation in the late 90's has set it up for a nice run toward its century of service.
We also had the opportunity to chat with Bob and Sally McHenry of McGolf, the people who supply most of the golf scorecards in Michigan. Bob and Sally are hanging it up after many years on the road. They are members of Lenawee CC and were involved with the creation of the 8th Anniversary Program.

EMU Sports Marketing Class & International Golf
Our cameras traveled to Eastern Michigan University as our host for the show, Vanessa Bell, visited EMU's Sports Marketing class. Her guest for the show, Dr. Sam Fullerton, is an expert on sports marketing, a scratch golfer, and the Interim Department Head of Marketing and Law at EMU. The topic for the day was "International Golf: Similarities and Differences". Our show covers golf in Germany, England, Scotland, New Zealand, Australia and the U.S.

JEFF DANIELS COMEDY GOLF JAM
Tis the season to be jolly. What better way to lighten up for this time of year, then to revisit this wild and wacky golf tournament. Designed to be a fund raiser for Purple Rose Theater in Chelsea, the Comedy Golf Jam is an absolute hoot.
MEDC FORMS NEW TOURISM AND MARKETING UNIT
Travel Michigan is joining forces with the business development marketing unit of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). The new Tourism and Marketing unit will be lead by George Zimmermann, Interim COO of the MEDC/Vice President of Travel Michigan and Dave Lorenz, the Managing Director of Travel Michigan. The new division will allow for greater synergy between the two areas and will provide additional opportunities for creative and promotional development.
The business development marketing area will be under the direction of Jennifer Owens. Dave Morris will lead all research and web team development for tourism and business marketing. Melinda Remer will continue to direct tourism marketing efforts and Ron Marabate will facilitate Welcome Center and Call Center duties.

DAN OLSEN GETS HIS CARD
After trying 11 times to qualify for a PGA Tour card, the 12th attempt was the charm for Michigan-native Dan Olsen. Olsen, 36, was the most unlikely of the 34 players to win playing privileges for 2004 on the professional golf circuit through the PGA Tour's grueling annual six-round Qualifying Tournament in December.
Olsen shot rounds of 74-68-66-69-67-77 on Orange County National's courses for a six-round total of 421, good enough for a 12th place finish in the qualifying event and a full exemption on the PGA Tour in 2004. GolfWeek promptly featured the emotional Olsen - with an emotional expression - on the cover of the magazine.
"I knew going into the final round that, barring any major collapse, I was going to make it. I was nervous. I knew I was hitting it well and just tried not to make any big mistakes coming in," he explained.
Olsen, who is married and has a four-year old daughter, was a 1985 graduate of East Lansing High School where he won the individual High School State Championship when he was a junior. While attending Indiana University, Olsen was "All Big Ten" in 1988 and won the Indiana State Amateur in 1986, 1988, and 1989.
Michigan golfers remember that Olsen fashioned one of the most exciting finishes in Michigan PGA tournament history. Trailing by two shots with three holes to play at the 1992 Boyne Tournament of Champions, Olsen finished birdie-ace-birdie to play the last three holes in four-under-par and win the tournament by two shots.

HIGH SPEED INTERNET GROWTH IN U.S.
Customers signed up for high-speed Internet access at a slower rate in the first six months of 2003 despite price cuts by some companies that supply the service. In its twice-yearly survey, the Federal Communications Commission found that broadband connections grew at a 18 percent clip from Jan. 1 to June 30. Growth fell >from a 23 percent rate in the second half of 2002 and 27 percent in the first six months of 2002. Overall, the number of homes and small businesses connected to the Internet via high-speed service topped out at 23.5 million. That was up from 19.9 million at the end of 2002 and almost double the total of 12.8 million at the end of 2001. There are more than 107 million households in the U.S., according to the Census Bureau. The cable industry controlled 13.7 million high-speed customers, or 58 percent of the nation's total. Phone companies held on to 7.7 million subscribers, or 32.7 percent. The market share of both industries was basically unchanged. Satellite!
and other services accounted for the rest. California had the most high-speed users, followed by New York, Florida and Texas. Not surprisingly, those are the four most populous states.

A guy falls asleep on the beach for several hours and gets a severe
sunburn. He goes to the hospital and is promptly admitted with second-degree
burns. He was already starting to blister and in agony. The doctor prescribed continuous intravenous feeding with saline and electrolytes, a sedative and a Viagra pill every four hours. PASSAGES
Andres Sone, Pub Links Golfer Magazine Publisher and co-founder passed away last week. Andres passed away unexpectedly on Monday, 12/15/03 in the Dominican Republic due to complications after surgery to remove an intestinal blockage. Andres was attending the International Association of Golf Tour Operators on the behalf of Pub Links Golfer Magazine. Andres 40, is survived by his wife Diane and daughters Alexis, age 10 and Brianna, age 6.
