MGN ON THE ROAD

Livonia
It is always nice to stop by the Michigan Section PGA office. This is one of the top if not the top sections in the country. On hand were Ken Devine, CEO; Lori Church, Administrative Assistant; Christy Baker, Bookkeeper; Kevin Helm, Director of Operations; Diane Lazaros, Membership Administrator and Tim Czelada Tournament Supervisor. They have one of those offices that you can read while you are waiting. They have some great photos of Walter Hagen and other Michigan golf greats. Nice place.

MICHIGAN GOLFER TV SHOW-HOTEL CONNECTIVITY

Last week, wireless hotel connectivity was a cover story in USA Today. In this edition of the Michigan Golfer Show, our guest host (We let Bill have some time off), Jennie McCafferty takes us on a tour of hotels in Michigan to check on their connectivity. Jennie visits with Bill Knopp of the Park Place Hotel in Traverse City; Barry Owens of Garland Resort in Lewiston; Rob Levitt of Eagle Crest Resort in Ypsilanti and Bob Barker of the Comfort Inn in Mt. Pleasant. While not everybody has wireless connectivity, they definitely have it in their plans. Http://michigangolfer.tv

BUICK OPEN DATES CORRECTED

Art
Hope you are having a Happy New Year.   I have noticed in your Michigan Golf e-mailed newsletters that the Buick Open dates are incorrect.  The Buick Open will be held July 28 - August 3, 2003.  Buick and the PGA moved the date back one week when they renewed the contract through 2006.    Keep up the good work.  I enjoy the newsletters. Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Rich Fairman, General Manager of Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club, for the update

TRAVEL MICHIGAN TAKE A BOW

The number of web surfers looking for Michigan travel information at http://michigan.org jumped dramatically in 2002. Inquiries in 2002 to the state’s official web site for tourism information rose 53 percent over web inquiries in 2001.  Nearly 2.25 million web user sessions were recorded in 2002, up from the nearly 1.5 million the previous year.  Some 62% of michigan.org web users were Michigan residents, while 38% inquired from out of state.

"We certainly view this as a positive indicator for leisure travel in Michigan," said George Zimmermann, vice president of Travel Michigan.  "We know from independent research that 65% of consumers who use michigan.org for tourism information then travel to and within Michigan."

Calendar Year    Web User Sessions    Increase
2002                    2,226,663      53%
2001                    1,455,202

Since Travel Michigan launched its first web site in December 1995, michigan.org has become an increasingly popular source for Michigan travel information online.  The current site saw its last major redesign in July 2002.  Improvements to michigan.org included advanced capabilities such as allowing visitors to search for Michigan tourism activities by interest or by location.  Web visitors also can sign up for a free monthly e-newsletter featuring Michigan destinations, events, attractions, deals and discounts.

Research completed since the redesign of the travel information on michigan.org shows positive results for the latest version of the site.

Consumers gave the new site particularly high marks for ease of navigation, ease of finding information and site organization.  In a separate survey of the tourism web sites of all 50 states, michigan.org ranked 6th in the nation.

Travel Michigan, a division of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, is the State of Michigan’s official agency for the promotion of tourism.  Travel Michigan markets the state’s tourism industry and provides valuable visitor information services.

COMPUTER HUMOR<

One of Microsoft's finest technicians was drafted and sent to boot camp. At the rifle range, he was given some instruction, a rifle, and bullets. He fired several shots at the target. The report came from the target area that all attempts had completely missed the target.

The technician looked at his rifle, and then at the target. He looked at the rifle again, and then at the target again. He put his finger over the end of the rifle barrel and squeezed the trigger with his other hand. The end of his finger was blown off, whereupon he yelled toward the target area, "It's leaving here just fine, the trouble must be at your end!"

TOM GILLIS GETTING HIS CARD A TOP STORY

Last week, we ran a list of stories we felt were some of the top ones in Michigan for 2002 Dave Richards, of Golf Marketing Services, felt that Tom Gillis getting his tour card was certainly one of top stories of 2002. Tom qualified by firing a 32 on the back nine of the PGA West Stadium Course.

Thanks for the input and a Tip of the Tam, Dave for passing this suggestion on.
