Michigan Golf Show with Jennie McCafferty and Laurie McCann
Last year, the Michigan Golf Show moved into their new digs and the golf world loved it. There was plenty of space to move around, the parking was less of a headache and there were bars in the exhibit area. Our host Jennie McCafferty, had the chance to chat with Laurie McCann about the success of last year's show and what to expect this year. CANADIAN GOLF SHOWS STILL ON GROWTH CURVE
Claudio Demarchi, the impresario of the Hamilton (Feb 2-4) and London Golf Shows (Feb 9-11) is bullish about the coming golf show season. "Our booth count in our new Hamilton show is up and the London Show, where we have added more space is also ahead of last year." There is a strong contingent of Michigan golf properties at the show each year.

BARTON HILLS TO HOST U.S. WOMEN'S MID-AMATEUR IN 2008
According to the Wednesday, Detroit Free Press, Barton Hills CC in Ann Arbor has been selected to host the Mid-Amateur from September 6 - 11, 2008. The club hosted the U.S. Women's Amateur in 1998.

AARP NEGOTIATES RULE CHANGES WITH USGA

Rule 1.a.5
A ball sliced or hooked into the rough shall be lifted and placedon the fairway at a point equal to the distance it carried or rolled intothe rough with no penalty. The senior should not be penalized for tall grasswhich grounds keepers failed to mow.

Rule 2.d.6 (b)
A ball hitting a tree shall be deemed not to have hit the tree.This is simply bad luck and luck has no place in a scientific game. The senior player must estimate the distance the ball would have traveled ifit had not hit the tree and play the ball from there.

Rule 3.b.3(g)
There shall be no such thing as a lost ball. The missing ball is onor near the course and will eventually be found and pocketed by someone else, making it a stolen ball. The player is not to compound the felony by charging himself or herself with a penalty.

Rule 4.c.7(h)
If a putt passes over a hole without dropping, it is deemed to havedropped. The law of gravity supersedes the Rules of Golf.

Rule 5.
Putts that stop close enough to the cup that they could be blownin, may be blown in. This does not apply to balls more than three inches from the hole. No one wants to make a travesty of the game.

Rule 6.a.9(k)
There is no penalty for so-called "out of bounds." If penny-pinching golf course owners bought sufficient land, this would not occur. The senior golfer deserves an apology, not a penalty.

Rule 7.g.15(z)
There is no penalty for a ball in a water hazard, as golf balls should float. Senior golfers should not be penalized for manufacturers' shortcomings.

Rule 8.k.9(s)
Advertisements claim that golf scores can be improved by purchasingnew golf equipment. Since this is financially impracticable for many seniorgolfers, one-half stroke per hole may be subtracted for using old equipment.

MICHIGAN PGA JUNIOR TOUR CONTINUES TO GROW
The Michigan Section PGA has launched the second season of the Michigan PGA Junior Tour sponsored by CarlÕs Golfland and Nike Golf. Boys and girls ages thirteen (13) to eighteen (18) will be able to compete at top quality facilities throughout the state of Michigan. Barton Hills Country Club, Battle Creek Country Club, Prestwick Village Golf Club and the Country Club of Lansing are just a few of the host facilities for the 2007 season.

Membership on the tour is $100 and the average cost per event is $50. The tour will consist of ten (10) single day events, two (2) two-day 36-hole events and a season ending 36-hole Tour Championship. A Player of the Year will be awarded in each age division for boys and girls. Age divisions will consist of boys and girls ages thirteen (13) to fifteen (15) and ages sixteen (16) to eighteen (18).

The boy and girl winners in the sixteen (16) to eighteen (18) division of the season ending Tour Championship will each earn an exemption into an American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) event. In addition, two college scholarships will be awarded, courtesy of Osprey Recreational Properties, to junior tour members meeting pre-determined criteria.

RODNEY GRANT TO HEADLINE NATIVE AMERICAN CUP III
Henry Boulley Jr., CEO of the Native American Cup, has landed another headliner for his Grand Traverse Resort based tournament. Rodney Grant, the Native American actor who played "Winds in his Hair: in the movie Dance with Wolves will be the special guest of honor. Past guests have included, Notay Begay NAC I and Cheryl Mitchell for NAC II.The dates for NAC III are August 3-4-5.

Boulley indicates that they will have three tribe's from New York, fivefrom Michigan and one each from Oklahoma, Arizona and Canada. It will be the strongest field to date.

MICHIGAN GOLF HALL OF FAME SENDS OUT 2007 BALLOT
The 2007 Michigan HOF ballot has been sent out with a due date of February. The list of 10 nominees will be cut in half with the awards being given at the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame golf outing on May 20.

This year's list includes, Bruce Fossum, Michael Kerr, John Lindholm, Steve Maddalena, John Morgan, Cliff Taylor, Jack Van Ess, Evan "Big Cat" Williams, Mark Wilson and Theodore "Ted" Woehrle.

WHAT EVER BECAME OF....BILL NEWCOMB?
Our first Michigan Runner Television Show in March, 2001, featured noted Michigan golf architect, Bill Newcomb. The show highlighted Bill's career in golf course design, touched on his invitation and play at The Masters and his latest design, Calderone Farms. Bill had had a pretty good run up until that time, but circumstances changed subsequently he seems to have dropped out of sight.

He mentored under Pete Dye, and was involved with Pete during the construction of Radrick Farms at Michigan and Crooked Stick in Indiana. He has a pretty good run and then a run in with Everett Kircher of Boyne. i remembered getting a note from Steve Kircher when we ran our first show, congratulating us on our move into Internet video and also indicating, we might have launched it with a different guest. The email was a little tongue in cheek, but those feelings only subsided with the passing of Everett..

The wheels began to come off when the golf rounds at Wishbone Glen did not meet with expectations and the financing was not robust enough to keep it solvent. Newcomb was involved financially in the project, actually being the one who put the deal together and he suffered a setback. The course was eventually sold to Osprey Management, who renamed it the Medalist.

Calderone Farms, which was the course he was promoting in our first video, suffered a setback when a monster storm hit the course and took out about three of the newly groomed holes. As I recall they had been seeded and had started the grown in process when the storm hit. It set back the opening almost a year. This also set back the timing of the clubhouse and again, the amount of play was less than expected. The last time I saw Bill was at the Michigan Women's Open, where the ladies were busy trying to master his course. I have heard that he left for Florida, but I am not positive.

MICHIGAN WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION BEGINS ITS 21ST YEAR
The Michigan WomenÕs Golf Association begins its twenty-first season of competitionwith a schedule of events designed to appeal to women competitive golfers of allabilities.Tournaments and events are held twice a month (May through October) at golf courses in the greater metropolitan Detroit area.

The season kicks off in April with the highly Ð popular Reality Rules Clinics, held at St. JohnÕs Golf Club in Plymouth on April 21. A variety of scramble, best Ð ball, and stroke play events begins on May 12 with the Annual Meeting and 4 Woman Spring Scramble, hosted by Dunham Hills Golf Club in Hartland. The MWGA Two Day State Championship (a stroke play event) is scheduled for July 28 and 29 at HunterÕs Ridge Golf Club in Howell. HunterÕs Ridge was voted the Number1 ÒFemale-Friendly Golf CourseÓ in the metro Detroit area in 2005.

Outside the metro Detroit area, a 2 Woman Scramble is planned for September 8 at Hawk Hollow Golf Club in Bath. The 2 Day, 2 Person Best Ball event takes place on September 23 and 24 at Lakeview Hills Resort in Lexington. The season concludes with the 4 Woman Fall Farewell Scramble on October 6 at Pine View Golf Club in Ypsilanti.

NOVEMBER ROUNDS INCREASE SLIGHTLY
Rounds played rose 1.1% in November 2006 vs. November 2005, the National Golf Foundation reported. This follows a 6.7% decline in October and a 2.3% decline in September.

Year-to-date rounds played held at a 0.3% increase for the first 11 months of 2006. Through June, year-to-date rounds played had been up 3%. The reporting is based on data from operators at more than 1,800 golf facilities.

For the full year 2005, rounds played were down 0.1%.

Year-to-date, regions experiencing the largest positive swings werethe Southeast (+3.9%), Central/South Florida (+3.9%) and Gulf Coast (+3.3%). The sharpest year-to-date declines were in the Lower Midwest (-1.3%) and the Southwest (-1.0%).

At all public courses, rounds played were up 0.1% for 2005; year-to-date 2006, up 0.3%. At private clubs, 2005 rounds played were down 1.0%; year-to-date 2006, up 0.5%.

Year-to-date, play at premium public courses (those with peak season weekend green fees with cart above $70) is down 0.4%. At value courses (those with peak season weekend green fees with cart below $40), rounds played rose 0.2%. At standard courses ($40-70), play was up 0.7%.

Golf Datatech reported that rounds played in November 2006 wereup 1.3% compared to November 2005 and the year to date is up0.4%. Thereportincludes 2,890 reporting courses.
