MGCOA HAS THE GOLF WORLD COVERED
Its not the cover of the Rolling Stone, but in the golf world, the cover of the newly revamped "Golf Business" is nothing to sweegie at. Dressed for success and providing most of the beauty on a killer cover are Carolyn Olson of Elmbrook GC and Toni Joers of Concord Hills GC Aso featured are Past MGCOA President Tom Schwark,JimJellema of Clearbrook GC and Bill Fountain of The Majestic at Lake Walden. "Golf Business" magazine is the voice of the NGCOA (National Golf Course Owners Association) and has been a comer in the golf magazine business.

Their lead article,"Back in Black" utilizes the Michigan golf owners group, as a barometer as to how the golf business is emerging from a mild depression. The author Peter Blias bases his pronouncements on a number of observations. For one, the amount of golf courses being built has dropped from 399 in 2000 to 120 in 2006. In additioin, golf course closings have increased from 32 in 2001 to 140 in 2006. Finally, golf rounds that had risen to 518 million in 2001 and had droppped to 495 million in 2003 have swung back to 502 million in 2006.
While the article is hopeful in its tone, it is does speak to a national picture and does not factor in the economic challenges that we have in Michigan. Still, it is a start to the road back.

MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION
Michigan Golf Show with Jennie McCafferty and Laurie McCann
Last year, the Michigan Golf Show moved into their new digs and the golf world loved it. There was plenty of space to move around, the parking was less of a headache and there were bars in the exhibit area. Our host Jennie McCafferty, had the chance to chat with Laurie McCann about the success of last year's show and what to expect this year. And to be sure, our video alos highlights many of the booths and their boothkateers. As the golf show season, begins, you can watch these shows to whet your appetite. It's like hitting a bucket of balls before the match begins. Enjoy http://michigangolfer.tv/2007shows/michigangolfshow/index.html
Marquette County Golf with Marc Gilmore, Frank Guastella, Mike Beckman and Peter Allen

This past fall, we had the opportunity to visit Marquette County and sample some of their golf inventory, namely, Greywalls and Chocolay Downs. Other courses that are included in their golf packages are Gentz's Homestead Golf Course, Red Fox Run and Wawonowin http://www.marquettecountry.org/recreation_golfing.php We also recommend the excellent Landmark Inn for lodging http://www.thelandmarkinn.com/
Our reporters for the show are Mike Beckman and Peter Allen and their guests are Marc Gilmore of the new Greywall GC and Frank Guastella of Red Fox Run. We also take the viewer for a little tour of Marquette, the Upper Peninsula's largest city.

MENTAL FLOSS
"Stewardesses" is the longest word typed with only the left hand and "lollipop" with your right.
No word in the English language rhymes with month, orange, silver, or purple.
"Dreamt" is the only English word that ends in the letters "mt".

Our eyes are always the same size from birth, but our nose and ears never stop growing. The sentence: "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" uses every letter of the alphabet.

The words 'racecar,' 'kayak' and 'level' are the same whether they are read left to right or right to left (palindromes). There are only four words in the English language which end in "dous" tremendous, horrendous, stupendous, and hazardous.

There are two words in the English language that have all five vowels in order: "abstemious" and "facetious."

TYPEWRITER is the longest word that can be made using the letters only on one row of the keyboard.

A cat has 32 muscles in each ear.

A goldfish has a memory span of three seconds.
A "jiffy" is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of a second.
A shark is the only fish that can blink with both eyes.

A snail can sleep for three years.

Almonds are a member of the peach family.

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain.

Babies are born without kneecaps They don't appear until the child reaches 2 to 6 years of age.
Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Jack Minzey for this memory upgrade.

BOOK REVIEW: "PLANE TRUTH FOR GOLFERS:MASTER CLASS"
Jim Hardy, who revolutionized golf instruction through his one plane and two plane swings, now has taken his message to the next level, the master player. His seminal book "PLANE TRUTH FOR GOLFERS" was such a success that the publishers deemed a more advance book was necessary.
Obviously, you can be the judge. The book will be out in stores later on this year or you can buy it online at
