MG ON THE ROAD
Acme-Mike DeAgostino, Director of Public Relations for the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, gave us a quick tour of their lobby make over. It will be spectacular, with its new counter design, fireplace, lobby bar complete with waterfall and windows that will open up the lobby to the outside. The tab thus far, is near two million dollars. In addition, the rooms in the hotel are getting the same treatment as those in the tower did a couple of years ago.

Bellaire-Shanty Creek Resort
Shanty Creek was picture postcard perfect as a heavy blanket of snow had made the area worthy of a Currier and Ives drawing. Appropriately enough, one of Michigan's finest photographers, Brian Walters, was on hand capturing the magic. Walters, on an assignment for Resort and Golf Marketing, was waiting for a little more sun for some outside shooting.

Boyne Falls-Grand Mountain Lodge & Spa
Michigan's Magical Mystery Tour could well lead off at the brand spanking new Grand Mountain Lodge & Spa. This facility is a visual feast, with Boyne Mountain's slopes lit up for night skiing, the Mountain village lit up with skiers waiting to head up the slopes again and the trees surrounding the resort heavy with snow and decked out with necklaces of light. Inside the magic continues, as you will find a killer lobby entrance, featuring Everett's, a watering hole that honors the great one himself, Everett Kircher. Finally, we peaked inside Avalanche Bay, Michigan's largest indoor water park, and heard the roar of water and the squeals of happy kids.

Grayling-Grayling Golf
We stopped by Grayling CVB to chat with Ilene Geiss-Wilson about their upcoming golf year. They feel their golf product is getting more recognition. She is hoping for a great year.

Harbor Springs-Boyne Highlands Resort
Boyne Highlands has become a great place to go for a pillow fight as they have had a major redo of the guest rooms. The room has new beds, blankets, televisions and consuls and is as comfortable as any we have been in throughout our Michigan travels. They have an endless coffee supply in each of the floor lobby areas and an abundance of newspapers, i.e., USA Today and Detroit Free Press at the front desk. We had a great meal at Slopes that had a plate presentation that was caught your eye and a taste that caught your palate. Finally, after our visit, they sent an online evaluation questionnaire to our email address. Very impressive.

The Heather, their masterpiece golf course that had the deft touch of Robert Trent Jones and Everett Kircher will be featured this year as the course of the Michigan Amateur. We chatted with both Bernie Friedrich's and Julie Ard of Boyne about the event and they promise that it will be very special. We also learned that Avalanche Bay and the new Grand Mountain Lodge & Spa have been over the top successful. The dazzling duo has substantially raised the bar for resort amenities in the Midwest.

Mancelona-Schuss Mountain
A much-needed new snow replenished Schuss Mountain trials and the cash flow of skiers were taking their runs. We stopped off to get some new skis from famed Michigan golfer and skier, Rodger Jabara. We picked up a new set of skis, boots and poles to decorate a ski body that has seen its better days, but hope spring eternal in a human's breast and I was ready to carve some new trails with my new parabolic skis. Jabara is the owner of Pro Sports Shoppe at Schuss Mountain. You can see a show we did with Rodger at http://michiganskier.tv

---
Thompsonville-Crystal Mountain Resort
The parking lot was jammed with hundreds of cars and the ski slopes were full of skiers as Crystal Mountain is harvesting some green from the white gold on their slopes. They continue to build additional lodging at their Waters Edge development. Brad Dean, Mr. Golf at Crystal, just celebrated his 40th birthday. They are ready to roll out another series of great golf schools.

Traverse City
We dropped by the Park Place Hotel to wrap up our vark (part vacation part work) before heading downstate. The Park Place is the headquarters for many golf courses in and around TC that do not have lodging. Amy Parker, the GM, indicated that they have wrapped up another solid year, their 75th, and look forward to another one in 2006. This weekend they featured their annual Chili Cook-off and hundreds of folks had the opportunity to taste chili from the kitchens of restaurants around the area. Hot chili and cold beer; is this a great country or what?

BOOK REVIEW: PLAY LIKE SERGIO GARCIA
This latest golf book from the Penguin Group publishers, comes from one of the real students of a golf swing, John Andrisani. A former editor of Golf Magazine, Andrisani, has penned four books on Tiger's swing and now, probably having milked all there was to Tiger, has cast his eye around and targeted Sergio as his next subject. While the author alludes to Sergio's somewhat unorthodox swing, he still thinks he can take the lessons he has gathered from Sergio and pass those on to the golfers of the world. The book sets up the instructional portion by recalling some of Sergio's great save or invented shots on way to winning his tournaments. The book has an intro by Jim McLean, hardly a stranger to great golf instruction, and Hank Haney offers some thoughts as well.

CHOCOLAY DOWNS GOLF COURSE SOLD
Joe Gibbs is now the former owner of the Chocolay Downs Golf Course near Marquette. The course and 770 acres has been sold to some developers from San Jose. Gibbs thinks that the new owners will be able to finish work on his 1007-yard par 6 golf hole on the new nine he has on the drawing board. Gibbs and his family have worked hard building the course and the real estate development on the course.

MGCOA GEARS UP FOR ANOTHER BIG YEAR
We just got the latest Tee-Off Times from the MGCOA and realized that Frank Guastella, is the new President for the year. We did a show with Frank highlighting the great golf you can find in the Upper Peninsula, his course Red Fox Run, being one of them. Frank succeeded Steve Ramey of Chisholm Hills and in turn will be succeeded by Vice President, Bill Fountain of the Majestic at Lake Walden. The newsletter highlighted the association's year and their latest product, the Michigan Golf League Championship.
