__/ MGN ON THE ROAD
MGN ON THE ROAD We thought we would kick off the new year on the road segment by visiting Shanty Creek. It has been a good friend for nearly three decades as we have covered its history of golf and skiing. We recall the excitement of Arnold Palmer opening up the famed Legend and Tom Weiskopt opening up Cedar River. We got our ski legs skiing Summit during a business conference some 20 years ago and a number of us finished the first of several White Pine Stampedes. We have covered their joyous Slush Cup in their winter wind down and have spent many a summer evening in their Summit restaurant watching the sun disappear over Lake Bellaire, while sipping on an adult beverage. Shanty Creek, like other resorts, has felt the challenge of uncertain times in the golf and ski business. And while it currently addresses some difficult financial issues, it is still business as usual for the staff of this great resort. With the blush of a new year, we felt this was a great place to start thinking about golf and the coming season. The golf at Shanty Creek is unparalleled. Cedar River, the first Tom Weiskopt course in Michigan, captured rave reviews and is the site of the annual Michigan PGA Championship. What can one say about The Legend that has not already been said. Perhaps the name and the fact that Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay designed it says it all. The Schuss Mountain Golf Club, starts and ends in spectacular fashion and probably does not get the ink it deserves. Finally, the Bill Diddel course , The Summit, represents the forward thinking that has been a hallmark of this resort, when it hired its first golf architect legend to design its course. Bill Diddel was a founding member of the ASGCA and also designed the Otsego Club's first course. We have enjoyed staying at Shanty Creek whether we were with 12 people in a chateau during the White Pine Stampede days, or curled up at one of their terrific rooms at The Lodge at Cedar River looking out at the slopes and watching night skiing. At Cedar River, the rooms are spacious, tastefully furnished and include fire places, microwaves, refrigerators and jacuzzis. Cedar River is serious lodging and you absolutely hate to check out. The Shanty Creek website http://shantycreek.com is chocked full of information on their golf, skiing, disc golf, running and hiking trails, tubeing areas, real estate, restaurants and calendar of events. In addition, it navigates extremely well and the entire content of this three in one resort is within a couple of key strokes. Put it on your list to visit this year.

Traverse City-Park Place Hotel In Barn Red, Borgnine plays Michael Bolini, an 80ish farmer who lives alone on his 257-acre fruit farm. In the movie, Bolini owes nearly $500,000 in inheritance taxes, doesn't have the money and developers are breathing down his neck. (More: http://www.leelanauews.com/editorial.php?id=283 The Park Place has been building a solid golf clientele over the years with its Sip and Chip program with local golf courses. *** Art Fern: Now back to our feature film! Woody Harrelson, Woody Allen, Woody Woodpecker, Woody Herman, Herman Munster, and Dumpo the Wonder Pigeon, in "Heidi Suffers an Estrogen Avalanche." He's so fat, he can be his own running mate. When turkeys mate they think of swans. Anytime four New Yorkers get into a cab together without arguing, a bank robbery has just taken place. For three days after death, hair and fingernails continue to grow but phone calls taper off. Happiness is your dentist telling you it won't hurt and then having him catch his hand in the drill. I know a man who gave up smoking, drinking, sex, and rich food. He was healthy right up to the day he killed himself. If life was fair, Elvis would be alive and all the impersonators would be dead. New York is an exciting town where something is happening all the time, most unsolved. In matrimony, to hesitate is sometimes to be saved. If variety is the spice of life, marriage is the big can of leftover Spam. Blow in it's ear. --Johnny Carson on the best way to thaw a frozen turkey If it weren't for Philo T. Farnsworth, inventor of television, we'd still be eating frozen radio dinners. Nancy Reagan fell down and broke her hair. Quotes from Johhny Carson

"We are excited to have an individual with the experience of Doug join the Garland team," Owens said. *** -- Bellaire - Short's Brewing Company opened nine months ago. We couldn't have had a better lunch of blue-cheese chili and their winter ale. My husband raved about the chicken wings and the pilsner. Live bands play Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and walls serve as an art gallery. -- Traverse City - Minerva's at the Park Place Hotel. We continued our chili theme during the 11th annual Chili Cook Off at the Park Place Hotel. Folks try eight different chili's and vote for their favorites. Minerva's white chicken chili has won more times than any other. Nothing beats good chili on a cold winter day.
