MGN ON THE ROAD
Bellaire-Shanty Creek Resort
"Good morning, it's a lovely day at Shanty Creek." And so it was on a day that started off at 17 degrees below zero. While it was a day when a golf ball could explode because of the temperature, it was great for skiers, who knew that the slopes would be full of tons on freshly made snow.

We thought we would kick off the new year on the road segment by visiting Shanty Creek. It has been a good friend for nearly three decades as we have covered its history of golf and skiing. We recall the excitement of Arnold Palmer opening up the famed Legend and Tom Weiskopt opening up Cedar River. We got our ski legs skiing Summit during a business conference some 20 years ago and a number of us finished the first of several White Pine Stampedes. We have covered their joyous Slush Cup in their winter wind down and have spent many a summer evening in their Summit restaurant watching the sun disappear over Lake Bellaire, while sipping on an adult beverage.

Shanty Creek, like other resorts, has felt the challenge of uncertain times in the golf and ski business. And while it currently addresses some difficult financial issues, it is still business as usual for the staff of this great resort.

With the blush of a new year, we felt this was a great place to start thinking about golf and the coming season. The golf at Shanty Creek is unparalleled. Cedar River, the first Tom Weiskopt course in Michigan, captured rave reviews and is the site of the annual Michigan PGA Championship. What can one say about The Legend that has not already been said. Perhaps the name and the fact that Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay designed it says it all. The Schuss Mountain Golf Club, starts and ends in spectacular fashion and probably does not get the ink it deserves. Finally, the Bill Diddel course , The Summit, represents the forward thinking that has been a hallmark of this resort, when it hired its first golf architect legend to design its course. Bill Diddel was a founding member of the ASGCA and also designed the Otsego Club's first course.

We have enjoyed staying at Shanty Creek whether we were with 12 people in a chateau during the White Pine Stampede days, or curled up at one of their terrific rooms at The Lodge at Cedar River looking out at the slopes and watching night skiing. At Cedar River, the rooms are spacious, tastefully furnished and include fire places, microwaves, refrigerators and jacuzzis. Cedar River is serious lodging and you absolutely hate to check out.

The Shanty Creek website http://shantycreek.com is chocked full of information on their golf, skiing, disc golf, running and hiking trails, tubeing areas, real estate, restaurants and calendar of events. In addition, it navigates extremely well and the entire content of this three in one resort is within a couple of key strokes.

Put it on your list to visit this year.

Traverse City-Park Place Hotel
Bill Knopp, Director of Marketing at Park Place Hotel, is working with media consultant, Sue Olson to plan for the properties upcoming 75th anniversary. The hotel is coming off a solid year and will be dropping a million bucks to upgrade its rooms as it gets all gussied up for its birthday to be celebrated on Memorial Day weekend. The Park Place Hotel has seen its share of star power over the years, primarily through its former Cherry Country Playhouse and the work of Pat Paulson. Staying at the Park Place this week was Ernest Borgnine, who is the area finishing up the picture, "Barn Red", he is doing with local producer, Richard Brauer.

In Barn Red, Borgnine plays Michael Bolini, an 80ish farmer who lives alone on his 257-acre fruit farm. In the movie, Bolini owes nearly $500,000 in inheritance taxes, doesn't have the money and developers are breathing down his neck.

The Park Place has been building a solid golf clientele over the years with its Sip and Chip program with local golf courses. For a "virtual tour" of the Park Place and some of its marketing partners, go to http://michigantravel.tv/2003famtrip/

Art Fern: How do you get there? Let me tell you friends, how do you get there! You take the San Diego Freeway to the Ventura Freeway. GOOD FOOD WE'VE FOUND ON THE ROAD THIS WINTER
-- Cadillac - Hermann's on the main drag (Mitchell Street) is a three-star restaurant which has a deli, cafe, bar and hotel. We stopped for mid-afternoon coffee and cranberry scone and drooled over other pastries made by the certified Austrian pastry chef.

-- Bellaire - Short's Brewing Company opened nine months ago. We couldn't have had a better lunch of blue-cheese chili and their winter ale. My husband raved about the chicken wings and the pilsner. Live bands play Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and walls serve as an art gallery.

-- Traverse City - Minerva's at the Park Place Hotel. We continued our chili theme during the 11th annual Chili Cook Off at the Park Place Hotel. Folks try eight different chili's and vote for their favorites. Minerva's white chicken chili has won more times than any other. Nothing beats good chili on a cold winter day.

JEANNIE THOREN BRINGS WOMEN'S CLINIC TO CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN
This weekend, nationally recognized women's equipment expert, Jeannie Thoren, returns to Crystal Mountain for the ninth consecutive year. Early in her skiing career, Jeannie encountered many of the same difficulties other women experience, such as wandering ski tips, sliding tails, inconsistent edging and feeling out of control. Thus, since the late 1970's, Jeannie has made it her mission to influence women's specific ski equipment in order to improve women's skiing. Take from me, since I attended the Thoren Clinic my skiing has dramatically improved. She will have you skiing more efficiently and with more confidence from the first day. We did a show with Jeannie and Jim Neff a couple of years ago, so it you can not make it check out at

19TH HOLE- CADDY SMACK
Golfer: "Think I'm going to drown myself in the lake."
Caddy: "Think you can keep your head down that long?"

Golfer: "Do you think my game is improving?"
Caddy: "Yes sir, you miss the ball much closer now."

Golfer: "Do you think I can get there with a 5 iron?"
Caddy: "Eventually."

Golfer: "You've got to be the worst caddy in the world."
Caddy: "I don't think so sir. That would be too much of a coincidence."

Golfer: "Please stop checking your watch, It's too much of a distraction."
Caddy: "It's not a watch - it's a compass."

Golfer: "This is the worst course I've ever played on."
Caddy: "This isn't the golf course. We left that an hour ago."

Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Jim Neff for this backspin.
