JUNIOR PROGRAM AT GULL LAKE GC AND MGCOA'S KATE MOORE WIN NGCOA AWARDS
=============================================================================
The junior golf program at Gull Lake View Golf Club & Resort in southwest Michigan is not a major revenue source for the family-owned facility. But that doesn't seem to bother anyone at the resort that's long been a favorite among golfers in the Midwest, Great Lakes and Canada.

"It's probably a break even for us," Ashleigh Kosin http://youtube.com/watch?v=fCgkcigRuw0 , Gull Lake View's director of marketing, said of the five-year-old program that targets juniors 7 to 13. "But it's the long-term investment in golf that we're going after."

The Gull Lake View junior program, which won the National Golf Course Owners Association's 2008 Player Development Award, includes three weeks of instruction (two hours per week) led by Bill Johnson, head professional at the resort's Stonehedge course. The program ends with a tournament that gives many of the young players their first taste of competition.

Kate Moore, executive director of the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association, won the NGCOA's Champion Award, which recognizes a member whose work has benefited fellow owners and operators. Moore led a lobbying effort that successfully thwarted the state's plans to levy a six percent sales tax on Michigan courses. "We argued that golf is Michigan's No. 1 form of leisure and tourism business and brought in millions of dollars in revenue to the state. We felt it wasn't fair to tax golf courses on top of the taxes they were already paying," Moore said.

Otsego Club-Renovation of the Hilltop Lodge
The latest and greatest Otsego Club renovation project has been completed and it is a knock out. GM Kris Klay gave us a tour of the new Hilltop Lodge, which features eight connecting suites and state-of-the-art amenities. Suite amenities include in-room refrigerators, microwaves and LCD TV's. The room where I am composing this newsletter, while awaiting yet another big snow, is the central meeting room. This room can be combined with the lodging arrangements to create the perfect atmosphere for a business retreat or family reunion. It has great connectivity here, so no need to go to the main lodge for an online connection.

But wait this is the age of You Tube, so let's take our tour now... http://youtube.com/watch?v=Iv7ysMQZGwg

And remember, you can get all the golf and ski videos of the Otsego Club at their Television Network

P.S. Liquid Louie, the Logmark's famous bartender, continues to improve after some bypass surgery. We'll drink to that. Cheers.

Treetops-Fabulous Fifties
What a day. This the second annual "Fabulous Fifties" event at Treetops. The "Fabulous Fifties", much like this month's upcoming "Amazing Race at Treetops" was designed to get the Gaylord community involved with the Treetops family. GM Mike Hernandes, Director of Skiing and Director of Golf, Kevin McKinley, Marketing Director Tish Jankowski and a solid team of Treetops staffers have taken these new events and created some great some fun and exciting times for the community and also raised some nice money for various charities.

The Fabulous Fifties had local business personnel dressing up with poodle skirts, saddle oxfords and big black belts, with the guys putting together the "Elvis" look with rolled up cuffs and tee shirts with a pack of cigarettes rolled up in them. Eleven businesses competed for some terrific prizes. Our cameras were able to visit four of the locations, The Gaylord Area Tourist Bureau, Fifth Third Bank, Goodwill Tools for Teaching and Saturn Booksellers.

Treetops, originally known as Sylvan Knob, opened in 1954. In the spirit of that time and era, the resort had $3 lift and tubing tickets, burger baskets for $1.50 (I had one and it was great) and milk shakes also for a buck fifty. They had a great many contests throughout the resort, with it all finishing up at the Legends, where they had a "Name that Tune" segment and a final sock hop. All day long the exploits were followed by the Eagle radio station. It was a lot of fun, but why take our word for it, click on to the show we just put up on You Tube http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZTqj5_W3pPE

Also, you can view other Treetops shows, such as the Amateur Par 3 Shootout, or the Pepsi Fall Charity Invitational on the Treetops Television Network.

GOLF CHANNEL'S DR. GREG ROSE TO HEADLINE 20TH WEST MICHIGAN GOLF SHOW
=========================================================================
(Grand Rapids, Mich.) As co-host of the popular Golf Fitness Academy series seen on the Golf Channel, Dr. Greg Rose has worked with the top players in the world, including Masters defending champion Zach Johnson. Dr. Rose will join a long list of nationally known and respected teachers as he headlines the 20th West Michigan Golf Show, Feb. 22-24, at the DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids. Co-founder of the California-based Titleist Performance Institute -- one of golf's premier swing, conditioning and custom club-fitting facilities – Rose is anxious to visit Grand Rapids even in the dead of winter.

"Looking at names of the Show's previous presenters and their credentials over the past twenty years, I'm indeed honored to share my expertise and experience at the West Michigan Golf Show," said Rose who is a board certified Doctor of Chiropractic and has a degree in Engineering from the University of Maryland. "Everyone agrees that health and fitness are important for golfers but many people want to know what exact steps and programs they should undertake. For years, I've worked with the top Tour players and their trainers to devise golf-specific exercises and programs and I'll be sharing that information in Grand Rapids," said Rose. "And with it being in Michigan in February, I'll even touch upon what golfers can learn from snow sports from a fitness standpoint."

Show Manager Carolyn Alt is thrilled the Golf Show is hosting Rose. "As someone hooked on the Golf Channel, I've watched Dr. Rose on his series and have been highly impressed with his knowledge and presentation skills. West Michigan golfers will again have the chance to learn from one of the top experts in the field," said Alt. In the past twenty years, the West Michigan Golf Show has gained national recognition for the caliber of its teachers and presenters including such notables as Jim Flick http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/flick/ , Hank Haney, Dave Pelz, Bart Lower http://michigangolfer.tv/2006shows/lower/ Brad Dean http://michigangolfer.tv/2006shows/crystalmountain/ Rick Smith, Sandra Palmer, Todd Anderson, and Dr. Gary Wiren http://youtube.com/watch?v=t1iJMQ4T6C8 . Note: For a complete listing of teachers for the first twenty years visit http://www.showspan.com/WMG/NewsReleases.aspx

Joining Rose on the seminar stage will be two of Michigan's best teachers, Charlie Vandenberg and Patti Butcher. The 2007 Michigan PGA's Teacher of the Year, Vanderberg is a Master Professional and directs the Thousand Oaks Golf Academy in Grand Rapids. Butcher is the head golf professional at Blythefield CC and is a five-time Golf for Women Top 50 teacher.

Tickets are $9 for adults, $4 for children ages 6-14, and children 5 and under are free. A free sleeve of Srixon golf balls will be given to the first 100 people each day or with an online ticket purchase. Sponsors include Srixon, Golf Association of Michigan, Odawa Casino Resort, and the Michigan Section PGA. Tickets will be available at the door as well as online at http://www.westmichigangolfshow.com. For more information, call 1-800-328-6550 or visit the website.

REMOTE OBSERVATIONS-By Terry Moore
===================================
It was another tough finish for Mt. Pleasant native Doug LaBelle II, who now lives in Phoenix, as he went 75-75 on the weekend at the FBR Open event in Scottsdale and ending up tied for 58th place. On Friday, LaBelle garnered some nice television attention and comments as he fired a seven-under par 64 and was atop the leader board. Going into the third round he was tied for the lead at nine under par 133. But again LaBelle faltered on the weekend.

LaBelle was interviewed after the final round by the Arizona Republic and was quoted as saying, ""I made to the weekend but didn't do so well after that," he said."I didn't hit it very good on Saturday and I putted poorly. I chipped it poorly and my approach shots were very poor. Today I actually hit it better than I did the first two days, but I lipped out six or seven times today. It's just one of those things." Incidentally, LaBelle made into the FBR by qualifying on Monday as did at the Sony Open in Hawaii where he finished tied for 10th.

After noting a string of so-so finishes late last season when he failed to keep his card and his back to back stumbles these past two weeks, some observers have wondered if LaBelle needs to retain a sports psychologist as he wrestles with the pressure of being in contention on the weekend. Then again, qualifying on Mondays is no small feat of maintaining composure.

The FBR Open reported an eye-popping attendance record of 538,356 fans for the week with 170,802 attending on Saturday alone. I'm always curious about how these figures are calculated knowing how some tourney officials like to hype attendance numbers. "The more the merrier" is a sports marketing adage for selling tickets and sponsorships and therefore one should be skeptical about these attendance reports.

On the local newspaper's website, one tournament patron posted this comment: "I was there on Saturday and quite frankly, I don't think this thing adds up. 20,000 is THE top estimate for attendance at 16. Let's say another 30,000 on 18. That means 120,000 were spread over the other 16 holes. I can say for certain there are 6 holes that have crowds in the low hundreds at best. It's a great tournament and a great time, but let's get real with the numbers!!"

If I were a local reporter I would check to see if there are turnstiles at the tournament entrances that would more accurately gauge or estimate attendance figures as done at stadiums and arenas. If not, then these figures may well be "cooked" for publicity and marketing purposes. (In contrast, the Masters hasn't ever reported attendance numbers.)
To its credit, the FBR Open's organizing body--the Thunderbirds—will raise nearly $8 million for local charities. Those numbers are genuine.

GOLF IS BIG BUSINESS
By Chaley Stine-Founder of Golfweek
==============================
Golf in the United States is an annual $76 billion industry. And it's total impact on the U.S. economy is $175 billion! That was the highlight of the first of a series of ongoing "Golf Economy Reports" introduced at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, and ordered by the World Golf Foundation and.its associated organizations. Done by a professional research team, Stanford Research International, it will be followed by a series of state-by-state reports, broken down into all categories of income.

Although it has been under the radar of most golfers, the World Golf Foundation has existed since 1994. Led by the PGA Tour, the first WGF act was the 1998 opening of the World Golf Hall of Fame at St. Augustine, Fl. Other member organizations include the USGA, PGA of America, Royal and Ancient, European Tour, Golf Course Superintendents Assn., of America, and Augusta National Golf Club..

The Foundation is the sponsor of Golf 20/20, an annual conference of the golf industry for promotional development. Its slogan of 20/20, Eye for the Future. promotional development. Golf 20/20 is the catalyst for a number of golf programs, the most prominent of which are the First Tee and National School programs, now in place throughout the country.

Introduction of the Golf Economy Forum was made by PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem, executive director David Fay of the USGA, and CEOs Joe Steranka of the PGA and Steve Mona of the Golf Course Superintendents Ass'n. Mona will leave the GCSAA in March to become the first full-time CEO of the World Golf Foundation. New headquarters offices will be located at the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Fay, who, by a rotating basis, is 2008 chairman of WGF, explained that in 2002 Golf 20/20 hired the economic research company SRI International to resarch the scope of the U.S. golf economy. That initial project,, based on 2000 information, showed golf in the U.S. to be a $62 billion industry. "Five years later," Fay said, "we went to SRI to do a study using 2005 data. The result showed golf to be a $76 billion industry, bigger than the newspaper industry and bigger than the motion picture and video industries combined. By standard multipliers used by the federal government, the $76 billion golf economy triggered a total economic impact on the U.S. economy of $195 billion. And within that number, the golf industry is responsible for approximately two million jobs, with wage income totalling $61 million."

"It is important," Fay said, "that everyone in the industry and everyone who plays golf is made aware of these statistics. It is equally important, maybe more so, that the economic impact of golf is known to those 270 million Americans who don't play. They are the people who are in position to affect golf's future well being."

In progress now is an individual state-by-state survey of the details, including some additional categories such as land and water usage. "The state level is where we actually put this data to work," said Steranka, who followed Fay. "We must collect data from state golf associations, PGA Sections, the club managers association,, the golf course superintendents, course owners -- all are groups which are part of the economic impact.data.

"To do something which has credibility and respect, you need a consistent template, That was where Dr. Peter Ryan and SRI came in. Golf 20/20, working with Peter, has developed a template that can be replicated in all 50 states. That's now in progress.

"Virginia was the state chosen for the pilot program. Close to Washington, D.C., it is a diverse state in types of golf facilities -- a resort community, a private club community, and a daily fee community. The study found that $3.1 billion flows through Virginia's economy because of the golf industry, including 40,000 jobs with wages of almost a billion dollars, about 1/60th of the total $61 billion nationally that was cited.

"We are also looking at the impact of the game on our environment. In Virginia we took water usage as a specific point to focus on. We found golf courses represent 2.2 percent of the turfgrass in the state. Most importantly only four-tenths of one percent of all the water used in the state to irrigate turf, was used by golf. That's showing golf as an efficient user of natural resources."

Steranka said that studies are in progress in Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and California. Each state has some different issues and environmental laws which will be considered. When completed, the PGA Sections of each state will announce the results.

"In the past we spoke individually about our respective contributions, and I hope you're beginning to see that there is great power and benefit for the industry when we speak with one voice. Steve Mona comes with a great perspective on the environment by having been head of the Golf Course Superintendent's Association. Mona then told the assembled golf industry people that the GCSAA has a multi-year project of quantifying what's happening on courses from an environmental perspective. We are talking about 16,000 golf courses in the United States, and that the average golf course consists of 150 acres. Only 100 acres of the course is maintained turfgrass. The rest is buildings, golf paths, waterways, lakes etc. So two-thirds are maintained turf and only three acres of that hundred are maintained at tee height, and another 100 at green height. What we can show now is that what is intensely maintained is only a small portion of golf course property.

"Over the next four years there will be surveys of how much water is really going on the golf course and what the quality of the water is. There will be a survey on nutrients, and a survey on pesticides, what kind of pesticide use occurs on a golf course etc.. Finally in 2010 there will be a survey on environmental data -- what's the golf course superintendent doing to advance the environment. When I am full-time on the World Golf Foundation, I think we have a great story to tell. We have a three-legged stool. Environmental impact, economic impact, and human impact make up the three components. Golf generates $3,5 billion a year for charities. About $130 million comes from the various tours and the other professional organizations. That leaves about $3,337 billion that's generated by those 16,000 golf courses in other fund-raisers."

PALM CITY, Fla. – Kyle Dobbs of Ann Arbor, Mich., birdied the last three holes Monday to pull out his third Minor League Golf Tour victory. Dobbs edged Justin Hicks of Royal Palm Beach 65 to 66 on the Crane Creek course at Martin Downs Country Club.

Dobbs also made three consecutive birdies starting at the fourth hole and had birdies at the first and 10th holes, making his only bogey at the second. Hicks had seven birdies, including three straight starting at No. 11, but bogeyed the par-3 16th hole, which proved to be decisive. It was Dobbs' second MLGT victory this year, the first coming on Jan. 10. He earned $1,000 from the $8,735 purse.

The MLGT's 13th tournament of the year drew 71 starters.
