Word has it that the Par-3 Shootout will resume and be held in California this year, with a hopeful return to Treetops in 2009. Make no mistake about it, this is an important tournament for Michigan as it fuels the Gaylord Golf Mecca and reminds people of the quality of our golf. Last year, during our videotaping of the Treetops Amateur Par 3 Shootout, we met a number of people who were there just to golf Threetops, the course they had seen on television for so many years. Also, the annual par 3 tournament at the Masters will be telecast for the first time this year by ESPN.

Again, for those that missed it last week, we have video of Judy Mason's Ladies Golf School at Treetops. We had a fun time creating the show and the enthusiasm of the women golfers helped set the tone.

NEW SHOWS; AN OVERVIEW OF THE WMGS AND WHAT'S NEW AT THE WMGS

The WMGS opened under spectacular skies and a gigabyte or two of optimism. The WMGS has seen the excitement and energy of the late 80's, the go go economy of the 90's and now the cautious and guarded start of this new century. Perhaps, golfers have had enough of this caution as they packed Devos Place for three days, setting an attendance mark along the way. Carolyn Alt, show director, indicated that 50 new exhibitors help contribute to the over the top numbers of 12,000+.

The weather was certainly a factor as well. Terry Moore, show creator 20 years ago and now consultant, recalled that the first golf show was set up for golfers and a hockey game broke out. He was alluding to a nasty ice storm that hit on the eve of the first show. Moore said dry streets and reasonable temperatures have generally pointed to a successful show.

Mike Husby, indicated that Candlestone Golf & Resort, will be auctioned off on April 24th. Husby has been the GM of Candlestone on two occasions, the latter being the last three years. Candlestone, a W. Bruce Matthews design, has struggled for years and the current heirs want out. It has a fine golf course that needs to be brought up to date and a hotel which could use a serious upgrade as well. "The Hus" would like to stay on to remodel the course. Husby has designed, Wild Bluff, Marsh Ridge, The Loon and two nines in the U.P.

Marty Figg, wants folks to know, that not all tournaments are leaving Michigan. This summer Riverwood will host the 38th Annual Riverwood State Junior Tournament. It will take place on July 9 &10 and is open to any junior golfer through age 18. Four former champions are now or have played on a professional golf tour; Dan Pohl on the PGA, and Cindy Figg-Currier, Becky Iverson and Kelly Robbins on the LPGA. John Morse of the PGA tour also played there in the 70s as did Doug LaBelle who’s now on the PGA.

MSU Golf has hired former Big Break star and EMU alum, Bart Lower to be a part of its golf school. MSU is celebrating 50 years of golf on its Forest Akers course. The course was designed, by Michigan golf architect pioneer, W. Bruce Matthews.

Lower, was on two Big Break shows, and leveraged those appearances into a real estate job with Pulte Homes in Florida. Unfortunately, the housing market dried up, thus forcing Lower's return to Michigan. He does own a driving range in Ionia, where he now lives. Lower will be working with Ken Horvath, General Manager of MSU Golf and Steve Ruthenbury, Director of Golf Instruction.

Rick Robbins will return to the Otsego Club to revisit one of his and Gary Koch's greatest creations, The Tribute http://michigangolfer.tv/2007shows/tribute/ , sometime this summer. Jeff Parker, President of the Bay Mills Indian Community, the tribe that owns the Bay Mills Casino and Wild Bluff GC, was down from Brimley, working their booth. Parker was the shaker and mover getting the course done and also was behind their hosting of the Bay Mills Open of the Canadian Tour. Parker is now heavily involved in launching a new casino in Port Huron. Rob Lussenhof is the golf professional at Wild Bluff and Larry Buchholtz is the superintendent.

Scott Hebert, last played in the 2008 PGA Professional National Championship at the Reynolds Plantation in Georgia. He finished in a tie for 13th. Hebert, now in his second year as the head professional at GTR&S is excited about the new casino that is opening this summer at Turtle Creek. The 80+ million dollar hotel and convention center will add an even bigger draw to the area as well as a ton of tee times.

Bob Lober, Executive Director of the Traverse City Junior Golf Association indicated that they will celebrate their 25th anniversary this year. Matt Wooten, Head Superintendent of The Chief and Hawk's Eye golf courses in Bellaire, indicates that they are still delaying the opening of their executive course. Obviously, they are being cautious during these slow real estate time. The Tom Izzo Celebrity Challenge has been discontinued as well as their relationship with Izzo. Again, a soft economy is the the culprit. Grant Rowe, owner developer, has moved back into the forefront as his son Dave, ha s decided to leave the company and set up his law practice in Traverse City.

We chatted with Jon Stultz, of Shanty Creek, about their ongoing renovations at the Summit Lobby and Hotel. We had stopped by on our way to the golf show, and were pleasantly surprised at how well the lobby had turned out. They eliminated the second floor office complex in the lobby which gave the area an astounding richness of views and room. Very nice. The room renovating is continuing.

Walt Holden, Co-Owner of The Briar at Mesick, indicated that they have bought the Wedgewood course and will rename it The Briar South Caddilac to go with their new name of The Briar North Mesick. They are putting together package and 36 hole fees on their website and should have them up this month.

Larry Bowden, owner of The Natural in Gaylord, is currently in negotiations for purchasing Marsh Ridge. Bowden has been in the golf and real estate business for the good part of 25 years in the Gaylord area. He has some ownership of the resort now, having purchased a number of lodging properties on the grounds which he has converted to condos.

Ashleigh Kosin, Gull Lake View’s director of marketing, is resting up from their harvest of awards this past year. Their Gull Lake View junior program, which won the National Golf Course Owners Association’s 2008 Player Development Award, includes three weeks of instruction (two hours per week) led by Bill Johnson, head professional at the resort’s Stonehedge course.

Dennis Mitchell, a member of Pointe O'Woods and a person heavily involved with the Western Amateur, was in the hunt for the $25,000 par-3 hole in one contest they had at the show. He got his shot within the circle and came back Sunday. Alas, the person that had the opportunity of the 25K, missed his shot badly off the tee. Mitchell is lamenting the fact that as of this writing, Pointe O'Woods will be hosting the Western Am this summer and then another time in the span of the next five years. It has been a great tournament for Michigan. It is moving to a course near Chicago for 2009.

2008 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP APPROACHING SELL OUT IN CORPORATE HOSPITALITY

PGA Championship officials recently announced they are approaching a sell out in corporate hospitality with ninety percent of its inventory sold to date. The 2008 PGA Championship will be held at Oakland Hills Country Club on the famed South Course, August 4–10, 2008.

A limited number of packages are still available in the form of Private “Chalets” in the Corporate Village and individual “Tables” in the Champions Club. Packages range in size from 10 to 100 guests and range in price from $37,500 to $195,000. REMOTE OBSERVATIONS

Thanks to the magic of TiVo, I was able to watch much of the Accenture Match Play championship held in Tucson. Short of the majors, this is my favorite tournament of the year to watch. It’s comparable to the Ryder Cup in that every match has equal value and merit. Of course, that’s due to the match play format itself, one of the sadly neglected formats on the pro circuit. Even on a delayed basis and often knowing the matches’ outcome, the viewing was still compelling. NBC and tournament sponsors were saved from a likely huge loss of viewership when Tiger Woods on Wednesday came back from a late three hole deficit to beat JB Holmes on the 18th hole. Holmes played well but he became a mere footnote to another phenomenal stretch of closing holes by Tiger.

Tiger’s game is “in full flight,” to borrow Crenshaw’s oft-quoted phrase. There may be an occasional loose drive or iron shot--especially when Tiger seems to lose his posture by dropping his head--but all in all his game is bullet-proof and his putting is ethereal. Does he ever miss a short putt when it counts?

Also, in a little episode in his semi-finals match against Henrik Stenson, Tiger also revealed how cagey he is and how his aura often makes his opponents make bad decisions. It was the 15th hole with Tiger one-up in the match and where Stenson drove into the wash and had to pitch sideways back to the fairway where Tiger’s drive lay. Stenson then hit his iron to less than three feet from the flag, sitting there for a likely par. Meanwhile, Tiger hit the green but had a long birdie putt. Tiger’s birdie putt then skids four feet past the hole. Tiger now is away and is faced with the situation where he could actually lose the hole to Stenson. So he says to Stenson, “good-good?” Either without thinking or maybe fearful of rattling Tiger’s cage, Stenson accepts. This was a dumb move especially in match play when a player is one-down with only three holes to play. Sure, Tiger is rock-solid on short putts but it wasn’t a gimme and putts do lip out. If I were Stenson, I would have said, “You know, Tiger, thanks for asking but maybe this late in the match we ought to hole them out.” Besides, Stenson is a Swede and could claim translation problems. But being one-down, he shouldn’t have accepted Tiger’s “kind offer.” The days of Swedish neutrality are over.

It was also refreshing to see and to hear Johnny Miller back in the TV booth with his acute analysis and commentary. The king of desert golf, Miller never fails to do his homework on players and the course itself. Yet, the ever opinionated Miller does have a tendency toward self-congratulation. For example, he recalled on-air when Tiger was winning his streak of USGA titles and on NBC, he predicted the teenaged Tiger would “win 50 tournaments and 10 majors.” Miller then said Tour players chided him on this bold prediction calling him “the stupidest guy.” Miller then chirps, “All those guys who said that, eat crow!”

But what Miller didn’t mention is how several years ago in a Miller Talks Golf column for Golf Digest, he hedged on his early lofty opinion of Woods and in fact doubted Tiger would remain a dominant player in his 30s and could well burn himself out. Unfortunately, Golf Digest doesn’t have the best online search engine for past articles so I can’t cite the text verbatim. But unless my memory had a shank here, I say Miller—whom I admire—is quite selective with his predictions about Tiger Woods. He’s back on-board now concerning Tiger’s dominance (well, who isn’t?) and his inevitable march past the Nicklaus Holy Grail record but it wasn’t always so.

A big bonus for NBC and the telecast on Sunday was getting Woods to agree, after he dusted off Stewart Cink 8 and 7 and thus with a lot of time to fill in the broadcast, to come up to the booth with Miller and Dan Hicks and review his past matches. Having Tiger up in the booth is a rare sighting indeed and it provided several interesting tidbits. Miller smartly asked Woods where the next young star is and why there aren’t more young players challenging him. Tiger answered saying the depth of talent in college and the pro circuits is so deep it’s difficult for players (mortal players?) to get wins under their belts and become more confident. There’s truth to the observation as well as some modesty at play here. Tiger did indeed experience astounding success as a junior. In fact, early in the week, he said his best year in golf (so far) was when he was 11 years old when he won all 36 juniors tournaments he entered. But let’s lay it on the line: Tiger is the best player of his generation if not in the game’s history. As someone once explained Shakespeare, “genius is genius.”

In the Mayakoba Classic PGA Tour event in Mexico, won by Brian Gay, Mt. Pleasant’s Doug LaBelle II had a solid final round of 67 and earned $8797. Marshall’s John Morse also competed, made the cut against his younger brethren, and collected $7210.

On the LPGA side in Hawaii, Grand Rapids native and former Michigan State player Allison Fouch failed to make the cut for the second week in a row but is now headed to Florida where she hopes to break through and cash a check.

On the Champions Tour, Michigan’s Jeff Roth tries to follow up on his fine T-13th showing in Florida by claiming another qualifying spot next Monday at the Toshiba Classic in Newport Beach, CA.

Last week we named a few of the great Michigan golf bars and asked our readers to send in some we missed. Here are two such missiles.

Hope all is well. One of the great pleasures in post-round life is knocking back a beverage or two out on the patio of the restaurant/club house at Crystal Downs. I'm referring to the stone-house up on the hill, not the pro shop (though that's a pretty cool place to hang as well). Spectacular views after a round on one of the world's great golf courses., , Bobby's Bar at Grand Hotel's Woods Restaurant on Mackinac Island is a great place to grab a pop. Grab some popcorn, chill in the leather chairs and soon enough you'll find yourself in the middle of a match on the country's oldest operating duckpin bowling alley., , At the Kingsley Club, on cool days and virtually every evening, they'll have a fire burning in the pit behind the clubhouse, which sits on a bluff overlooking the front nine. You can sit on the deck a sip a cold one, or gather around on Adirondack chairs and watch groups come in on 9 or 18. Pretty cool place as well., , , Craig Brass
