We started our visit with a breakfast with Tony Jacklin, who with Jack Nicklaus is opening a new luxurious golf complex in Sarasota, entitled "The Concession". "The Concession" is named after that 1969 Ryder Cup moment, when Jack Nicklaus conceded a 20 inch putt to Tony Jacklin that left the match square. If Jacklin would have missed the putt the U.S.would have won the match. It was and still is considered a classically grand gesture of golf sportsmanship.
We had a chance to chat with Rick Smith about the success his golf reality show, "The Big Break" had. Rick was beaming with the success of the show and the increased business that all of this television exposure is bringing to Treetops. He indicated that "The Big Break II" will be taped this summer, once again, right after the Par 3 Shootout.
Golf public relations must have been at a stand still in Michigan as the All About Golf crew of Jack Berry, Tom Cleary and Terry Moore and Kevin Frisch from Golf Marketing Services were making contact with some of their outstate clients. Jim Dewling, of Mystlc Creek, Larry Bowden of The Natural at Beaver Creek, Mike Brown, from A-Ga-Ming, Lance and Susy Avery from Pine Hollow near Jackson were ordering equipment and gear for their shops. Don Wyckoff of Umlex had us check out their very impressive booth at the show. Tim Ummel had most of his crew there pitching Nicklaus Art.
Vanessa Bell, MGTV reporter and her camera crew from MGTV were all over the place taping upcoming shows for the year. Along with "The Concession" show, Vanessa taped a special on women's golf fashion, paired with Kevin Frisch of GMS on an overview of the PGA Merchandise Show, interviewed Rick Smith about "The Big Break", held a lively interview with Damian Ryan of Tourism Ireland who told of his country getting ready for the 2006 Ryder Cup, interviewed Mary Sarazen and Al Barklow about their new book, "Gene Sarazen and The Wonderful World of Golf" now on sale by Clock Tower Press and finally, interviewed with Quentin Lutz and Steve Forrest of Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest Golf Design and their new course in Sweden.
We will bring you these shows as part of our Michigan Golfer Television schedule in the next few months.

COUNT DOWN TO THE RYDER CUP- THE 1929 MATCH

A crowd estimated at 10,000 turned out both days to witness Britain rally to a victory over a Walter Hagen-led team. After trailing 2 1/2 to 1 1/2 in the opening-day foursomes, the hosts displayed outstanding play in the singles at Moortown Golf Club. The Matches marked the debut of Henry Cotton, a 22-year-old who would eventually go on to win three British Open titles. And, it was a case of generosity by Hagen that may have cost the U.S. a victory. Hagen elected to let all his players have at least one match, while British Captain George Duncan played eight and had Percy Alliss and Stewart Burns on the sidelines. In one of the most stunning matches of any Ryder Cup competition, Duncan routed Hagen, 10 and 8. Meanwhile, Britain's Archie Compston sailed past Gene Sarazen, 6 and 4, and 22-year-old Henry Cotton downed Al Watrous, 4 and 3, to secure the Ryder Cup trophy.

WEST MICHIGAN GOLF SHOW OPENS TODAY
Carol Altman seems about as ready as you can get for the WMGS and their new digs.
Thousands of hibernating golfers will emerge from their dens this weekend, drop their TV remotes, and happily make their way to the DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids in search of a better golf game, a new driver, a golf vacation and even $25,000 in cash. The 16th annual West Michigan Golf Show opens its door at 4 PM Friday, Feb. 6 and ends at 5 PM Sunday, the 8th. Along with hundreds of booths representing every facet of the golf industry from state and sunbelt courses, resorts, equipment, apparel and golf schools---the Show will feature an indoor, fully landscaped golf hole at the Huntington Bank Par 3 Challenge. Here one lucky shotmaker holing an ace will pocket $25,000.
Hours for the Show are: 4 PM 9 PM on Friday, Feb. 6; 10 AM 7PM on Saturday, Feb. 7; and 10 AM 5 PM on Sunday, Feb. 8. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 6-14, and children 5 and under are free. THE 19TH HOLE-THE NATURAL LAWS OF GOLF-PART I
1. If you really want to get better at golf, go back and take it up at a much earlier age.
2. The game of golf is 90% mental and 10% mental.
3. Since bad shots come in groups of three, a fourth bad shot is actually the beginning of the next group of three.
4. When you look up, causing an awful shot, you will always look down again at exactly the moment when you ought to start watching the ball if you ever want to see it again..
5. Any change works for a maximum of three holes - - or at a minimum of not at all.
6. No matter how bad you are playing, it is always possible to play worse.
7. Never try to keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing.
8. When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one more club or two more balls.
9. If you're afraid a full shot might reach the green while the foursome ahead of you is still putting out, you have two options: you can immediately shank a lay-up, or you can wait until the green is clear and top a ball halfway there.
10. The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about the golf swing.
11. The inevitable result of any golf lesson is the instant elimination of the one critical unconscious motion that allowed you to compensate for all of your many other errors.
12. If it ain't broke, try changing your grip.
13. Golfers who claim they don't cheat, also lie.
14. Everyone replaces his divot after a perfect approach shot.
15. A golf match is a test of your skill against your opponent's luck.
16. It's surprisingly easy to hole a 50-foot putt when you lie 8.

SAY WHAT?-THE LEE TREVINO INTERVIEW

What is your favorite golf course?
Everyone thinks it is probably one that I have won a major championship on, but it is not. It is Cypress Point Golf Club near Pebble Beach. I have always said that if they wanted to put a ball and chain on me at that place, I would be quite content to never want to leave.
What is the best shot of your career?
I think it was in the Dunlop Masters in Woburn, England. I was trailing by one stroke coming to the last hole and hit a 3-wood shot 253 yards to within two inches of the hole. I ended up winning the tournament.
What is your favorite sports team?
Living in Dallas, I root for the Mavericks and the Stars and the Cowboys, but I guess I have always pulled for the Chicago Cubs. I enjoy watching them play, and maybe they will win it all here soon.
What was your first car?
I had a 1949 powder-blue Ford with a flat-eight engine. I paid $100 for it.
Now I drive a 1994 Chevrolet Suburban. I have got 62,000 miles on it. My wife wants me to buy another one, but this is my baby. I call it my school bus.
What is the oldest thing in your golf bag.?
Probably, my putter. I use an Arnold Palmer putter that was probably built back in 1954.
Who is the most famous person you have ever played golf with?
I have played golf with three U.S. presidents, but I guess the most interesting guy I have ever played with was King Hassan of Morocco. I went over there on a trip with Butch Harmon back in the early 1970s, and the King and I played five holes. I have never been that nervous in my life. I was in a strange country, and he had his own nine-hole course. The King came out of the palace, and I did not know what to do. Everyone was kissing his hands, but I wasn't not going to do that.
What is your worst fear?
I am not scared of very much. My wife, I guess. I have been hit by lightning and been in the Marine Corps for four years. I have traveled the world and been about everywhere you can imagine. There is not anything I am scared of except my wife.
