BREAKING NEWS-KING'S CHALLENGE FACES BIGGEST CHALLENGE YET
The former owners of the King's Challenge golf course in LeelanauCountry are suing Sugar Loaf Development LLC to foreclose on its currentmultimillion-dollar land contract, charging that it defaulted on itsDecember payment and failed to pay summer taxes. They also expect to put the property up for public auction this spring.

The investment group, headed by John D. Sills and his SJS DevelopmentCo., said the new owners failed to make a required payment of $12,500 onDec. 5 and owe about $27,000 in Cleveland Township property taxes duelast September. "The land contract has been in default since Sept. 15,2006 or longer," Norman Droste, attorney for Sills and his partners, wrote in a letter to the current owner. Droste said he sees no chancethat the new owners will retain control of the golf course. "Theforeclosure has commenced, and a judgment will be entered three monthsafter we filed the lawsuit," he said. That means the foreclosure wouldbe final in early April.

Court records indicate that Sugar Loaf Development LLC bought the162-acre golf course and adjacent property for $4.4 million in May 2005.

The golf course is south of M-22, next to the now-shuttered Sugar Loafresort. The resort's failure to resume operations has been seen as adrag on the viability of King's Challenge.Sugar Loaf Development paid $3 million for the golf course, itsbuildings and its fixtures, nearly $1 million for 115 adjacent acres, and about $400,000 for several additional parcels. The deal involved a $1,900,000 upfront payment, and the remainder wasscheduled to be paid in monthly installments until May 2010.

Edward Fleis and Brian Sculthorp, both residents of the Sugar Loaf areain Cedar, are members of Sugar Loaf Development. That entity, based inSuttons Bay, was formed just several months before the King's Challengepurchase in 2005. Neither could be reached for comment.

Sills' SJS Development is the general partner for the investment groupformed in 1990 to operate the golf course until it was sold to Fleis andSculthorp's group in 2005. Sills' group is known as the Sugar LoafRidge Development Limited Partnership and is based in Bloomfield Hills, state records indicate. Sills is apparently not foreclosing on Fleis andSculthorp's other golf course at Sugar Loaf, the Sleeping Bear GolfClub. Sleeping Bear was also purchased by a Sills-led partnership in May 2005.

MGN ON THE ROAD
Bellaire-Shanty Creek Resort
"It's a beautiful day at Shanty Creek" continues to be the first impression you get on the telephone of the resort and is now especially meaningful for staff members. Major plans are underway to upgrade the rooms and the main lodge this year. Lindsey Southwell, a representative of the marketing department, says the entire resort is excited by the plans. She indicated that a lot of locals are hearing commercials about the resort, something they have not heard for years.

Belding
We called Mike Husby from the road to catch up on what is happening in his world and the first thing he wanted to talk about was the play of Jeff Quinney. Quinney, who won the U.S. Amateur in 2000, was Mike's pick to win the 2002 Bay Mills Open, which he did. He faltered big time on the tour this weekend, but a first win is always the toughest. For those that want to relive that most telling Bay Mills victory and see Quinney hoist the cup on the 18th green, click on http://michigangolfer.tv/2002shows/baymillsopen/index.html

Husby, is starting his third year as the GM of Candlestone Inn in Belding. Candlestone Golf Course, home of the West Michigan Amateur, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The course was designed by the venerable Bruce Matthews and was one of his more memorable designs.

Gaylord
Plans are now underway to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Gaylord Golf Mecca, one of the most successful golf marketing groups in the state. Executive Director, Paul Beachnau, indicates that they have hired a new advertising firm, Tandem Design, to freshen up the brand and provide some energy for the golf organization. Beachnau was involved from the start on the development of the Golf Mecca. He also launched the Gaylord Area Convention and Visitors Bureau at the same time. Gaylord has experienced a great deal of regional and national publicity with its strong golf product and the exposure the area gets from shows like the Big Break and The Tylenol Par-3 Shootout. Beachnau, indicated that his office will be targeting outstate golf shows this year, with booths at Chicago, Fort Wayne and Cleveland.

Grand Rapids-West Michigan Golf Show
We are in Grand Rapids today for the opening of the West Michigan Golf Show. This show has always been a class act, since its inception by Terry Moore. Thad Gutowski and Joe Yunkman will be hosting the booth for our team this year, sostop by and say hello.

http://westmichigangolfshow.com

London- London Golf and Travel Show
While Thad Gutowski and joe Yunkman are holding down the WMGS, we will also be sending a team to the London Golf and Travel Show. Claudio Demarchi, show host, always has a nice turnout for the show. And who knows, you might bump into Kramer there, as you can buy Cuban cigars as well as book trips to there as well.

Oteggo Club
Osprey Management has quickly put its stamp on the venerable Otsego Club. Visitors will see a new approach to the main lodge, now heated for winter guests, a new Sitzmark that has a warmer feel to it and a vibrant Liquid Louie at the legendary Logmark watering hole. Liquid Louie's fantasy upgrades for the Logmark will happen this spring as they break ground for a new patio and porch and an overall easier access.

GM Kris Kray, just back from a Osprey corporate retreat in Florida, is in full planning mode with, Director of Golf, Mark Hogan. There will be some nips and tucks to the Otsego Club facilities and some beginning dialogue about changes to The Classic. The Classic was designed by William Diddle, who also designed The Summit course at Shanty Creek. Diddle, was also one of the original members of the American Society of Golf Course Architects.

Marsh Ridge Resort
Resort owner, Larry Bowden lost his very talented golf professional, Steve ---- who took a position at Yarrow in Augusta. The Natural is one of the Gaylord Golf Mecca's favorites. Designed by Jerry Matthews, The Natural is celebrating its 15th Anniversary. Bowden indicates that there will be a number of events that will help in the celebration of the anniversary.

Mancelona-Shanty Creek Resor/Schuss Mountain
Golf was far from the minds of the300 "Special Olympians" that partook in two days of winter games at the ski and golf complex. This is always a fun event. However, signs of the new ownership were evident in the newly carpeted lobby at Schuss and overall exuberance of the staff.

Treetops
We had a chance to chat with the new GM at Treetops, Michael Fernandez. He has worked at Ritz Carletons in Dearborn and Aspen with stops at other resort properties in Scottsdale and Miami. He is a skier having cut his teeth at Aspen, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass and Vail. That's good news for Treetops, a ski resort that really started off as Sylvan Knob and then Sylvan Resort under Harry Melling. The only other GM at Treetops that had a ski background was Bill Topham who was there in the late 80's and then went to SMI.

Each summer, Treetops captures the national golf spotlight with its popular Par 3 Shootout and just a few years ago, launched the Golf Channel's most popular series, The Big Break.with host Rick Smith. And according to Kevin McKinley, who doubles up on the ski side in winter, it has hit the rotation of many high rollers that jet around golfing some of the top properties in the U.S. "It never fails, the phones light up with interested golfers during the two day duration of the Tylenol Par 3 Shootout."

Tish Jankowski, marketing manager for the resort, realizes that the resort is going to have to continue to be aggressive in the market place to attract golfers. The Michigan economic downturn and the warm winter have had a significant economic impact on the entire resort industry in the north. Right now, it is all about keeping your market share and waiting for the economy to turn around.

SOMETIMES A GREAT NOTION
An Amish boy and his father were visiting a nearby mall. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny silver walls that moved apart and back together again by themselves.

The lad asked, "What is this, father?"

The father (having never seen an elevator) responded, "I have no idea what it is."

While the boy and his father were watching wide-eyed, an old lady in a wheelchair rolled up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched as small circles lit up above the walls. The walls opened up again and a beautiful twenty-four-year-old woman stepped out.

The father looked at his son anxiously and said, "Go get your mother."

JUST WONDERING
Can you cry under water?
How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?

Why do you have to "put your two cents in".. but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?

Once you're in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity?

Why does a round pizza come in a square box?

What disease did cured ham actually have?

How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?

Why are you IN a movie, but you're ON TV?

Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours? They're both dogs!

Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride; he sticks his head out the window?

Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Jack Minzey for these gems.
