BOOK REVIEW- "DREAM GOLF: THE MAKING OF BRANDON DUNES", BY STEPHEN
GOODWIN
If you hang around Dave Richards or Kevin Frisch of Resort & Golf
Marketing, very long, the topic of Tom Doak's Pacific Dunes will come up.
For an organization where hyperbole is not a second thought, they always
seemed to be fighting for words to describe, what is now considered as
Renaissance Golf's breakout course. While we have not seen it
ourselves, we were caught up enough to feature the course in our May/June
Issue in 2003 http://www.michigangolfer.com/may03/index.html
Stephen Goodwin's, "Dream Golf: The Making of Brandon Dunes² addresses
the dream of Chicago entrepreneur MikeKeiser. As quoted in the book,
"I wasn't interested in commercial golf. I was interested in dream
golf." Goodwin follows the making of the dream with the three architects
that have changed this stretch of Oregon coast into a golf Mecca that
rivals that of the Kohler group of courses in Wisconsin. However, whereas
Kohler, Herbert Kohl, kept going back to Pete Dye for his design,
Keiser chose Ben Crenshaw an unknown Scotsman, David Kidd, Tom Doak who had
one time had the tag of "enfant terrible' and the well respected team
of Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore. The trio built the now legendary,
Brandon Dunes, Pacific Dune and Brandon Trails. http://brandondunesgolf.com
The book is a great read for those that follow golf architecture and a
treasure for those that have followed the career of Tom Doak. The
reading also brought to mind the remarks that Tom Doak and his Renaissance
Golf team brought to a gathering of folks to celebrate his work on High
Pointe Golf Course and his latest, the Kidnappers Cove course in New
Zealand and his latest collaboration with Jack Nicklaus, Sebonac Golf
Club in New York.
The book, published by Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, will be out
soon.

ESPN TABBED TO BROADCAST FRIDAY COVERAGE OF THE RYDER CUP BEGINNING IN
2008
Sports cable giant ESPN will broadcast live Friday coverage of the
Ryder Cup in 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014, under an agreement with NBC Sports
announced today. ESPN also receives the right to re-air NBC coverage
and extended highlights of golf's most compelling event. NBC, which has
broadcast the Ryder Cup since 1991, will continue to broadcast the final
two days of competition.
"We are delighted to acquire first-day coverage of the Ryder Cup
beginning in 2008," said John Wildhack, ESPN senior vice president,
programming acquisitions and strategy. "The Ryder Cup is among the most
prestigious events in all of sports, providing some of the most memorable
moments in sports history. We look forward to working with The PGA of
America and NBC to continue to build on the legacy and international appeal
that is the Ryder Cup."
The Ryder Cup, among the last great sporting events founded on prestige
rather than prize money, spans 35 competitions over 79 years, pitting
12 of America's best golfers against Europe's in a three-day, match play
competition. In 2004, Europe defeated the United States 18? to 9? in
record-setting fashion at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield
Township, Mich.
