JACK BERRY NAMED RECIPIENT OF PGA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT IN JOURNALISM AWARD PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. Jack Berry, of W. Bloomfield, Mich., whose five decades of reporting featured more than 70 of golf's major Championships, as well as the promotion of the PGA Professional, has been named recipient of the 2007 PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism. Berry is the 18th individual to be recognized with this Award.

Berry, 75, will be honored April 4, 2007, at the 35th Golf Writers Association of America Annual Spring Dinner and Awards Ceremony at the Savannah Rapids Pavilion in Augusta, Ga.

"It is with a great deal of pride that The PGA of America presents this award to Jack Berry, a professional who has enlightened us all by both his attention to detail and wit, and has captured the best in the game of golf in his work," said PGA of America President Brian Whitcomb. "Mr. Berry has spent his journalistic career covering the landmark events, but he also has been a tireless servant of the game by promoting local golf and elevating the PGA Professional's vocation to the general public."

Born in Detroit, Berry began a lifelong love affair with sports as a baseball fan, following his father, Clair, who was the traveling secretary for the Detroit Tigers. Jack Berry picked up a golf club, his father's wooden-shaft driver, for the first time in high school. He learned the game through the late PGA Professional Chet Jawor, who was PGA head professional for Detroit's six municipal golf courses.

"I soon became a big fan of the PGA Professional," said Berry. "I always liked what they did for the game and all were good guys and completely different than the Tour professional. I was fortunate that the two newspapers where I worked (Detroit Free Press and Detroit News) had a good tradition of local golf coverage.

I enjoyed the opportunity to work with people in the community in covering golf. I am very honored to receive this Award, considering those who have preceded me."

Berry attended Marquette University from 1949-1951, and also served two years in the U.S. Army from 1952-54. Upon his discharge, he finished his college education and graduated from Michigan State University in 1956. His journalism career began as a correspondent for United Press (1956-59), where he distinguished himself through his versatility, covering professional and local sports as the wire service's sports editor for the state of Michigan. Berry joined the Detroit Free Press in 1959, and spent the next 12 years on the sports staff. He marked his first Tour event when he covered the 1958 Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Mich.

His professional sports "beat" featured the Detroit Red Wings of the then-six-team National Hockey League; and he marked his first major Championship in 1961, at the U.S. Open at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich.

Berry joined the Detroit News in 1971, and remained its premier golf writer through 1993, during which time he developed a relationship with Michigan PGA Professionals and the Free Press Junior Golf Program, which collaborated with the Detroit Recreation Department. It is a program "that was a forerunner to today's First Tee in providing opportunities for young people to join the game," said Berry.

In 1984, Berry was named the 27th president of the Golf Writers Association of America, making him the second journalist from the Detroit News (preceded by John Walter in 1958-59) to hold that position. Berry also served as GWAA secretary-treasurer from 1990-98.

Following his Detroit News' career, Berry became one of the most prolific golf freelance writers, with columns and features appearing in PGA Magazine, Chicagoland Golf and the Michigan Golfer. He is the recipient of the 1997 Golf Association of Michigan Distinguished Service Award. In 2003, he became the second journalist inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame, joining the late Walter. Among the members of the Michigan Hall of Fame are legendary five-time PGA Champion and founding PGA member Walter Hagen, and 1953 PGA Champion Walter Burkemo.

Berry marked the 1986 Masters, when Jack Nicklaus conquered Augusta National Golf Club at age 46, as not only his most memorable golf event as a reporter, but also a defining moment in his life. Berry nearly died following the Masters. He was stricken with acute viral myocarditis two weeks earlier at the Players Championship. After enduring great pain and energy loss during the Masters, he arrived home to enter the emergency room of the local hospital.

"I arrived with heart, liver and kidney failure, and in shock," said Berry. "I almost made the final six-footer."

Some two years later, Berry's recovery was complete, as he competed in the New York City Marathon.

His reporting has also ventured into horse racing, where he chronicled Secretariat's path to the 1973 Triple Crown; to Super Bowl VII, where the Miami Dolphins became the NFL's first and only unbeaten championship team at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1973; and to Lake Placid, N.Y., where the 1980 United States Olympic Hockey Team upset the squad from the former Soviet Union in the famous "Miracle on Ice."

Berry and his wife, Bonnie Humm, live in W. Bloomfield. He is the father of four daughters: Anne Daugherty, of Birmingham, Mich., Susan Berry, of Chicago, Karen Gebhardt, of Cedar Springs, Mich., and Jill Berry, of Chicago.

The PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism, first presented in 1989, honors members of the media for their steadfast promotion of golf. Past Award winners include: Dick Taylor, Herbert Warren Wind, Jim Murray, Frank Chirkinian, Bob Green, Dan Jenkins, Furman Bisher, Jack Whitaker, Dave Anderson, Ken Venturi, Jim McKay, Kaye Kessler, Nick Seitz, Renton Laidlaw, Bob Verdi, Al Barkow and Ron Green Sr.

The Award selection committee is composed of representatives from The PGA of America, PGA Tour, USGA, LPGA Tour, Champions Tour, European Tour, Golf Superintendents Association of America, National Golf Course Owners Association, American Society of Golf Course Architects, National Golf Foundation and past recipients.

The PGA of America is the world's largest working sports organization, comprised of 28,000 men and women golf Professionals who are the recognized experts in growing, teaching and managing the game of golf, while serving millions of people throughout its 41 PGA Sections nationwide. Since its founding in 1916, The PGA of America has enhanced its leadership position in a $62 billion-a-year industry by growing the game of golf through its premier spectator events, world-class education and training programs, significant philanthropic outreach initiatives and award-winning golf promotions. Today's PGA Professional is the public's link to the game, serving an essential role in the operation of golf facilities throughout the country.

SPRING IS SPRUNG...ALMOST!
By Thad Gutowski

Well, the West Michigan Golf Show did it again! Thousands of golfers suffering from cabin fever, or as the unsophisticated might call it shack wacky, were rewarded with a plethora of opportunities to pursue this coming golf season.

Over 150 exhibitors filled the DeVos Center in Grand Rapids this past weekend to promote their products and services. Resorts from Florida to the Upper Peninsula beckoned those crowding the aisles, and equipment marketers had every conceivable answer to how to hit the ball better. The mood of the crowd was most upbeat and sent the signal that this was going to be a great season for all concerned.

We looked at all the exhibits and talked to many who were as they say, staffing the booths. Though almost all had a lot to offer, we selected three that were best of show. The envelope please!

€ The Traverse City Convention & Visitors Bureau made a significant statement with their booth size, design and staffing. This is the second year that TCCVB is promoting Michigan¹s Golf Coast: 19 challenging courses and a like number of lodging facilities. But here is where their program is unique everything from reserving tee times to hotel reservations can be booked with one phone call to a central call center, making time consuming and frustrating multiple calls a part of the past. Here is a classic example of one call does it all: 888.499.4503

€ The busiest spot on the show floor was the long line waiting for an et gratis lesson at the Boyne Country Golf Academy booth. Or shall we say booths; ten to be exact, each staffed by a Boyne teaching professional, eager to help you get your game in shape. This was certainly an outstanding way to show prospects first-hand what the well regarded golf school at Boyne is all about.

€ Certainly one of the most optimistic elements of Michigan golf is Osprey Recreational Properties. Many are familiar with their excellent courses: Manistee National, Wilderness Valley and the Medalist. But Osprey put their brand on the regional golf scene when they purchased the venerable Otsego Club a few months ago. Along with excellent lodging, dinning and skiing this Northern Michigan icon has two excellent golf courses, the most notable being the Tribute which opened four years ago. This award-winning course is truly outstanding. Along with many memorable features the Tribute invented the term ³significant elevation changes.²

Thanks to all at the Western Michigan Golf Show for making a difficult and unpleasant winter a little more tolerable.

MGN ON THE ROAD
Grand Rapids
The WMGS offered up its 19th edition to an admiring public this past week. The show had 175 vendors to greet the 10,000 showgoers during sunny and brisk skies that foretold of a waning winter season. Generally, the vendors felt heartened by the turnout and after a few more of these shows, will await spring and the beginning of Michigan's 111th golf season.

Pat and Jim Healey dropped by our booth to discuss their next adventure. Last year, we chronicled their 50 States, 10 Provinces and Washington D.C. golf trip extravaganza now online at http://michigangolfer.tv/2006shows/healey/ This year, they will begin a trip to visit every ballpark in the Major Leagues during a time when the Tigers are part of the game. It will take them a few years, but it is time they have are fully enjoying.

Steve Helmer, formerly of The Natural, has taken a position with the Yarrow Golf Conference Center in Augusta. Helmer will team up with Toby Hilton, Director of Marketing, in an effort to bring more of the golfing public to this marvelous Ray Hearn design.

Mike Brown of A Ga Ming, says they will be breaking ground on their new clubhouse soon and to look for it to be up by July. The new clubhouse will be the latest in improvements to the complex, which now features the original Chick Harbert designed A Ga Ming and the new Sundance GC by Jerry Matthews.

Judy Mason, Director of Golf at Michaywe and a top golf instructor at Treetops Golf Academy, will begin her 10th year at the school. These are the upcoming dates of her women only classes.

Scott Hebert was on hand at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa booth. He is still in his first year as the head professional at the resort. He launched his winter golf school earlier this year and was encouraged by the turnout.

Carolyn Alt, WMGS show manager, indicated that they were very pleased with this year¹s show on several levels. "The attendance and enthusiasm of golfers ready for spring, the positive feedback provided by sponsors and exhibitors, the response to our seminar speakers, media exposure to the game and to the industry, and the contribution to local charity, all added up to another successful show,²she said.

London
London is a city best seen in the summer time, when you can enjoy all the parks that surround the Thames River as it meanders through this town of 200,000. We usually stop by every couple of years to chat with Claudio DeMarchi, who owns and manages the London Golf and Travel Show.

Usually, the Michigan representation at the show is substantial. This year, Michigan golf was represented by; Black Forest/Wilderness Valley, Flint Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Garland, Gull Lake Inn, Hidden River Golf And Casting Club, Lakeview Golf Resort & Spa, Lakewood Shores Resort, Manistee National Club, Mt. Pleaseant CVB, Saginaw CVB, and The Otsego Club.

There were many other state destinations at the show, including Santee Tourism, Mississippi, Ohio and Kentucky. Also, the more exotic destinations like Bermuda and Barbados were there.

MAUREEN ORCUTT DIES AT 99
Maureen Orcutt recently garnered a quarter page obit in the New York Times. As reported byFrank Litsky,Orcutt was one of nation's most outstanding golfers for almost a half-century and one of the first women to become a sportswriter.

Starting in 1922, Orcutt won more than 65 major tournaments. Her first major, at age 19, was the 1922 Women's Metropolitan Amateur Championship Tournament. Her last major came at the age 61. However, she still won the Durham N.C club championship at the age of 81. She played in the first four Curtis Cups and was runner-up for the U.S. Amateur in 1927 and 1938.

She was the best women's golfer at the time with few equals., and had few equals, It was reported that Babe Didriksen Zaharias stalked off the course one day after she was beaten by Orcutt. Babe left without paying Orcutt their $10 wager.

Orrcutt also played in exhibitions with the best male professionals. She was barely in her 20s when Walter Hagen , the celebrated pro, arrived in Augusta and learned she wouldl be his partner in an exhibition.

'It would et a lady golfer,' Hagan said sarcastically.

Orcutt owvehead him.''I didn't say anything,'"she once recalled. "But the next day, I carried Hagen for nine holes and we won."

Orcutt coud regularly hit the ball 240 yards .

Her father, Benjamin Sinclair Orcutt was an assistant editor of the Sunday New York Times. She got involved in journalism by covering women's golf for "The New Yourk Journal", "The New York Evening World," " The North American Newspaper Alliance, "Golf Illustrated" and the "Nation'a Golf Review." It was 1937, when she began writing a column entitled "Women in Sports", for the "New York Times". For years, she was the only women among some 50 men in the sports department.

Content and quotes were liberally taken from "Maureen Orcutt, 99, Golf Champion, Dies", by Frank Litsky. The article appeared in the January 12, 2007 New York Times, page C17.
