MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION
"John Daly Grips it and Rips it at the Niagara Falls Gorge"
====================================================
John Daly rolled into town to open his new Thundering Waters Golf Course near Niagara Falls, last year and the welcoming folks cooked up one of those Daly exhibitions that everyone seems to love. This one had Daly trying to drive the Niagara Falls Gorge, 342 yards, from tee box to the edge of the gorge on the other side. It was great theater for the great one. Enjoy.

MICHIGAN GOLF SHOW FIRES UP THIS WEEKEND
==========================================
This is the biggie of golf shows, the Michigan Golf Show and everybody is pointing to it. The WMGS got things underway last week, with their record breaking attendance three day show. Now it is time for the Michigan Golf Show, the largest consumer golf show in the country.

One of the things to look for, and this item was passed on to us by Dale Perne', owner of P&A Photography, is the Buick Open Trophy. This is the 50th year for the tournament and part of the celebration is having the trophy at the show. If you want, you can get a picture of yourself with the trophy. Look for the P&A Photography booth, #218.

Cathal O'Sullivan, for O'Sullivan Golf and Travelwill be dropping by from the Emerald Isle again this year. He is working with the Osprey Recreation Group and GAM in trying to get folks to visit Ireland this year. We went last year and had a blast.

The Big Five northern resorts of Boyne, Otsego Club, Treetops, Crystal Mountain and Shanty will be on hand to lobby for you golfing dollar. Plus, there are a ton of golf schools you can sign up for or equipment you can buy.

Anyway, lots to do, and we hope to see you there. Stop by our booth and say hi.

MICHIGAN GOLFER ON THE ROAD
==============================
Madison, Wisconsin
The state was in mourning this morning, as Brett Favre announced his retirement. A tough day to be in town. I was in Green Bay about 15 years ago, when my son was honored for a play he had written, and we watched the Packers-Lions game on the lobby bar television while waiting to leave for the ceremony. The spirit in that room continued to rise as Favre put away the Lions, until it was deafening. It was an amazing moment and one I had not remembered until this morning. Cheers to Brett Favre.

This is a great state for golf, and while today is not the day for it, it still conjurs up some of the great courses the Michigan Golfer has reported on in year's past. The ferry service between the two states makes it even more attractive to sample each others courses. Obviously, the Kohler complex of four great golf courses is the main draw in Wisconsin. However, while Whistling Straits gets deserved nods as a great course, the River course at Blackwolf Run was one of my early and still great favorities. You can also add its sister course, The Meadows, to the list of great courses as well.

Other terrific courses we have played include:
University Ridge
Geneva National
Lake Arrowhead GC
Sentry World
Abby Springs GC
Grand Geneva Resort
Trappers Turn
The Bull at Pinehurst Farms
Horseshoe Bay
The Bog
Kettle Hills

GOLF EMAIL MARKEING: HOW MANY IS TOO MANY?
=============================================
7 FREQUENCY FACTS for EMAIL MARKETING
1. Whether it's once a day, a week or month tell your customer what the deal is and stick to it.
2. Send the same 'type' of message each time. If you write articles, stick with articles. If you send two sentence "reminders" stick with it.
3. Once a day is too ambitious for a golf course.
4. Once a week is what we recommend for a golf course, but that seems difficult for most achieve.
5. Once every two-weeks (twice a month) is doable but is still hard for most to achieve it.
6. Once a month very consistently is a great starting point, but it's still hard. BEWARE!
7. Every other month? You might be a slacker. Don't even try email marketing.
6 MOVES THAT MAINTAIN MOMENTUM
1. Sit down with a calendar. Plot out when you will send your emails.
2. Write the subject lines for all 12 email messages.
3. Email them to requests@coursetrends.com with a check for $3600 and be done until next year :)
4. Create a detailed system for everything. Appoint one person to "own" the system and make it happen each month.
5. Set up a reminder in your Outlook or on your Mobile Phone. Have it ping you on email campaign day.
6. Associate it. Every second-Tuesday is the manager meeting? Make it the email marketing day, too!

SNOW WONDER
==============
December 1 - 6:00 PM. It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow.

December 4 - We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the Whole World? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life.

December 12 - The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we'll definitely
have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. I don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor.

December 14 - Snow lovely snow; last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took mybreath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way

December 15 - 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels.
Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after
all.

December 16 - Ice storm this morning. Fell on my butt on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.

December 17 - Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets
on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.

December 20 - Electricity's back on, but had another dump of the damn stuff last night.. More shoveling. Took all day. Damn snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.

December 25 - Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white crap fell today, and it's so cold it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to poop. By the time I got undressed, pooped and dressed again, I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a snowplow on his truck for the rest of the winter; but he says he's too busy. I think the jerk is lying.

December 30- Only 2 inches of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she nuts!!! Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she's lying.

January 12 - Snow packed so hard by snowplow, I broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the son of a bitch who drives that snowplow I'll drag him through the snow by his testicals and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and
open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplow.

January 15 - Merry -bleeping- Christmas! 20 more inches of the damn slop tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's a fricking idiot. If I have to watch "It's A Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave.

January 19 - Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.

February 9- Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze, plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me $1,400 to replace all my pipes.

Februrary 13 - Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. THE WIFE is driving me crazy!!!

February 22 - 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?

February 25 Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plow driver and he is now suing me for a million dollars, not only for the beating I gave him but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his ass. The wife went home to her mother as predicted.

February 29 - I set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.

March 7- Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed? Wait a minute, I think the Michigan Golf Show is this weekend. Yes, Yes it is. I'm saved. Is this a great country or what?

A BIT OF IRISH HUMOR
====================
Six retired Irishmen were playing poker in the clubhouse after a round of golf. Suddenly, Paddy Murphy loses $500 on a single hand, clutches his chest, and drops dead at the table. Showing respect for their fallen brother, the other five continue playing standing up.

Michael O'Conner looks around and asks, "Oh, me boys, someone got's to tell Paddy's wife. Who will it be?" They draw straws. Paul Gallagher picks the short one. They tell him to be discreet, be gentle, don't make a bad situation any worse.

"Discreet??? I'm the most discreet Irishmen you'll ever meet. Discretion is me middle name. Leave it to me."

Gallagher goes over to Murphy's house and knocks on the door. Mrs. Murphy answers, and asks what he wants. Gallagher declares, "Your husband just lost $500, and is afraid to come home."

"Tell him to drop dead!", says Murphy's wife.

"I'll go tell him." says Gallagher.

Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Jack Minzey.

PINK ON THE LINKS 2008
=====================
CHAMP Spikes plans to expand its Pink on the Links program for 2008 by adding an eBay charity auction and increasing player participation with the addition of international and national Tours. CHAMP created Pink on the Links in 2007 as a way to raise funds for breast cancer research.

Following the Mother’s Day tournaments, CHAMP and eBay will auction off autographed golf memorabilia for collectors of all ages including tournament worn shoes by top PGA and LPGA golfers. Memorabilia will be exclusive to Pink on the Links and the auction will feature items from all of the professional tournaments held during Mother’s Day weekend.

“Our main goal with Pink on the Links is to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research, ” said Harris MacNeill, President of CHAMP. “This disease strikes so many women. We hope all golfers choose to support the fight. We want to capitalize on the success of our inaugural year and have players on every major tour wearing the pink and white spikes in 2008.”

CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN EARNS TWO SPECIAL MICHIGAN PGA AWARDS
===========================================================
Michigan Section of the PGA has honored Crystal Mountain Director of Golf, Brad Dean with the Merchandiser of the Year award and awarded Director of Instruction, Scott Wilson the President's Plaque.

Scott Wilson is the second Crystal Mountain instructor to receive the Michigan PGA's President's Plaque Award, joining Ina Davis who won the honor in 2006. The President's Plaque is given to a PGA professional who has shown exceptional commitment to growing the game of golf.

In addition to working within Crystal's Junior Elite program, one that has produced three of the last six Michigan Amateur champions, Wilson has spent countless hours promoting programs such as Play Golf America and Link Up 2 Golf. In addition, he has provided FREE lessons and clinics at golf shows, demo days, and local PGA Tour events and developed programs tied to local schools, junior camps, and section programs like Midnight Golf.

Brad Dean added to his long list of accolades, including 2002 Michigan PGA Golf Professional of the Year, receiving the Merchandiser of the Year award. The honor recognizes Dean and Crystal Mountain for its excellence in business and merchandising among Michigan resorts.

Golf for Women magazine has recognized the resort's extensive selection of women's apparel and golf equipment by including Crystal among its list of "Top 50 courses." Custom club fitting included in golf schools and private lessons, elegant displays, and moderate prices for both men and women have set Crystal apart among golfers and the Michigan PGA.

"The quality and continued growth of our golf product is a direct result of Brad and Scott's skill and hard work," said Jim MacInnes, president and general manager of Crystal Mountain. "They were the first two PGA professionals we hired at Crystal and we're more and more pleased with this decision everyday."

NAME CHANGE
=============
The Yarrow Golf & Conference Center is now, says Kimberly Wilkes, the Yarrow Golf & Conference Resort. Let's hope the name change will bring more of an awareness of the special properties of this facility. It was this a corporate getaway for years that was enjoying a quiet success. Basically, people liked it because it was away from everything. However, an ill wind, blew down the forest around them and a decision to build a golf course on this newly nuded land, was made. Ray Hearn, et. al., came in and designed a terrific course and waited for the golfers to discover the new layout. The features that made the conference center so special, proved to be a problem with getting golfers there. It was a tough place to find, and you had to pass a lot of great golf courses before you got there.

Steve Helmer is the golf professional at Yarrow, starting his second year after spending a number of years in the Gaylord Golf Mecca, at The
Natural.
