MICHIGAN GOLFER ON THE ROAD
==============================
Lansing-Lansing Golf Show
The "Friday is Free" day for seniors has been and continues to be a huge hit at the Lansing Golf Show. As attendees filed into the show at the 2:00, it seemed that 80% of the early show goers went in the senior entrance. Of course, that made a lot of sense, as most of these folks were retired and not working. Anyway, it immediately packed the show and the vendors were quickly put to work.

This show has always been up against March Madness and they have always done a nice job accommodating the fans. They had a lounge in the middle of the show, with 6-8 flat screen tv's turned on to the games. There was also a bar next to the lounge area as well. Nice touch.

There were fewer booths at the show this year, a trend that seems to mirror the state of our economy. There were times in the late 80's and 90's where there were 10-15 new booths each yea,r just to market the new golf courses coming on board. This year, the only new course Michigan has is Sweetgrass, located in Harris, near Escanaba, in the U.P.

REMOTE OBSERVATIONS By Terry Moore
====================================
Here's a suggestion: let's give Tiger Woods a real challenge, like combating high gasoline prices or shoring up the U.S. financial markets. That's my thought after watching Tiger win this past weekend in spectacular fashion at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando. Going into the tournament, I thought Tiger's current victory streak might end simply due to the spotty conditions of Bay Hill's greens. But even bumpy and uneven putting surfaces couldn't break Tiger's tremendous willpower to get the ball into the hole. The most telling Tour statistic was Tiger's ability to scramble, getting it up and down and into the hole for par, when he missed the green in regulation. For the week, Tiger was 17 out of 22 (75%) for getting up and down for par while the rest of the field averaged 57%. This is the essence of Tiger's mastery—the ability to make big putts not merely on the 72nd hole but throughout the tournament. For the week, Tiger only suffered one three-putt, that occurring on the 10th hole of the final round.

The other observation is how Tiger corralled his oft-wayward driver on the tight, demanding fairways of Bay Hill. During the last two rounds—when he went 66-66—Tiger smartly used his three-metal and five-metalwoods to keep his tee-ball in play. As a result, he never incurred more than a bogey during the event and only five bogies for the week. In contrast, Vijay never recovered from a disastrous stretch of bogey-double-bogey-bogey on Saturday which brought the entire field back into the tourney.

Meanwhile, the NBC telecast was solid with the incomparable Johnny Miller reigning supreme with timely and frank commentary. Yes, Miller can get too chatty at times but no one consistently offers such keen insight and historical references. I particularly like Miller's "institutional memory" when it comes to the game, courses, the Tour and its players. This is one big plus Miller has over Nick Faldo. Faldo is good but he doesn't have the same depth of experience and intimacy with the PGA Tour and as a result doesn't make as many apt connections as Miller does. And Miller setting the stage on 18 for Tiger's putt with the stat that he hadn't sunk anything over 20 feet all week was "priceless." (Fittingly, MasterCard was an event sponsor.)

I also relished NBC's Jimmy Roberts' interview with host Arnold Palmer on Sunday when Palmer's U.S Amateur victory in Detroit in 1954 (at the CC of Detroit) was cited. But the Arnie story that really caught my ear was the King retelling the story of the 1958 Masters when he played a practice round with Ben Hogan. Palmer related how he and his partner Dow Finsterwald took $35 in a friendly wager from Hogan and Jackie Burke Jr. Palmer recalled overhearing the ever-grumpy Hogan asking Burke afterwards, "How did that guy (Arnie) get into this tournament?" Of course, Palmer had the last laugh because he won the first of four green jackets that year.

This weekend Tiger will attempt to surpass Hogan's win total of 64 Tour victories. If he were still alive, Hogan wouldn't bet $5 let alone $35 against him.

=========================================================================
Kevin McKinley, Director of Golf for Treetops Resort, indicated that Treetops will once again, provide online video coverage for a number of their events and tournaments this year. In addition, the resort will feature shows on their Couples Golf School, headed up by Gene Bone II, Head Professional at the Jones Course. The same day coverage of the Par 3 and the Pepsi tournaments, will be the first time that this type of coverage has taken place. In the You Tube and iPhone era of communication, people have an elevated their expectations on video coverage. BOOK REVIEW: "THE LONG DRIVE BIBLE" By Sean "The Beast" Fister and Matthew Rudy
========================================================================
For openers, the book's foreword is by John Daly, who used to beat Sean Fister off the tee like a drum in their younger days. Fister, tiring of that abuse, developed a training program for himself and began to outdrive Daly on a regular basis.

"The Long Drive Bible" is a great grip it and rip it book for those that aspire to increase their length without the bother of those little pills they try to sell you online. Fister's resume is impressive, as his longest recorded drive was 515 yards, his longest drive in competition 450 yards, his fastest recorded club head speed, 171.2 mph and his fastest recorded ball speed, 218 mph.

Fister does a nice job in allowing the reader into his world and how he addresses the competitive world he lives in. I was introduced a little bit to this life, when I golfed with Evan "Big Cat" Williams when he was representing Garland about 15 years ago. It really is unbelievable how far they hit.

Here are his 10 Commandments of Distance
1) Take a wide stance.
2) Tee it up forward and high.
3) Keep your wrists "oily".
4) Take it back low and slow.
5) Keep your thumbs away from your chest.
6) Turn your left shoulder over you knee at the top (if lefthanded, do the opposite.)
7) Rotate don's slide.
8) Tighten your downswing angle. (This is called "the snap")
9) Keep your head behind the ball at impact.
10) This is the most important and for the that you need to buy his bookl

INDIANA'S HISTORIC FRENCH LICK RESORT CASINO NAMED SITE OF 2010 PGA PROFESSIONAL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
========================================================================================================
French Lick Resort Casino of French Lick, Ind., site of the 1924 PGA Championship, which marked a remarkable major winning streak by legendary Walter Hagen, has been named the site of the 43rd PGA Professional National Championship. The showcase event for PGA Professionals will be conducted in June 2010.

It will mark the first visit by the PGA Professional National Championship to Indiana, and to a resort that features courses designed by two of the game's legendary golf architects – Donald Ross and Pete Dye.

The National Championship, featuring a nationwide field of 312 PGA Professionals, will utilize the par-70, 7,000-yard Donald Ross Course, which opened in 1917 and the par-72, 7,400-yard Pete Dye Course, which is scheduled for a grand opening in the spring of 2009. The Championship's final two rounds will be conducted on the Pete Dye Course.

"The PGA Professional National Championship has maintained a tradition of bringing this showcase event to some of the premier courses in the country," said PGA of America President Brian Whitcomb. "It is exciting to have the opportunity to bring the Championship to the site where Walter Hagen, one of our Association founders, elevated his legend. I can think of no better story for our finest playing PGA Professionals than to compete for the Walter Hagen Cup in Indiana."

The Donald Ross Course, the creation of famed Scottish architect Donald Ross, also has hosted the 1959 and 1960 LPGA Championship and was the home of the Midwest Amateur from the 1930s through the 1950s. Coincidentally, Dye captured the 1957 Midwest Amateur on the course.

The Donald Ross Course completed a $6 million renovation program in 2006, conducted by architect Lee Schmidt of Scottsdale, Ariz., which restored the original Ross design.

GOLF'S REVISED RULES FOR SENIORS
=================================
Rule # 1
A ball sliced or hooked into the rough shall be lifted and placed on the fairway at a point equal to the distance it carried or rolled into the rough with no penalty. Senior
players should not be penalized for uncontrollable mechanical phenomena.

Rule # 2
A ball hitting a tree shall be deemed not to have hit the tree. This is simply bad luck and luck has no place in a scientific game. The player must estimate the distance the ball would have traveled had it not hit the tree and can play the ball from there.

Rule # 3
There shall be no such thing as a lost ball. The missing ball is on or near the course and will eventually be found and pocketed by someone else, making it a stolen ball. The player is not to compound the felony by charging him or herself with a penalty stroke.

Rule # 4
If a putt passes over a hole without dropping in it is deemed to have dropped. The law of gravity supersedes the law of golf.

Rule # 5
Putts that stop close enough to the cup that they can be blown in may be blown in. This does not apply to balls more than three inches from the hole. No one wants to make a travesty of the game.

Rule # 6
There is no penalty for so called "out of bounds". If penny pinching golf club owners bought sufficient land, this would not occur. The golfer deserves an apology not a penalty.

Rule # 7
The is no penalty for ball in a water hazard as golf balls should float. That they do not is a technical problem that manufactures have yet to overcome. Golfers should not be punished for manufacture's shortcomings.

Rule # 8
Advertisements proclaim that golf scores can be improved by purchasing new clubs, balls, shoes etc., and since this financially impossible for the average Senior golfer, a stroke per hole may be subtracted for using old equipment.

[Thanks to Steve Kilbride]

HOW HE GOT THE NAME LORD BYRON
================================
"After I won the Masters in '37, O.B. Keeler, who was a sportswriter for the Atlanta Journal and AP, interviewed me in the upstairs locker room that the pros used during the tournament. Things had kind of quieted down by then, and he said, "Byron, I watched you play the back nine today and it reminded me of a piece of poetry that was written by Lord Byron when Napoleon was defeated at the battle of Waterloo." We did the rest of the interview then, and the next day, the headline in the article of the Associated Press read "Lord Byron Wins Masters", and the nickname stuck."
