MGN ON THE ROAD Ann Arbor Michigan Golfer Television Show host, Bill Shelton, takes a break from his duties as Interim Chancellor of East Carolina University, to tape a series of Michigan Golfer Television Shows this week. He will team up with his on camera partner, "The Haig" (played by Michael McCafferty) to product seven more Ryder Cup shows for the upcoming year. Novi-The Michigan Golf Show Laurie McCann was extremely pleased with the turnout for last week's Michigan Golf Show. She, as do others, feel an upturn in the business is forth coming. The lines were long each morning as thousands of golfers waited to get into the show. Wait, instead of me telling you, let's hear it from Laurie "Art - We had a great weekend - attendance was up significantly over last year and last year was GREAT! Final number 34,016 - up 13%. Retailers did unbelievable - one guy said he's been doing shows for 15 years and 20 shows/year and this was his best one ever by 30%!!!! We have already had 65 exhibitors sign up for next year! Lansing is two booths from being sold out! Everyone is really excited - timing seems to be great - final show of the show season! We will see you next weekend!" Laurie Architects Arthur Hills was on hand to sign copies of his book, "The Works of Art". Art was assisted on the book by partner Steve Forest and wordsmith Michael Patrick Shiels. Art had the opportunity to tape an upcoming special on the Arthur Hills Golf Trail, with Jack Berry. Chatting with Art and Jack were Bernie Friedrich of Boyne, Jim Roland of Stonebridge, Ty Love of The Thoroughbred, Gordon Marmion of Fieldstone, Jode Ellis of Red Hawk and Rich Apodaca of Fox Hills. The shows will debut later next month. W. Bruce Matthews III was also on hand to hype his latest, Angel's Crossing. He was working the booth with head pro Mike Hill and owner Jim Thompson. Ray Hearn blazed by our booth, but that is the speed he needs to travel to keep up with what is on his plate. He reorganized his company, during a time when he had many projects in the works, including the new Macatawa Legends Golf Club in Holland. Mike Husby's bulldozers are silent for the moment as he continues to build up play at The Loon and administer the Bay Mills Open Canadian Tournament. John Jessup, of High Pointe, indicated that their Triple Play has been going great guns, doubling every year in play. Dave Hill of The Big Chief is pumped because the new Hawk's Eye is coming on board this year. Darin Philport said that Hidden River Golf and Casting Club had a good year and is looking forward to 2004. Peter Fitzsimmons, of the Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Boyne CVB was running out of brochures. He felt the show was solid. Larry Bowden, of Beaver Creek Resort was back from the south all tanned and ready to go. Judy Mason, has slipped into her new duties as the Director of Golf at Michaywe. She is also on tap to due her highly successfull golf schools at Treetops. Bill Fountain continues to do well at the Majestic. He has a first rate team and is always concentrating on giving customers a quality golf experience. Doug Bell has his hands full, but he seems to be loving it. The Osprey company that owns and manages Manistee National and The Medalist has now entered into an agreement with Dave Smith to manage Wilderness Valley and Tom Doak's Black Forest. Greg Babinec was looking good in the Arcadia Bluffs booth, getting people excited about playing that sensational course. Nick Nerbonne of the Homestead Resort was telling us about the new Dave Pelz village being planned for their area. Mark Hogan indicated that the Otsego is coming off a great ski year and that their "Take us out for a Test Drive" campaign was very successful. Sandra Snook was booking rooms faster than you can say "Golf On The Brink". Her successful Pine Cone Accommodations is partnering with Michaywe, The Loon, Marsh Ridge, all located on Brink Road in Gaylord, to serve the lodging needs of discerning clients. The Preserve has a new team in this year, who are promising great service, great golf and great rates. Dave Richards and Kevin Frisch were all over the place, working with their clients. Golf Marketing Services is working with the Travel Michigan folks to leverage all of the media we are getting on the Ryder Cup and trying to turn that into Michigan rounds of golf this year and in the foreseeable future. The Golf Marketing crew were also heavily involved with getting Crystal Mountain and Fox Hills GC together for the extension of the Brad Dean Golf School. Barry Redmond will be the go to pro at the Fox Hills layout. Bay Valley Resort was working hard to attract golfers to their layout. The hotel has been completely renovated and is a terrific place to go to or visit on the way north. Jon Maddern and Scott Landane were working the booth for Elk Ridge. Jon is fresh off his year of being President of the National Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. Kurt Kraly and Barry Beard from Club Car were extolling the virtues of their latest Club Car. Sue Nielson, the director of the inaugural 2005 Muskegon Golf Show, was on hand as well as Ty Love of The Thoroughbred, to talk up the event. The Muskegon Golf Show will be the second golf show in the last two years to open. This past spring, The Jackson Golf Show opened to tolerable enough numbers that they are already planning for next year. Author of "How to Quit Golf", Craig Brass stopped by to chat. His mystery novel with the Grand Hotel as the setting has been put on hold as he needs to devote more time to his business. He is excited about the 9th Annual Jeff Daniels Golf Jam now scheduled for the Polo Fields on May 24th. MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION SHOW-WALTER HAGEN AND THE RYDER CUP Walter Hagen, "The Haig" is excited about the 2004 Ryder Cup and also, that it will take place at Oakland Hills CC. Oakland Hills CC was the site of his first professional golf position after leaving New York. In this show "The Haig" discusses his friendship with the Duke of Windsor, the first U.S.Ryder Cup win on "American soil" and the love he had playing for his country. As many of you know, Hagen captained six of the first Ryder Cup teams. Show duration: 6:16 http://www.michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/hagen/ COUNT DOWN TO THE RYDER CUP- THE WAR YEARS The Ryder Cup closed down until 1947. A good book to read while you are awaiting the next chapters of our saga is, " Bullets, Bombs and Birdies: Golf in the Time of War", By Dale Concannon and available at Clock Tower Press. http://clocktowerpress.com LPGA TIP OF THE WEEK Addressing your posture Because the hands, arms and club are highly visible throughout the swing, they get most of the blame for anything that goes wrong. However, it is important to understand that the hands, arms and club are only responding to what the body is or is not doing. Swing performance can be improved with proper posture at address. This means not only a good starting position posture, but also, more importantly, maintaining the posture throughout the swing motion and throughout the round. In a good setup, the golfer should be bent forward from the hips so that your arms are hanging from your shoulders. Your shoulder blades should be pulled back to open up your chest. This allows your hands to stay relaxed directly under your shoulders. This is easier to do when your lower abdominal muscles are strong, since these muscles support your low back, pelvis and hips. To maintain proper posture remember two things: feel as though your shoulder blades are connected with a rubber band; and bow from the hips with your body weight balanced toward the balls of the feet. You will definitely see an improvement in your swing by improving your posture. This week's tip courtesy of Patty Driapsa, The Club Pelican Bay, Naples, Fla. DAVID PANDEL SAVIC ON COLLEGE FIELD College Field Club and Port Huron Golf Club were very exciting projects for our company, Old Course Design. They made for a great year along with Clovernook (1923 restoration / Langford & Moreau)in Cincinnati and several other projects. We are very proud of our accomplishments in 2003 and we thank the people and state of Michigan for much of this success. On another note, PHGC has been placed on the ballot for rating for The Top 100 Classic Courses in The United States by Golfweek in 2004, and will host The 2004 CAN-AM CUP: 5/17/04 (an event between America/Michigan & Canadian Superintendents). We are very pleased with the results of our work at PHGC (special thanks to John Nowakowski/Super and Doug O'Rourke/Dozer Construction/Golf Course Contractor). FMI http://www.foxhills.com JEFF DANIELS COMEDY GOLF JAM SETS DATE Judy Gallagher, a significant other at Chelsea's Purple Rose Theater, sends this missive along. "The 2004 9th Annual Jeff Daniels Comedy Golf Jam, on May 24th, is off and running.Everyone's excited about this year's theme MI, my MI. The script is already written and will be especially funny this year. We will be showcasing everything from a Motown hole to a Sparty versus Wolverines hole with the Spartan mascot fighting a big wolverine, while cheerleaders from both State and U of M cheer them on. And of course, we will have a Hell (Michigan, of course) Hole. There's 15 other holes with some of our best entertainment ideas yet. Plus a surprise opening act with Jeff." For a view of last year's craziness visit http://michigangolfer.tv/2003shows/show22/index.html NEW PRODUCTS Some new products at the show included a Disappearing Ball Retriever from David Pettinga. The handle of your putter holds a mini ball retriever to allow you to pick up a ball a little easier. Club Stake is a product that allows you to rest your clubs on while around the green. It keeps your grips dry on rainy days. Also there were Swing Stix, a weighted excercise club without a head, that allows you to swing away and not lose any balls or hit any slices ------------------------------------------ADV--------------- **********MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION-THE ARCHIVES***************** Now Appearing in the archives of the Michigan Golfer Television Show 24/7/365 and 24/7/366 http://michigangolfer.tv/archives.html Golf Series-5 shows Caddies of French Lick Howard Hughes and Lana Turner Driving the new gas golf carts in the creek Golf Series-8 shows Walter Hagen and the Ryder Cup His Michigan Legacy The Haig Golf Tournament The Ryder Cup Years Retiring in Cadillac Golf Courses Michaywe Pines, Gaylord, MI Pheasant Run, Canton, MI Quail Chase GC, Louisville, Ky The Bull, Sheboygan, WI The Natural GC at Beaver Creek Resort, Gaylord, MI The Preserve GC, Hartland, MI Timberstone GC, Iron Mountain, MI Wild Bluff GC, Brimley, MI The Golf Architects Charles Scott Steve Forrest Ray Hearn Arthur Hills Harley Hodge Mike Husby Robert Trent Jones W. The only question asked was: "Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?" The survey was a huge failure.... In Africa they didn't know what 'food' meant. In Eastern Europe they didn't know what 'honest' meant. In Western Europe they didn't know what 'shortage' meant. In China they didn't know what 'opinion' meant. In the Middle East they didn't know what 'solution' meant. In Nigeria they didn't know what 'please' meant. In the USA they didn't know what "the rest of the world" meant. TRADITIONAL CAPITALISM: You have two cows. You sell one and buy a bull. Your herd multiplies, and the economy grows. You sell the herd and retire on the income. AN AMERICAN CORPORATION You have two cows. You sell one, and force the other to produce the milk of four cows. You are surprised when the cow drops dead. A FRENCH CORPORATION You have two cows. You go on strike because you want three cows. A JAPANESE CORPORATION You have two cows. You re-design them so they are one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow and produce twenty times the milk. You then create irritating cow cartoon images called Cowkimon and market them world-wide at a fantastic profit. A GERMAN CORPORATION You have two cows. You re-engineer them so they live for 100 years, eat once a month, and milk themselves. AN ENGLISH CORPORATION You have two cows. Both are mad. AN ITALIAN CORPORATION You have two cows, but you don't know where they are. You break for lunch. A RUSSIAN CORPORATION You have two cows. You count them and learn you have five cows. You count them again and learn you have 42 cows. You count them again and learn you have 12 cows. You stop counting cows and open another bottle of vodka. A SWISS CORPORATION You have 5000 cows, none of which belong to you. You charge others for storing them. A HINDU CORPORATION You have two cows. You worship them. A CHINESE CORPORATION You have two cows. You have 300 people milking them. You claim full employment, high bovine productivity, and arrest the newsman who reported the numbers. A WELSH CORPORATION You have two cows. The younger one is rather attractive AN AUSTRALIAN CORPORATION Western suburbs style.... You have 2 stolen bulls but think they are cows You die the first time you try and milk them. AN IRISH CORPORATION Who cares, The EU Really owns them now and the pub is still serving A NEW ZEALAND CORPORATION You have two cows. You don't know what they are used for as they aren't sheep You shag them anyway.
