MGN ON THE ROAD
Novi-Novi Expo Center Another opening of another show. The Michigan Golf Show closed its doors on yet another terrific golf show this past week and will reopen them in March 2006 in an entirely new venue. Show manager, Laurie McCann indicated that the show continues to set attendance records and will increase floor space by another 10% in their new digs next year.

Nick Aune of the Grand Hotel indicated that a few folks have flown in to spend some time at the Grand, since they decided to open in March. Jon Brehm of the Pohlcat http://pohlcat.net , was regaling many at his booth about the feats of his nephew, Ryan Brehm. Ryan, a student at MSU is becoming a legend for the way he crushes a ball. One drive supposedly went 420 yards and was witnessed by Steve Brady, one of Michigan's finest professionals. Brehm, said that they are looking at breaking ground for another course to partner up with The Pohlcat, the Dan Pohl design.

We not only chatted with GM William Shriver Jr. about the awesome Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club on Lake Michigan, we also talked about running the 5/3 River Bank Run and the Ludington Half Marathon. While Arcadia Bluffs might keep him on the run, believe us, he can handle it. http://arcadiabluff.com

Dick Held, of Bavarian Village and late of Boyne, has his PlayerNext concept on the fast track. His America's Golf Team concept has been picked up in a number of states.

Pam Philips, of Black Lake, was touting their Women's only golf school. Bob Koutnik of Fox Run in Grayling was promoting their new Pitch, Putt and Paddle program in a town that has great golf and great rivers.

All the great folks from Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort were on hand to meet and greet all of their customers. Darin Philport, one of golfs great techies, has been doing some great business at their Hidden River Golf Club.

Roger Bliss, of Shanty Creek, was on hand with their contingent of sales folks. They have The Legend, Cedar River, Schuss and the original William Diddel course to choose from, there are not many better foursomes.

Many show goers got their first views of new courses. Dave Mocini of True North, a new Jim Engh course in Harbor Springs, was on hand to chat about the course. Ken Niblock says the third Jerry Matthews nine at Twin Lakes is terrific. Representatives of Forest Dunes, the new Weiskopf course in Roscommon, had a booth and the new Sundance course at A-Ga-Ming was represented by Mike Brown and Larry Laverly. The tariff on True North will be $130 a round, thus joining Bay Harbor, St. Ives/Tullymore, the Pohlcat, Bucks' Run, the Treetops courses, Arcadia Bluffs as courses in the c-note plus price range.

Shawn Kungel was busy telling all about his new Michelob Ultra Golf Tour. Treetops launched their new Masterpiece Residence Club, a new development for those that want a second home on Treetops property. Red Hawk Golf Club brought Arthur Hills to the Baronette Hotel to talk about his work on the project. Other Arthur Hills courses on display included, Stonebridge GC in Ann Arbor, the Thoroughbred near Muskegon, Fox Hills GC in Plymouth and Fieldstone GC in Auburn Hills.

Two Jerry Matthews courses were highlighted at the show, with the debut of DVD's on The Natural in Gaylord and The Majestic at Lake Walden in Hartland. Both of those shows will be on Michigan Golfer Television later this month. Those well repected golf discounters from Dickenson Sawyer were sharing a booth with Ron Cortese and Ed Muir of Huntmore GC, formerly the Golf Club of Michigan. Rick Fabbri, of Lakeview Golf Resort in Lexington indicated that the resort will be using more of their storied history in their marketing. Walter Hagen used to come to the area to fish and helped to design their first course. Jeff Gorney helped to design their more recent holes.

Kevin O'Brien had his full contingent of workers on hand to sell some of their quality merchandize from Tullymore and St. Ives golf courses. Rob Lussenhof of Wild Bluff is readying his crew for the next edition of the Bay Mills Open. Judy Mason was telling all that the well respected Pines GC in Gaylord, has had a total redo from Don Childs and is getting rave reviews. Michaywe has a great twosome with the Pines and the Jerry Matthews course, The Lakes. Mark Hogan and Trisha Chandler of the Otsego Club were doing great business with their wildly successful 54 Hole Blowout package.

Thad Gutowski was working out of the Fieldstone and Devil's Ridge booth. Jim Zeh indicated that their numbers were up last year at the popular Buck's Run in Mt. Pleasant. Peter Allen of Hornung's indicated that he now reps for them in Florida as well. Dave Kaiser, The Gizmo King, had another one at his Fresh Grip booth. This one is a new spout for course water coolers that keeps out contaminents. Brad Dean and Jim MacInnes of Crystal Mountain were on hand to talk up their great golf schools, now part of the Fox Hills product mix. Sandy Mily of Fox Hills was basking over their latest award from the National Golf Course Owners Association.

Scott Landau and Jon Madden were down promoting their Jerry Matthews, Elk Ridge course. Doug Grove, the new Director of Golf at Garland, is fitting nicely into his new role at the popular resort. David Graham and Tonia Branch, of the GAM, continue to expand their tournament offerings and presence in Michigan golf. Ken Kapcia, of Handicomp, is enjoying phenomenal success as the national rep for the firm. Their version 7, soon to be realized, will be a real category killer. They have made tremendous inroads in Iowa this year. Phyllis Barone, of Michigan Golf Guide, has expanded her staff and contines to maintain a strong presence in the Michigan golf market. Mike McGeath has partnered with Art Dils of Golfing in Michigan to promote his travel company.

Tom McGee and members of the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, were on hand to deal hands at their poker themed booth. Their trio of Nicklaus, Player and Newcombe courses are tough to beat. David Graulau was working the Beacon Hill and Greystone booth. Greystone, a Jerry Matthews layout, has three of the finest finishing holes in Michigan golf. Mike Husby of The Loon and Sandra Snook of Pine Cone Accomodations were lauding the merits of Gaylord golf. Although it is a bit self serving, the video we did for The Loon was a hit in the show. Dave Hill has two John Robinson courses to market this year, The Chief and the new Hawk's Eye. Kirk Sherman has the same embarrassment of riches with his new Hawk's Eye and Hawk Hollow courses near Lansing. Kirk says that the Michigan PGA will move into the Hawk's Eye complex in April. Don White of Marsh Ridge was touting his golf school and the great golf on this Mike Husby course. Robert Houtman of Mastodon Golf was promoting their golf learning center in Farmington Hills. Greg Bores, PGA Professional of Canton's Pheasant Ridge, stopped by our booth. The Canton 27- hole Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest layout is drawing lots of golfers. Barry Christopher of The Timbers near Frankenmuth and the International Academy of Golf stopped by to indicate he was back at The Timbers. Ken Petroff, Director of Golf Operations and Tim Sheridan, Superintendent, round out the team. Jim Roland, a principal at Stonebridge Golf Club an Arthur Hills layout, was doing brisk business at his booth.

Craig Peters, representing Lakewood Shores Resort, has three great courses to lure golfers to the Northeast, the Jerry Matthews, Serradella course and two courses from Kevin Aldridge, the highly acclaimed The Gailes and the latest Blackshire.

Ohio was up in force looking to snare some Michigan golf play. Up from Ohio were: Kelly Morrow, Head Golf Professional Eagle Sticks in Zanesville, Don Lawrence of Red Hawk Run, Rondi Niederkohr of Findlay, and Danny Ackerman, Director of Golf for Longaberger. Nevada Golf was in full swing as, representatives from Las Vegas Paiute, Vegas Golf, Casablanca Resort were in attendance.

Robert Warrington, of Ultimate Travel, brought Dave Dukavt from Prince Edward Island to the show. They are celebrating a new route by Northwest Airlines to their province that will open this Spring. PEI has a ton of golf and reasonable pricing. They are excited about the Michigan market and the new route that Northwest Airlines will be flying there this spring.

On the media watch side of things, Dave Richards, Kevin Frisch, Vartan Kupelian, and Phyllis Barone attended the show.

As we headed out to the parking lot, Doug Bell of the Osprey Group of courses, was packing up his U-Haul for one more trip: Chicago this weekend.

Ypsilanti-EMU College of Business and Dave Richards presentation
Dave Richards, CEO of Resort and Golf Marketing, was a guest lecturer in an EMU Sports and Event Marketing class this past week. His company provides public relations, photography and marketing for their clients. They recently won an award for their campaign to market Michigan golf. They did so by identifying international golf and travel writers and then invite them to Michigan. This was done about 18 months before the Ryder Cup, thus enabling writers to not only write about the Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills, but also the other places and courses they visited while here.

MURPHY'S LAWS OF GOLF

Golfers who claim they never cheat also lie.

A two-foot putt counts the same as a two-foot drive.

Never wash your ball on the tee of a water hole.

The only sure way to get a par is to leave a four-foot birdie putt two inches short of the hole.

Don't play with anyone who would question a 7.

If your driver is hot, your putter will be ice cold; if you can hit your irons, you will top your woods; if you are keeping your right elbow tucked in, your head will come up.

It takes 17 holes to really get warmed up.

One birdie is a hot streak.

The odds of hitting a duffed shot increase by the square of the number of people watching.

The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about the golf swing.

It's surprisingly easy to hole a 50-foot putt when you lie 10.

Bets lengthen putts and shorten drives.

It's not a gimme if you're still away.

Always limp with the same leg for the whole round.

The rake is always in the other trap.

The wind is in your face on 16 of the 18 holes.

Nothing straightens out a nasty slice quicker than a sharp dogleg to the right.

Every time a golfer makes a birdie, he must subsequently make two triple bogeys to restore the fundamental equilibrium of the universe.

You can hit a 2-acre fairway 10 percent of the time and a 2 inch branch 90% of the time.

Out of bounds is always on the right, for right handers.

No one with funny head covers ever broke par.

If you seem to be hitting your shots straight on the driving range, it's probably because you're not aiming at anything.

A Tip of the Tam to Terry Galan for this St.Patrick's Day present
