³May the road rise up to meet you,
may the wind be ever at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face
and the rain fall softly on your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.²

IRISH WEEK ON MG TV
The Boynes
The Boynes, Cathal O'Sullivan of Boyne, Ireland and Mike Chumbler of
Boyne, Michigan got together to chat about their respective Boynes. The
two Boynes have much in common with great golf and great fishing being
at the top of the list. Everett Kircher, Boyne pioneer, fished the
Boyne River on one of his many international fishing trips.

MGN ON THE ROAD
Laurie McCann of the Michigan Golf Show had a lot to be happy about as
the show wrapped up Sunday evening. The vendors enjoyed the new venue,
attendance was up, there were no parking problems, the vendors party
was great and their new bar set up was a hit.
Dave Mocini and Mark Walley were telling all show goers about the
beauty of their True North course. Peter Fitzsimmons was once again inviting
all to come to Boyne Country and enjoy the endless golf and endless
summer evenings there. Mark Hogan of the Otsego Club, Judy Mason of
Michaywe, J.T. Ault of Marsh Ridge, Steve Helmer of The Natural were all
working the Gaylord section. Kevin O'Brien and his St. Ives crew were once
again the fashion portion of the show, while Crystal Mountain and Boyne
had and even bigger presence at the show then ever before.
On the media side, Dave Richards, Kevin Frisch of Resort and Golf
Marketing were around visiting their clients, Norm Sinclair, of the Detroit
News was shopping around for new gear, Art Dils of Golfing in Michigan
was pushing his book and Phyllis Barone was passing our scones and
cookies to her clients.
As the folks filed out of the Rock Financial Showcase for their next
golf show, most seemed heartened by the turnout , the balmy weather and
the knowledge that the golf season was now at hand. Listed below are
those booths we felt involved the show goer the most.
TOP 10 BOOTHS AT THE MICHIGAN GOLF SHOW-ALPHABETICAL ORDER
Boyne
Getting a lesson and CD package within their hitting area for $5 seemed
to be hit. Their massive floor display of golf gear and equipment
sprinkled with members of their knowledgeable staff was overwhelming. Brian
O'Neil was heading up the lesson area while Mike Chumbler and his crew
worked the booth.
Crystal Mountain Resort
Their hitting area was full of eager golfers picking up some lessons
from one of Michigan's finest golf schools. Their booth and proshop on
the floor was expansive and enticing. Brad Dean, Rodger Jabara and other
Crystal Mountain Resort folks were putting on hitting lessons, selling
clothes or summer tee times.
Florida
Their beautifully lit dream booth acted as a beacon for many snow
bird golfers.
Grand Traverse Resort
They brought their gaming table to the expo and it attracted a lot of
show goers to their booth area. Tom McGee and his staff were available
to book summer tee times.
Hog Heaven
This booth representing The Majestic, Hawk Hollow, Eagle Eye and The
Grande courses with their Hog Heaven theme was some serious eye candy for
golf show goers. Bill Fountain was heading up the crew
Lakewood Shores Resort
Craig Peters displayed a show stopping rear lit booth with dramatic
photo panels of Blackshire and The Gailes.
Michigan State University
Ken Horvath and his Spartans' crew were attracting people to their
pro shop by featuring a great price come-on: $24.99 or less for
everything. NCAA bound Spartan alums were picking up clothing faster than a Tom
Izzo technical foul. Ken Horvath
Osprey Grille at Manistee National, Medalist, Black Forest and
Ridgeview course booth. Doug Bell brought his chef and theyhey were serving prime rib sandwiches at the booth. If a restaurant is this creative at the Golf Show; we can't wait to try the main event.
Prince Edward Island
The purity of their metallic blue themed exhibit was dazzling. The
P.E.I booth incorporate a wave like look and feel to their booth thus
demonstrating the proximity of the ocean to their island province.
They are excited about having Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson at a charity
tournament this summer.
Thoroughbred and Double JJ
These folks have always had the great western themed costume and look
to their booth. We wondered, can you wear your jeans and cowboy hat on
the course?
Best new feature at the show
A show bar that was really a bar. All we needed was some big screen
tv's to watch the basketball games and it would have been perfect.

KINGSLEY CLUB RANKED 19TH ON GOLFWEEKıS TOP 100
Familiarity breeds praise as far as the five-year-old Kingsley Club in
northern Michigan is concerned. The more it is played and known
nationally, the more it is recognized. Golfweek, the gameıs weekly
newsmagazine, raised The Kingsley Club to 19th place in its March 11 issue.
³Itıs a wonderful ranking and itıs a very special designation,² said Ed
Walker, who co-founded The Kingsley Club on land he discovered
virtually in his own back yard just south of Traverse City."
In addition to the Golfweek ranking, The Kingsley Club drew praise from
LINKS Magazine in its March issue. Jack Purcell, President and
Publisher wrote, ³This heathland style layout in Northern Michigan is nothing
short of phenomenalitıs the closest thing Iıve experienced in America
to an inland Scottish or Irish course.²

MOORE MUSINGS-by Terry Moore
Ford & Golf
As a postscript to my comments last Friday about Ford Motor Co. pulling
out of golf, including Doral (which I was hoping it could save), the
Detroit Free Press this past Monday had a page one story on Fordıs new
marketing strategy. Adopting a new and brawnier image for the company,
Ford will become a sponsor of professional bull riding. Ford is also
linking its image with NASCAR, ³American Idol², and Ironman Competitions.
The Freep quotes Martin Collins, Ford marketing executive, as saying
these moves allow Ford to refocus its true identity around ³strength and
progress.² Art Spinella, an independent market researcher, summed up
Fordıs image move away from golf thusly: ³On the one hand, youıre trying
to be Arnold Palmer, and on the other hand, youıre trying to be a
cowboy.² Research indicates 71% of Ford buyers are men.
World news item a la Jon Stewart
This just in: The Prime Minister of South Korea, Lee Hae-chan, resigned
on Tuesday after being criticized for playing golf rather than
overseeing the governmentıs actions during a railway strike. Even though Lee
was off that day due to a national holiday, he was widely castigated for
not working overtime during the strike. Calling to mind Peter
Dobereinerıs famed anecdote about the sound-proof concentration of Jack Nicklaus
teeing off in Great Britain while a train roared by, I imagine this
conversation at Seoul Country Club:
Aide watching the Prime Minister hit a long drive off the first tee:
³Sir, Iım amazed youıre able to hit the ball so well with the
distractions of a train strike.²
Prime Minister Hae-chan: ³What train strike?²

$1.4-MILLION IN NEW USGA GRANTS AWARDED. TRAVERSE CITY JR. GOLF AWARDED
$20,000
The United States Golf Association (USGA) has awarded 59 new grants
totaling $1,454,220 to non-profit organizations to support affordable and
accessible golf programs and facilities. These new awards will reach
more than 17,000 kids and individuals with disabilities nationally as
part of the USGA's effort to bring golf to audiences that otherwise would
not have the opportunity to learn the game.
Traverse City Junior Golf Association http://www.tcjga.com/ will use
the money to help promote the game of golf through the TCJGA lesson and
on-course tournament programs. It will allow the TCJGA to have more
juniors involved and will help promote new players into the game of golf.

TOP 10 TOUGHEST MICHIGAN COURSES...TO SPELL. EVEN WE SPELLED ONE WRONG
Wequetonsing
Washakie
Blythefield
Dunmaglas
Les Cheneaux
Wawashkamo
Meceola
Idyl Wyld
Alwyn Downs
Iyopawa Island
Art:
IN your last listing refers to the course at Coldwater Lake, it is
spelled with an "I", not a "L"...Iyopawa Island. Also, the 7th edition of
the Michigan Atlas & Gazetter, by Delorme, has Idyl Wyld as two words
and has an "a" between the h & k in Wawashakamo...which way is correct???
Dave Kaiser
Editor's Note:
Dave, you are correct on the Iyopawa. We checked out
Idylwyld Golf Course and found it came on board in Livonia in 1927 and
it listed a couple of ways, but the latest is Idyl Wyld. The Wawashkamo
spelling is correct, or at least it is what their website lists.

SHANTY CREEK RESORT SOLD
The Shanty Creek Resort and Club is being sold to a resort management
firm.
The resort, located 30 miles northeast of Traverse City, offers skiing,
golfing, mountain biking, condominium and conferences facilities. The
new owner will be Trinidad Resort & Club LLC, an investment group from
Missouri.
Comerica Inc. took over Shanty Creek when the previous owners defaulted
in 2004 on a $20.35 million mortgage.
Officials with Comerica and Trinidad signed sales agreement papers
Wednesday, said Jack Garagnani, the resort's chief executive officer. "It's
been a two-year scenario that's culminated in this transaction, and we
feel it's a great day for all concerned," Garagnani told the Traverse
City Record-Eagle.
He would not give details about the sale, saying the transaction still
wasn't final. The parties are expected to appear before a circuit judge
in Antrim County on Tuesday to complete the deal, Shanty Creek
marketing coordinator Lindsey Southwell told The Detroit News.
Comerica and its subsidiary, VRB Corp., have tried to sell the resort
for more than a year. The bank has kept the resort running in the
meantime.
Shanty Creek employs 600 workers, making it the largest employer in
Antrim County.
