MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION SHOW-OUR OWN MARCH MADNESS-IZZO AND MARIUCCI GOLF CLASSIC

Okay, so State lost to Nevada 72-66, it can happen. Obviously, the bad news is that Tom and the Spartans lost. However, the good news is that they can begin practicing on their hand eye coordination for next year, by breaking out their golf clubs.

Tom Izzo and Steve Mariucci have been the best of friends since their high school days in Iron Mountain. Each year they host their Izzo-Mariucci Golf Classic and raise money for their former high school. Thus far, they are half way to a 1.5 million dollar goal of building the school a first rate health club. The tournament is held on the Timberstone GC and Pine Grove CC golf courses. Timberstone is one of a number of terrific courses that Jerry Matthews built. Pine Grove CC just celebrated 100 years of golf by getting a course and facility make over.

After the golf, Tom and Steve take over and the auction begins. A lot of money changes hands in a hurry as both Tom and Steve work the mike and the prizes.

Join our host Bill Shelton and reporters Jennie McCafferty and Susie Fox for this terrific show.

JACOBSEN LEAPS INTO FORD SENIOR PLAYERS ELIGIBILITY POSITION

On the strength of a third-place finish in his Champions Tour debut yesterday, rookie Peter Jacobsen already finds himself within the top 76 on the Ford Senior Players Championship points list. Jacobsen, a first-round co-leader with four others at the SBC Classic, earned $108,000 in his first start to put him 70th on the points list. Gil Morgan, the 1998 winner at the TPC of Michigan in Dearborn, won the SBC title by two shots over Larry Nelson and three over Jacobsen.

The top 76 players from the Ford Senior Players Championship points list are eligible for the Champions Tour major. The list is based on official money won on the Champions Tour from last year's Championship through the event that immediately precedes this year's tournament, the Commerce Bank Long Island Classic.

The popular Oregon native is expected to make two or three more Champions Tour starts prior to the July 5-11 Ford event. He is playing this week's PGA TOUR event, the Bay Hill Classic presented by MasterCard, in Orlando, FL. Tournament host, Arnold Palmer, and Jacobsen are very close friends.

ARNOLD PALMER LAUNCHES TURNING POINT INVITATIONAL AT CC OF DETROIT

He considers the feat so indelible on his persona that Arnold Palmer wrote a book about it, calling his victory in the 1954 United States Amateur, "my turning point in golf."

And now, closing in on the 50th anniversary of Palmer capturing the most prestigious prize in amateur golf, he and 24 of his fellow U.S. Amateur champions are combining to create turning points in the lives of children in urban Detroit with the inaugural Arnold Palmer Turning Point Invitational. The two-day event is scheduled to begin with a gala fundraising dinner Aug. 29, followed by a one-day pro-am Aug. 30 at the Country Club of Detroit - the site of Palmer's come-from-behind, 1-up victory over Robert Sweeny.

Former U.S. Amateur champions who have agreed to participate in the inaugural Arnold Palmer Turning Point Invitational include: Palmer (1954), Harvie Ward (1955, 1956), Gary Cowan (1966, 1971), Bob Dickson (1967), Bruce Fleisher (1968), Steve Melnyk (1969), Lanny Wadkins (1970), Vinnie Giles (1972), Craig Stadler (1973), Fred Ridley (1975), John Fought (1977), John Cook (1978), Mark O'Meara (1979), Nathaniel Crosby (1981), Scott Verplank (1984), Buddy Alexander (1986), Billy Mayfair (1987), Phil Mickelson (1990), Mitch Voges (1991), John Harris (1993), Hank Kuehne (1998), David Gossett (1999), Jeff Quinney (2000), Ricky Barnes (2002) and Nick Flanagan (2003).

"The 1954 U.S. Amateur was a turning point in my life, and I am thrilled that so many other U.S. Amateur champions have agreed to join me in this endeavor to create a turning point in the lives of these children," Palmer said.

"Arnold Palmer's life has been an inspiration for generations," said Clark Durant, founding chair of The Cornerstone Schools, and the co-chairman of the Arnold Palmer Turning Point Invitational. "On behalf of Cornerstone Schools, we are grateful for the tremendous generosity shown by Mr. Palmer and the other 24 past amateur champions who are donating their time to benefit the educational needs of children in Detroit."

"When Clark and I first visited with Arnold at his home in Latrobe (Pa.) to discuss the creation of this event and how to help the Cornerstone Schools, we were both very touched by Arnold's generosity and his desire to help others," said Harold "Red" Polling, former chairman and CEO of the Ford Motor Company, and the other co-chair of the Turning Point Invitational.

The Arnold Palmer Turning Point Invitational will be a two best ball championship with 25 fivesomes, each captained by a past U.S. Amateur champion. One-hundred golfers will have the opportunity to play in his historic tournament with Palmer and the other past amateur champions.

THE RULES OF GOLF IN PLAIN ENGLISH-NEW FROM UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO PRESS

It took a trial lawyer, Jeffrey S. Kuhn and a bestselling author, Bryan A. Garner to tackle the Rules of Golf to make it more reader friendly. "The Rules of Golf in Plain English", just out from the University of Chicago and authored by these two fine gentlemen, have done just that. The Rules of Golf can trace their history to the 338 word 13 Rules of Play that were drawn up at Leith, Scotland. In 1812 the Rules were updated to 541 words. By 2003, a 132 page booklet with 40,000 words was being used by the golfing officials and public. Our authors, have taken 115 pages and certainly thousands of words to "Tell it like it is."

GOLF QUOTE OF THE WEEK-PETER JACOBSEN

"I've had to sing the fight song three times, I had to clean (Ben) Crenshaw's clubs, change J.C. Snead's spikes, and Bruce Lietzke walked behind me, grabbbed my underwear and gave me a wedgie. Other than that, it's been OK."
Peter Jacobsen On his inititation as a Champions Tour member.

Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Brian Kemp for passing this quote along.
