Sponsored by: MGN ON THE ROAD Cadillac- Caberfae Peaks and Valleys When our cameras caught up with them. Tim and Joe Meyer of Caberfae Peaks, were finishing up a great year of skiing and were looking forward to another summer of golf on their course. The resort has changed substantially in the past five years. They have a new building that houses their grill area, pub, and skier lounge. They have also repainted some of their existing building a really given it more of a ski village feeling. It is a great improvement for one of Michigan's oldest ski resorts. Harry Bowers, who designed The Rock, Pierce Lake. Crooked Tree and who has also worked with the likes of Ray Floyd and Curtis Strange, was the architect of the first nine. The timetable for the second nine will depend on the amount of play the first nine gets. The nine holes are demanding from the tips, but the majority of golfers play from the friendlier forward tees. Midland-This was the swan song for long time show host Tom Selleck of WMRX AM and FM. He has moved on to other ventures, but left a nice legacy. This year the show was reduced to one day and it seemed to be a hit with the vendors and attendees alike. Larry Bowden, of The Natural and Don White, of Michaywe, were both pleased at the turnout. The Holiday Inn location was terrific and there was a real warmth to the expo area. It was well lighted and business was booming. *** MICHIGAN GOLFER TV SHOW-KEN DEVINE, CEO, MICHIGAN SECTION PGAKen Devine, CEO of the Michigan Section PGA stopped by our studio to chat about last year's successes and what lies ahead this year for one of the strongest PGA sections in America. Ken is joined by host, Bill Shelton. Join them for a stimulating show. http://michigangolfer.tv *** NEFFER IN THE NEWSJim Neff, MG stringer and host of our Michigan Skier TV Show, is also the Midwest Editor for Ski Magazine. In the March/April issue of the magazine, Jim has a six page spread on the late Everett Kircher. It is a great story and has a sidebar that we ran in last year's MG. For those that would like some additional information on the ski side of Mr. Kircher, you can pull up http://michiganskier.tv and visit a series of five shows that Mr. Kircher participated in before he passed away. Congrats Jim. Terrific piece. *** FORE! HONORS A GOLFER LOYALTY AND REWARDS PROGRAM DEBUTSFore! Honors, a golf loyalty and rewards program is a reality, according to president Pat Damer. "This is the first golf rewards program that offers golfers an incentive to play the most highly acclaimed daily fee facilities more frequently throughout the state," Damer said. Preloaded on each membership card is a two-for-one offer including cart from each member facility. This "instant reward" makes the $79.95 annual membership a great value for even the occasional golfer. Fore! Honors currently lists 15 premiere golf venues throughout Michigan participating in the program. Apple Mountain, Beacon Hill, Boulder Pointe, Bucks Run, Cherry Creek, Gateway, Glacier Club, Greystone, Moose Ridge, St. Ives Golf Club, The Hawk (Partridge Creek), The Orchards, Timber Trace, Twin Lakes and Westwynd @ The Wyndgate Taken and edited from a press release from Bill Arthur http://www.ForeHonors.com *** JOHN BEBOW UPDATE Hello everyone,Things are pretty rough out there in the desert. In the first days of his stay with the marines, John was suffering bad headaches from dehydration. He also discovered that the "light" sleeping bag we bought from the bivouac store wasn't warm enough for the desert nights. He told me last Wednesday that he thought he had that problem "figured out," but as you'll read later from his email, I think his solution was to put on every scrap of clothing he brought with him when he goes to bed (sounds like a "Bebow" solution). He says that the sand and dust is "unbelievable." He shaved off his goatee because - and I quote - "it was holding entirely too much sand!" "There's a reason why these guys (marines) don't have any hair! I might not have any either before this is through." Here are some excerpts from his email that he sent to me yesterday: "I haven't had a dull moment yet. I probably haven't had more than five hours of sleep in one night, either. Daily life just takes up so much time. Sending this email, for example, will require 10 minutes of satellite set up. I do laundry in buckets. I have to take personal inventory of all my equipment daily. The tent needs to be swept. The outhouse is 50 yards away. The showers are 100 yards away on the other side. Extra clothes on at night - and off again first thing in the morning. Where's my watch? Did I lose another pen? How much computer battery do I have left? Do I need to recharge the satellite modem yet? Don't forget to put foot powder in your boots this morning. Ooops, go back to the tent and get your gas mask. Remember to have it with you at all times. Somebody tell me again how I cook these "ready-to-eat" meals! Is the general going to let me in his camp? Did Tarek get the stories I emailed? Do the editors understand that they HAVE to run these stories tomorrow, or they could be obsolete? As John said, things are "heating up." I have no idea of knowing how communication will go once things "start happening." Once again, I ask that you all hold good thoughts and prayers for John's safety and for this situation in its entirety. And again, I thank you all for your interest and your concern. Be well, Monica Bebow *** MICHIGAN HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES NAMEDThe Michigan Golf Hall of Fame's Class of 2003 features a reigning national champion, a nationally-respected golf writer and three women who have set the bar with their contributions to the game on and off the course. The inductees are Greg Reynolds, winner of the 2002 U. S. Senior Amateur championship; former Detroit News golf writer Jack Berry; LPGA member Cindy Figg-Currier; former LPGA player and official Joyce Kazmierski; and Sara Wold, a lifelong official of amateur and women's golf. Bob McMasters, co-chairperson of the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame, announced the results of the vote today. The new members will be inducted May 18 in ceremonies at Indianwood Golf and Country Club in Lake Orion. The ceremony will include a golf outing and dinner. Reynolds has been the Golf Association of Michigan's Player of the Year (1994) and Senior Player of the Year (2002), plus a member of the Honor Roll 15 times. He got into the field of the U. S. Senior Amateur last year as an alternate and went on to win the national title. He has played in five U. S. Amateurs, seven U. S. Mid-Amateurs and a U. S. Senior Open. Berry is a past president of the Golf Writers Association of America and has covered many of the game's greats, including Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. In 1997, Berry was honored with the GAM's distinguished service award. He has written about Michigan golf for more than 40 years. Figg-Currier, a Mt. Pleasant native, has been a member of the LPGA since 1984 and has won $1,738,702 to rank 60th on the career list. She won the State Farm Rail Classic in 1997, defeating Lorie Kane and Kris Tschetter in a playoff. Figg-Currier won the Michigan State high school championship in 1977 and 1978. Wold has been a member of the USGA's Women's Amateur Public Links Committee since 1984. In 1986, she was a founding member of the Michigan Women's Publinx Golf Association. She has served on various GAM committees, including membership, rules, championships and long range planning and has officiated at the U. S. Women's Open. Kazmierski joined the LPGA in 1967. While a touring professional, she served on the LPGA Player Council in 1975 and 1982 and was vice-president in 1983. She was president of the LPGA Tour Division in 1984. A member of Michigan State's Sports Hall of Fame, she was inducted into the National Collegiate Golf Hall of Fame in 1986. When she left the LPGA in 1986, she was among the 50 all-time money winners. Taken from a press release from the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame. *** PEOPLE ON THE MOVEMike Hill, will be the new golf professional at the new Angels Crossing, located in Vicksburg. The Bruce Matthews III designed course will debut this summer. Jack Clark is opening up Black Bear this spring after the club comes out of bankruptcy. The club is now owned by Textron. Black Bear is just off I-75 near Vanderbilt. ***PEOPLE ON THE MEND Jack Saylor continues his recovery from last year's surgery. One of Michigan's great golf writers, Jack indicated that, after a post Florida trip setback, he is again on the mend. Jack indicated that he does not have a date when he will rejoin the Freep. He is just trying to get his health back. Jack has been a friend of the family for years. My father used to hang out with Jack and mutual friend Harold Horn. They used to hold some great "meetings" at the Airport Bar. Jack was one of the first writers I talked to when we were thinking of coming out with the Michigan Golfer Magazine. He was very supportive then and we certainly have enjoyed his contributions to our publication over the years. We hope to see him on the tee in the near future. Many have tried to get a video tape of Jack's swing, so that it could be shown continuously in the United States Golf Instruction Hall of Fame. Even the great Peter Jacobsen can not duplicate Jack's swing. Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Dave Richards for giving us the update. ***ANN ARBOR FUTURES GOLF CLASSIC SETS DATE Gilda Johnnson has announced that the new dates for the Ann Arbor FURTUREs Golf Classic are June 18-22. *** INDEPENDENT INSURANCE AGENT JUNIOR CLASSIC SETS DATEThis year's IIAJC will be held at the Fortress GC in Frankenmuth. The goal is to provide programs and playing opportunities that entice occasional golfers to play more frequently. Through its more than 27,000 men and women PGA Professionals and with the support of a host of allied golf associations and GOLF 20/20, The PGA of America is leading an industry-wide effort designed to grow the game of golf. At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon". In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics: 1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day. 2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car. 3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this. 4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine. 5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, be reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads. 6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light. 7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying. 8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna. 9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car. *** GOLF CALENDAR May 05/06 Fuller Cup-Prestwick Village Golf Club, Highland 05/20-23 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships, Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex (Purdue University) in West Lafayette, Indiana June 06/02-03 Taylor Made/adidas State Pro-Am- Boyne Highlands Resort 06/10-11 Club Car Michigan Senior Open- Bedford Valley 06/16-22 Farmers Charity Classic, Egypt Valley GC, Ada 06/17-21 Michigan Amateur Championship, Belvedere GC, Charlevoix 06/18-24 Ann Arbor FUTURES Golf Classic, Lake Forest GC- Ann Arbor, MI 06/20 Vintage Club Golf Classic-Elmbrook GC, Traverse City 06/23-26 Detroit Newspapers Michigan Open-The Bear at Grand Traverse Resort 06/30-07/02 Michigan Girls Championship 06/30-07/01 ESPN Par 3 Shootout-Treetops Resort 06/30-07/03 Great Lakes Junior Masters Golf Championship, Stonebridge, Ann Arbor July 07/07-08 Shanty Creek Classic, Bellaire 07/07 Father and Son Championship, Paint Creek, Lake Orion 07/13-14 2003 Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic, Fortress GC, Frankenmuth, MI 07/14-16 Fifth Third Bank Michigan Women's Open Tournament presented by Detroit Newspapers-Crystal Mountain Resort 07/14-15 GAM Women's Mid Amateur Championship, Glacier Club, Washington 07/08-14 Ford Senior Players Championship, TPC of Michigan, Dearborn 07/21/23 Detroit Newspapers Tournament of Champions-Boyne Mountain Resort 07/28-31 Michigan Junior Boys Championship, Battle Creek CC, Battle Creek 07/28-29 Michigan Senior PGA Championship,The Loon, Gaylord 07/28-08/03 Buick Open, Warwick Hills GC-Flint August 08/11-13 GAM Championship, Grand Haven GC, Grand Haven 08/18-20 Michigan PGA Championship-Shanty Creek Resort, Bellaire 08/18-19 GAM Women's Championship, Clio CC, Clio 08/18-24 Bay Mills Open, Brimley-Wild Bluff GC 08/25-26 GAM Women's Senior Amateur Championship, Crystal Mountain,Thompsonville 08/28-29 GAM Men's Mid-Amateur Championship, Treetops, Gaylord September 09/08-11 Lincoln Mercury Classic-Pine Lake CC 09/03-04 GAM Men's Senior Amateur Championship, Lakewood Shores Resort, Oscoda 09/13-14 Michigan Net Amateur Championship, Pilgrim's Run 09/20-21 Atlas Matches, The Loon, Gaylord 09/30 Tournament of Club Champions (Men and Women) Egypt Valley, Ada October 10/19-21 The GOLF 20/20 Conference, World Golf Village, Florida http://golf2020.com
