Tom Izzo is going after another NCAA Championship this weekend and we wish him well. The new spokesperson for The Chief and Hawk's Eye golf courses and real estate development, has a great golf tournament in the UP. Paired with his high school buddy, Steve Mariucci, the two have a great time in this fundraiser for their high school each year. Jennie McCafferty and Suzie Fox provide the commentary.

2005 MASTERS PLAYERS POOL-by Terry Moore
Alert: This column has been suspended due to inclement weather. Writing will resume at 7 am tomorrow morning, weather permitting.

Okay, I'm back. Being April 1st, I just had to engage in some tomfoolery after watching the PGA TOUR, a.k.a. The Weather Channel, these last few weeks. Plus I must relax and concentrate all of my mental powers on one of the most grueling tasks of the year: determining one's Masters picks for the annual "player pool." You see, each year some of my compatriots engage in a friendly wager, using offshore collected bottle caps and match sticks, on identifying the best aggregate team score of six drafted players. In an exclusive feature for Michigan Golf News, I'll going to share some tips and some foolhardy insights for winning the fiercely contested Masters player pool:

The Big Five: It's so basic but it must be said: don't outsmart yourself. Stick to the tried and true and be sure to draft one of these superstars in the first round: Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh and Retief Goosen.

Good putters: Avoiding three-putts at Augusta National is vital, so keep in mind experienced and proven players with the flat stick: Stewart Cink, Jim Furyk, David Toms, Miguel Angel Jimenez, and the incomparable but driver-challenged Jose Maria Olazabal who won two Masters titles without three-putting once.

Playing well going into Augusta: Consider such players as Luke Donald, Tim Herron, Darren Clarke, and Lee Westwood, all of whom are playing strong steady golf. But remember: after you pick them, fully expect their hot play to end abruptly with a Missed Cut.

Use offbeat criteria: Throw the Masters stats guide out the window and instead make picks by non-traditional, instinctual methods. For example, my lovely and golf-savvy wife won the Masters pool in 1997 by including eventual third place finisher Tommy Tolles as one her late round draft picks. Asked why she included the long shot Tolles on her list, she replied: "I liked the sound of his name."

Don't pick the par-three winner: Sure it's a superstition of sorts (like walking underneath a ladder with a live hand grenade) but no player has won the Masters and the par-three tournament in the same year. So please be my guest, pick Charles Coody or better yet Padraig Harrington who's won or shared the last two par-three titles.

Do pick guys who make cuts: Fred Couples has made 20 consecutive cuts at the Masters, the most of any active player. The always underestimated Bernhard Langer, who finished tied for 4th last year, has made 20 out of 22 cuts. Jay Haas has made the cut 18 out of 21 events.

Avoid players prone to making a high score (i.e. Ocean's Twelve) : The guy has a errant yet innocent heart of gold but if John Daly goes down into Rae's Creek to play a shot out of the rocks like he did at the 72nd hole at Bay Hill, he'll become a new cast member on that CBS-TV series: Numb3rs.

Sleeper pick: Foregoing Rip Van Winkle, Woody Allen (think about it), and last week's winner Fred Funk (who took a nap at home between weather delays), I would pick K.J. Choi who dramatically holed out for an eagle deuce in the final round at the 11th hole last year and finished third overall.

Use distracting chatter: While your competitor is weighing his next draft pick, distract him by incessantly calling out: "You're on the clock‹we must have your pick! You're on the clock‹we must have your pick!" Be alert, however, for sharp flying obstacles aimed at one's head.

Employ a gotcha trivia trap: Extend a winning bonus (case of bottle caps and skid of match sticks) for anyone picking all of the 2005 Masters invitees whose last name ends with III. Some fool will rush in, rashly take the bet and then realize that besides Davis Love III and Charles Howell III there's also the USGA Mid- Amateur champion and first-time competitor in the field by the name of Austin Eaton III.

Heed the words of Bobby Jones: If a pool contestant makes a stupid pick (such as selecting a non-competing honorary invitee) that would normally draw a jeer and a jest, remember these words of Mr. Jones, President in Perpetuity of Augusta National GC: "Most distressing to those who love the game of golf is the applauding or cheering of misplays or misfortunes of a player."

*** AUGUSTA NATIONAL, WHOSE GOLF COURSE IS THIS ANYWAY?
Ann Arbor's Sports Media Group, has readied a new book for the Masters crowd, "Alister MacKenzie Masterpiece: The Augusta National Golf Club. For those that really get into golf course architecture, it is an important read. While the golf world heralds the work of Alister MacKenzie, he might find Augusta National, a tad changed from his original layout. The book highlights the following changes to the course.
1931-Alister MacKenzie lays course out
1932-Clifford Roberts changed ninth fairway
1937-Perry Maxwell redesigned a new seventh green and elevated the tenth green
1947-Bobby Jones/Robert Trent Jones redesigned the sixteenth hole
1950-Robert Trent Jones created a new tee box for the eleventh hole
1956-George W. Cobb redesigned the eight green
1957-Ben Hogan suggested changes to the right side of the fifteenth green
1979-Joe Finger, reconstructed the eighth green to original MacKenzie specifications
1979-Byron Nelson oversaw reconstruction of mounding on the eighth green
1998-Tom Fazio performed alterations to holes 2, 11, 15 and 17
2002-Tom Fazio performed major renovation to nine hole prior to Masters

The book was written by Stan Byrdy and William Lanier supplied the drawings.

GREYWALLS GC TO OPEN JUNE 16
The Greywalls Golf Course, located in Marquette, will open on June 16,
2005. The Greywalls course is part of the Marquette Golf Club, which
has been a traditional venue for golf in that part of the U.P. since
its establishment in 1926. Greywalls will join the Heritage course and
give the popular club 36 holes of fun and challenging golf. The course
is already being favorably considered in the same category as the top
golf courses in northern Lower Michigan as well as the entire Midwest.

"The Upper Peninsula has always been a great tourist attraction for its
natural wonders. Greywalls has already been tagged a 'natural wonder' by
the media because it embodies many of the same traits that this region
possesses," explains Marc Gilmore, head golf professional at Greywalls.
"Greywalls epitomizes our geographical region and will become something
all Upper Peninsula residents will be proud of."

Greywalls was created by Mike DeVries, who has designed such award-winning
Michigan layouts as the Kingsley Club near Traverse City and Pilgrims
Run near Grand Rapids. The Greywalls design is already receiving
accolades similar to those of the Kingsley Club, which has developed
a strong national following. DeVries Design, Inc., is based in Traverse City.
