This week, the American Express Company launched a new ITV series starring Jerry Seinfeld and Superman. This is the first, of a scheduled number of webisodes, and can be found at http://jerry.Americanexpress.com This webisode is entitled "A Uniform Used to Mean Something"
It is the latest in an interesting trend, where companies elect to put up quality video content on the web and alert viewers as to where to find it.
In late September of 2001, the BMW Company began to place some high quality video on the Internet. The site archived five 7-8 minute "films" that featured name directors, great acting and wondrous BMW car action scenes. They were varied in theme. Once you saw the first one, you wanted to watch all of them. One episode. "The Star" featured Michigan's own Madonna. It is a terrific comedy and was directed by her husband Guy Richie. The site http://bmwfilms.com has a friendly interface for its viewers.
In 2003, Reebok brought Terrible Terry Tate to the Super Bowl television audience and sent millions to their site to download the Terrible One. It was one of the great advertisement successes of that year. http://www.terrytate.reebok.com/
As far as we know, the first golf Internet television show, "The Michigan Golfer Television Show", began on March 9th, 2001. The show was introduced that day on WJR's Internet Advisor Show. The show featured host, Bill Shelton, Travel Michigan representative, Dana Lee Cole and GLSP CIO Jennie McCafferty. http://www.michigangolfer.tv/2001shows/show7/index.html .

The "Sip and Chip" show rolled into town this week. Nick Nerbonne from The Homestead, Tony and Joan Ciccone from Ciccone Vineyard and Winery and Charles Edson, of Bela Lago Vineyards were working the Ann Arbor area. Others from the Leelanau Peninsula Vintner Association were different locations in Southeast Michigan. Sip and Chip is becoming a great trend for golf is the uniting of golf courses and vineyards as a marketing tool. The vintners from the Leelanau Peninsula stopped by to visit our studios this week to tell us about their "Sip and Chip" program. MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION-RICK SMITH AND THE BIG BREAK
The Golf Channel launched "The Big Break" this past fall, and it was a hit. Join our reporters, Vanessa Bell and Brian Manning, as they interview "The Big Break" host Rick Smith and 2nd place winner, Rochester Hills' Anthony Sorentino. Golf Channel regular, Smith was excited about the visibility the program brought to Treetops Resort.
Anthony Sorentino, interviewed while being a guest of Eastern Michigan University's Sports Marketing class, told the group that he was not into the gimmick golf that he had to play. However, he was thankful for the opportunities that the reality show has given him. He hopes to play in a few Canadian Tour events this year, one in Sacramento and our own Bay Mills Open.

THE TOM IZZO AND STEVER MARIUCCI GOLF CLASSIC
Tom Izzo and Steve Mariucci have been the best of friends since their high school days in Iron Mountain. Each year they host their Izzo-Mariucci Golf Classic and raise money for their former high school. Thus far, they are half way to a 1.5 million dollar goal of building the school a first rate health club. The tournament is held on the Timberstone GC and Pine Grove CC golf courses. Timberstone is one of a number of terrific courses that Jerry Matthews built. Pine Grove CC just celebrated 100 years of golf by getting a course and facility make over.
After the golf, Tom and Steve take over and the auction begins. A lot of money changes hands in a hurry as both Tom and Steve work the mike and the prizes.

GOLF SHOW DATES FOR 2005
Todd Smith, Laurie McCann, et.al, indicated that the Michigan Golf Show will be held March 11-13, 2005, with the Lansing Show, being moved up to February 25-27. The Michigan Show was a huge success with a 12% increase.
GOLF COURSE OPENINGS CONTINUE DOWNWARD TREND
Golf course construction continued to trend downward, according to the latest statistics from the National Golf Foundation (NGF). The Foundation reported 171 golf course openings (in 18-hole equivalents) in 2003, continuing a downward trend since the peak year of 2000. Nearly 400 courses opened in 2000, followed by 284 in 2001 and 220 in 2002.
The majority of new courses that opened in 2003 (73%) were new as opposed to expansions; 74% are open to the public. A number of courses were identified as having closed (either in 2003 or earlier). Therefore, the net of new courses is 102 Ð 14,827 courses at year-end 2003 minus 14,725 at year-end 2002 Ð or an additional 0.7% of total course supply. Closures increased in 2002 and 2003 in the wake of the poor economy and slumping rounds played. Still, closures only represent 0.3% of total supply.

2004 CAN-AM CUP
Hey Art,
You need to add to your date of events our May 17th, 2004 CAN-AM CUP. It will be played at Port Huron Golf Club. The event is sponsored by the Detroit Chapter of GCSAA and the local Canadian chapter of the GCSAA. The event is a good will competition of some 120 superintendents from the US and Canada.

FUZZY ZOELLER TO DEFEND AT TYLENOL PAR-3 SHOOTOUTJUNE 28-29
Fuzzy Zoeller will return to Treetops Resort to defend his Tylenol Par-3 Shootout title against the same cast from last year - Fred Couples, Phil Mickelson and Lee Trevino. The four will play at the highly-acclaimed Par-3 Threetops Course at Treetops Resort, June 28 - 29.
The purse for the 18-hole tournament is $540,000 and an additional $1 million bonus is available for every hole-in-one. (Trevino won the $1 million bonus in 2001 when he aced the 138-yard 7th hole). Each hole is worth $20,000, with a $10,000 bonus for the player hitting his shot closest to the pin. If the hole is not won, the money carries over to the next hole. If the hole is won, the player doesn't get the money unless he validates it on the next hole by either winning or tying the low score. No validation is necessary on playoff holes.
Tickets, priced at $50 for the two days, or $30 for each day, will go on sale April 1 and may be purchased online at http://www.treetops.com or by calling (989) 732-6711, ext. 2499.

THE PGA GOLF EXHIBITION ANNOUNCES ITS NUMBERS AND 2005 DATES-JAN 27-30
PGA Golf Exhibitions announced attendance figures of 44,679 attendees at the 2004 PGA Merchandise Show, an increase of 2.5% over the 2003 Show attendance figures of 42,809.
Industry professionals from all 50 states and 78 countries converged at the annual industry gathering. The top five states by attendance were Florida, California, New York, Georgia and Illinois. The top five countries (following the U.S.) by attendance were Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.

ADAM SCOTT INTERVIEW-THE WIRE
Editor's note: On Sunday, Adam Scott, 23, became the youngest player ever to win The Players Championship. Afterward, Scott met with the media at TPC at Sawgrass. Following are excerpts from the interview session.
PGA TOUR MEDIA REPRESENTATIVE JOEL SCHUCHMANN: We'd like to welcome the winner of the 2004 PLAYERS Championship, Adam Scott. Adam, congratulations on an incredible week. It came down to the wire, and you had problems on 18, but you came through with a clutch putt from ten feet. First and foremost, if we could start with comments on that hole. Congratulations, first and foremost.
ADAM SCOTT: Yeah, well, going from in the middle of the fairway cruising, thinking on the green and two putts for the easy win, to hitting one quickly into the water, and having a chip and a putt to save it or you're going down to the last again or not at all, in fact, it's a roller coaster of emotion. I hit such a good chip, by my standards, anyway. And once I knew the putt was pretty straight up there, I felt really confident I could make it. I just didn't let myself think about anything else then but making the putt.
I thought of other times, I thought of actually the Match Play tournament, where I went extra holes with Robert Allenby, and he kept making putts in front of me to win the match in extra holes and I made them back on top of him, and that's what I thought over that putt.
Q.: Give us the detail on the little tutorial you got from Greg Norman on Wednesday].
ADAM SCOTT: Turns out I hit three unbelievable chips the last four holes. That's nice, thanks. Now you can listen to this. But, you know, the last three -- three of the last four holes I had some tough chips, and I hit really good chips on all of them. I missed the putt on 16, but I was still in good shape with a couple to go. It was really -- he really changed my technique. I was a lot inside with my chipping. My clubhead was traveling inside going back, and it shuts the club face down, no loft on the club, then you have to do it all with your hands when you get back to the ball. He got me keeping the loft on the club, and letting my hands through. I was dragging the left hand through it. And I quieted everything down, got me covering the ball a lot better, and hit more aggressive chips.
Q.: Adam, could you tell us what happened with the swing on the last? What was going through your mind as you walked to the drop area? Have you ever had a situation where you had something, let it get away and were able to bring it back like that?
ADAM SCOTT: Yeah, I didn't hit great shots coming in to be honest with you. From 14 on in, it was a bit of a struggle. I didn't hit a very good drive on 14 and 15. I hit a bad shot into 16. I kept it left to avoid the water right. And 17 was nice, I got a good swing off there. 18, you know, I was safe up the right. It was 182, I think, to the front and 213 to the pin downwind. And I just felt like if I could trap a 6-iron, I could pitch it maybe 200 yards, or just under 200, 195 or something, and get it past that first dip in the green. I tried to hit it a little low, and when I came through, I knew straight away, I chased with my hands, flipped my hands over, and it was always going left. There was no chance that ball was going over the water.
Q.: What was going through your mind as you headed to the drop area?
ADAM SCOTT: It was -- I just told myself it was a chip and a putt. I told my caddy, Alistair, it was a chip and a putt and we're done. And it was nice, I got two club lengths back into the fairway, so I could hit a nice spinning pitch. I hit a pretty good shot. I was nervous, because I was going with this new technique (laughter). But that's what it's all about. So I hit a good pitch. It didn't skip as hard on the first bounce, but it got on the same level as the pin, and I was pretty happy with myself.
Q.: Greg Norman said even before you won the tournament that he was proud of you as an Australian and proud of you as a golfer, and he predicted you were going to be the next superstar of golf. A, how does that make you feel that he said that, and B, given that he said that you have a chance to win a Masters, what are your expectations now?
ADAM SCOTT: Well, it makes me feel good to hear that. You know, it's nice that Greg has helped me along the way, and partly because of that I think he's made me into who I am, and he showed me when I was a kid watching him on TV how to carry yourself out here on the golf course. He did a great job of that, and he was a great role model for every kid in Australia. Augusta is a different ballgame again, and it's a couple of weeks away. I've still got this week to worry about. As I said before, I'm just looking to keep in a rhythm and I can go there with a lot of confidence now. I don't have anything to lose, and I've only got to gain in Augusta.
