__/ BEBOW'S BACK John Bebow, minus 17 pounds, lots of hair and a sporting a stiff shoulder from his rollover accident is back in Ypsilanti. The locals will be holding a party for John's return this Saturday. (John, a reporter for the Detroit News and a stringer for MG, was one of the reporters embedded in a unit in Gulf War II.)

*** MGN ON THE ROAD Dearborn - The Michigan Association of Convention and Visitor Bureaus, held its annual education meeting at the elegant Dearborn Inn this week and many of the executive directors were cautiously holding their breath for the upcoming golf season. Barb Barden, of Livingston County, indicated that her board is backing off some of their golf promotion dollars due to the downturn in the sport. On the other hand, Paul Beachnau of Gaylord, indicated that they had some growth last year, and feels that some of the early energy of the Gaylord Golf Mecca is coming back. Peter Fitzsimons of Boyne Country was a little tentative on his outlook, but hopes for the best.

*** __/ MICHIGAN GOLFER TV-"THE HAIG" RETURNS The Michigan Golfer TV Show introduces "The Haig" this week. "The Haig", Walter Hagen, will be joining host Bill Shelton from time to time to comment on his extraordinary career, his years in Michigan and the upcoming Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills where he served as the first golf professional. In this week's show, Bill and "The Haig" chat about his love of nice cars, especially Cadillacs, his mode of dress, the famous double eagle of Sarazen at the Masters and his storied match with Bobby Jones.

*** SARNIA'S MIKE WEIR AND THE WEARING OF THE GREEN Phil Winch, Convention and Visitor Bureau of Sarnia-Lambton, is quick to share the news of Canadian accomplishments with his friends in the states. If the Red Wings get beat by a Canadian team, we are sure to hear about it. Two years ago, he was able to bring out attention to a 58 that was shot during the Bayer Championship in Sarnia. This morning his email went out to herald Mike Weir's stunning victory at the Masters. We are happy for you Phil.

*** STADLER TO MAKE CHAMPIONS TOUR DEBUT AT EGYPT VALLEY Craig Stadler has committed to play in the Farmers Charity Classic, June 16-22, 2003 at Egypt Valley Country Club.

Stadler, winner of the 1982 Masters Tournament, 11 PGA TOUR tournaments and five international tournaments during his golfing career, will be making his official PGA Champions Tour debut at the Farmers Charity Classic.

"There is no question that he was at the top of our list of sought-after players," said Lance Hartman, Executive Director of the Farmers Charity Classic. "You can imagine his expectations are high and he will want to win, right away, on the Champions Tour. Craig embodies what the Champions Tour is all about: personality, star power and playing ability that reflect his talents, not his age."

*** MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION SHOW TO COVER LAST ROUND OF THE WESTERN AMATEUR Final day coverage of the 101st annual Western Amateur Championship at Point O'Woods will be shown on Michigan Golfer TV. Gary Holaway, Communications Director of the Western Golf Association, will provide the on air talent.

The 101st Western Amateur will be played July 28-August 3 at Point O Woods Golf & C.C. in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Point O'Woods has hosted the championship annually since 1971. The Western Amateur, first held in 1899, traditionally features an international field of top-ranked amateur golfers in a grueling medal and match play format. The champion will earn an exemption into the 2004 Western Open. The 2002 Western Amateur field included competitors from more than 30 states and five foreign countries. Past champions include Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ben Crenshaw, Curtis Strange, Hal Sutton, Lanny Wadkins and Justin Leonard.

*** SIZE DOES MATTER "The average size of the driver used by professionals at the Buick Invitational has increased to 352 cubic centimeters, from 267 just three years ago. The USGA, the governing body for rules and equipment, has increased the maximum allowable size to 470 cubic centimeters from 385 in just 14 months." Jeff Gerth in April 13, New York Times

*** GULL LAKE IS CELEBRATING THEIR 40TH Gull Lake View is celebrating its 40th year in the golf business. In 1963 the front nine on Gull Lake View West opened to the public. Developer and operator Darl Scott pride fully pointed out to Jack Moss of the Kalamazoo Gazette "We'll offer public fee play in a country club atmosphere." Green Fees were $1.50 for 9 holes and $2.50 for 18 holes. In celebration of this exceptional accomplishment we will be hosting a Fortieth Fourth of July Scramble on Gull Lake View. *** U.S. AMATEUR RETURNS TO PINEHURST Pinehurst reinforced its strong amateur golf roots today, as the United States Golf Association announced the return of the U.S. Men's Amateur Championship to the resort in 2007.

David Fay, executive director of the USGA, made the declaration at an afternoon media conference near Pinehurst's No. 2 course, where the championship's final rounds will be played.

The event propels Pinehurst's 103-year old heritage in amateur golf into the 21st century, a tradition that began with the North and South Amateur Championship's opening round at the resort in 1901. It thrived under the direction of past Pinehurst and USGA president Richard Tufts, grandson to the resort's founder, who welcomed the best in amateur golf to Pinehurst during his tenure.

Tufts "Creed of the Amateur" is etched in bronze just off No. 2's 18th green, where many of golf's greatest moments have been immortalized. That legacy and dedication to the amateur experience brought the 1962 Amateur Championship to Pinehurst, and continues through today's announcement.

"We are pleased to have been selected as the site of one of the greatest championships in all of golf," said Patrick Corso, President and CEO of Pinehurst. "The principles of amateur golf are at the very core of Pinehurst values, and the heart of our mission to continually deliver a timeless experience to all golfers."
