MGN ON THE ROAD
Acme
Mike DeAgostino, Public Relations Manager of the Grand Traverse Resort,
indicated that the pool area has been upgraded, a new phone system has
been installed, the hotel is wireless and that the golf courses are doing
some terrific April business and are ready for a great summer.
Grayling and Kalkaska
Grayling's theme this year is Golf and Canoe Adventures. On the golf side,
the group consists of the Graying Country Club, Fox Run, Twin Birch and
Grandview. We stopped by to chat with owner Mark Hill at Twin Birches and he
indicated that they created six new tee areas last year, thus adding another
couple hundred yards. Their slope rating increased from 117 to 127 on this
6300 yard course. Paula Ryan, GM of Grandview, and her crew are looking to
increase their rounds for the year. One only has to look out the back door
of the clubhouse to see the inspiration for their name.
Traverse City
Amy Parker, GM, Bill Knopp, Director of Sales and the entire Park Place Hotel
are gearing up for their Diamond Jubilee Celebration in May. Parker
indicated that they have spent over a million dollars in room upgrades
for this venerable property. The rooms and furnishing are indeed spectacular.
The Park Place Hotel has some great stay and play packages for the TC area.

Williamsburg
Ben Croftchik, GM of High Pointe GC, indicated that they are coming off
a good year and that the early spring has been great for golf. He also
indicated that they are moving into the entertainment area with their
Savoy Swings in the summer. High Pointe was the setting for "An Evening
With Tom Doak", the designer of the course and now recognized as a world
class golf course designer. Michigan Golfer Television will be showing
those festivities a little later this year.
Ypsilanti-Washtenaw C.C.
I live by one of Michigan's century old golf courses, Washtenaw CC.
My son got his first golf lesson from Randy Ersksine and my daughter got
her first job there. The course has been a steady influence and great
neighbor during the 25 years I have lived near it. I have been watching
the change of seasons for decades as I go for my running workouts.
It is my Dorian Grey, as superintendent John Durant keeps the course
forever young, while I continue my own journey toward the century mark.

2005 BAY MILLS OPEN PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP-A PREVIEW
The new Director of the Bay Mills Open is Rob Lussenhof. Rob became
the Director of Golf at Wild Bluff in 2004 and now takes over the helm
from its prior directors, Mike Husby and Judy Mason. In our show our
reporter, Jennie McCafferty, chats with Rob about some of the changes this year.
SNEAK PREVIEW OF BOYNE'S GRAND MOUNTAIN HOTEL AND AVALANCHE BAY-A PREVIEW
Jim Neff stops by Boyne and gets the latest update on the soon to open
Mountain Grand Lodge and Avalanche Bay. Jim put on his hard hat and joined
Boyne representative Julie Ard as they toured the new facility. The project
represents the planning of both Steve and the late Everett Kircher. The
Memorial Day opening of Avalanche Bay is going to kick off the Michigan
tourist season with a big splash.

"Saving Par: How to Play the 40 Toughest Shots in Golf
by Todd Sones with John Monteleone
I thought every golf shot was tough, but according to Todd Sones, there are
really only 40 such shots. Sones does a nice job at categorizing these shots
and giving the golfer an explanation as to how to pull them off. Do you know
how to fade, draw, hit a knockdown shot, hit a ball below your feet, above
your feet, hit a ball uphill, hit a ball downhill or pitch from a tight lie
to a tucked pin? Well Sones does and he shares this and 30 plus other tough
shots with the reader.

"P is for Putt: A Golf Alphabet"
by Brad Herzog and Illustrated by Bruce Langton
"Grab a glove and grip a club, Golf with letter G. Give a great big hand
to the grinning gallery.", and so goes the alphabet in Brad Herzog's "P
is for Putt: A Golf Alphabet" book. This is a great little read to give
to a young child that has shown interest in the game. There are others
in the series like "Z is for Zamboni," and "H is for Home Run". They all
seem to do a nice job in introducing sports to the next generation.
