MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION-DOUBLE FEATURE "CELEBRATE RYDER CUP 2004" Tim Hygh chats with Kevin Frisch of Resort and Golf Marketing Services, about the effort that Michigan is putting forth to leverage the publicity that the state is getting from hosting the Ryder Cup. Both Tim and Kevin attended the last Ryder Cup held at the Belfry and offer their observations. In a companion story this week, we feature Ireland, and their upcoming hosting of the 2006 Ryder Cup. The Irish are experiencing a tremendous growth in golf rounds in their country. In 1998, 58,000 rounds were played by Americans. Last year, the figure was 250K and they expect 450,000 rounds during the Ryder Cup year of 2006. "IRELAND: SITE OF THE NEXT RYDER CUP" Damien Ryan, Director of Golf Programming for "Tourism Ireland", chats with reporter Vanessa Bell concerning their hosting of the 2006 Ryder Cup at The Kildare Hotel & Straffan. Damien indicated that in 1998 when they secured the Ryder Cup. Ireland did 58,000 rounds and last year they did 250,000. In 2006 they are projecting 450,000 rounds played for an economic impact of 230 million Euros. He also chats about planning for the "Irish Night" at Henry Ford Museum while here. Susy Avery, of Henry Ford Museum and formerly, VP of Travel Michigan, will host the evening of merriment. http://michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/show7/index.html ANGELS CROSSING GOLF CLUB Bruce Matthews, passed on to us this terrific article about his latest project in Vicksburg, Angels Crossing. Larry Aylward of Golfdom has written a fine article on the course and the role it will play in the future of the town. Vicksbury lost its biggest industry a few years ago, and the new golf project is one of a number of ideas that are being actualized to help create a new tax base for the town. Article: http://www.golfdom.com/golfdom/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=89782 Course Web site: http://golfangelscrossing.com There is also a nice article about the new superintendent, Roger Barton. Enjoy the read. http://www.golfdom.com/golfdom/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=89779 GARLAND INTRODUCES LONG-BALL CLINCS Garland, the Midwest's only AAA Four Diamond resort, will offer a new golf program called "Garland's Ultimate Distance Clinic." These packages, which feature National Long Drive Competitor Dave "The Magnum" Willard, will teach golfers the art of increasing distance. The clinic will also include a Long Drive Challenge so that students can track their before and after distance averages. Package prices start at $379 per person and include the one night of lodging, 18 holes of golf, lunch, dinner and the one-day clinic. TREVINO HEADS STRONG FIELD AT FARMERS CHARITY CLASSIC Lee Trevino, arguably one of golf's favorite ambassadors, has committed to play in this year's Farmers Charity Classic played at Egypt Valley Country Club in Ada, May 31 through June 6. Known for his ongoing banter with competitors and gallery members alike, Trevino, with his 29 Champions Tour Victories and 29 PGA Tour victories, is a Grand Rapids favorite. In addition to Trevino, J.C. Snead will return to Ada, as will Bruce Fleisher. Snead, with 8 PGA Tour victories and 4 Champions Tour victories and Fleisher, with 16 Champions Tour victories since 1999, will provide stiff competition for Trevino and the other 78 golfers competing throughout the week. Taken and edited from a Farmers Classic PR release GOLF ROUNDS ON THE RISE According to data from golf facilities from around the country, rounds were up 5.3% nationwide for the first quarter 2004. Traditionally, the first quarter only accounts for about 15% of total annual rounds, but after two years of declines due to the weak economy, a shaky employment picture, worldwide unrest and poor weather, recent gains are welcome. Regionally, the Northeast and Mid Atlantic posted strong gains in the first quarter, partly due to having more play days -- 10 more days on average in the Northeast and four more in the Mid Atlantic. The Mountain region, which had the sharpest percentage decrease for the quarter (-5.0%), also had significantly fewer play days -- an average of 10 fewer days open in the region. Beyond a consideration of weather, there is evidence that rounds increased due to other factors. Rounds per play day were up 11% for the quarter (see full report for details). An increase in rounds per play day indicates an increase in new golfers, an increase in rounds by existing golfers, or both. The full report is available at both HTTP://www.ngf.org and HTTP://www.golf2020.com. McDONALD'S & GAM PARTNER TO "TAKE A KID TO GOLF" The Golf Association of Michigan (GAM) and 25 Lansing-area McDonald's restaurants are partnering to encourage parents and kids to take a swing at golf, together, this spring. The "Take a kid to golf" program provides customers with an affordable way to enjoy four Lansing-area golf courses. Program participants can pick up a complimentary "Take a kid to golf" voucher, available beginning April 24 at Lansing-area McDonald's restaurants, that can be redeemed for free kid's (up to age 14) greens fees with the purchase of an adult round. Four Lansing-area golf courses will honor the vouchers, including: The Falcon Golf Course in Bath, El Dorado Golf Course in Mason, Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing and Meridian Sun Golf Course in Haslett. The vouchers are good through June 30, 2004. Taken and edited from a GAM release from Tonia Branch http://gam.org AUGUSTA CADDIES CENTER STATE AT 2004 MASTERS Ward Clayton, author of the newly released book Men on the Bag, was one of the success stories of the 2004 Masters. Arriving in Augusta, where he once worked as the sports editor for the Augusta Chronicle, Clayton was prepared to do a few book signings and a TV interview. Interest in his story snowballed into a media whirlwind that saw him give numerous talks to local and international groups, culminating Saturday evening at an event for Chevron executives at the famous Partridge Inn. "Once we arrived, the media came out of the woodwork," according to Skip DeWall, Sports Media Group Publisher. "Ward appeared on all local network news programs and two cable shows and he did national radio interviews including WJR in Detroit and WGN in Chicago, and programs in six smaller markets. Barnes & Noble and Books-a-Million conducted book signings. Ward and I visited most of the 40 locations in Augusta that stocked the book to meet retailers and sign book inventory. One of the highlights of the week was doing a book signing at the prestigious Mayor's reception, which was a celebration of Arnold Palmer's 50th Masters." DeWall said, "If Ward had signed as many books as Arnie did autogrpaphs, we'd be out of stock right now!" Sports Media Group sold the first printing of Men on the Bag and is scheduled to release the second printing on April 16, 2004. LPGA TEACHING TIP OF THE WEEK Short putts So many times, we are left with putts ranging from 3 to 5 feet, and it is upsetting when your confidence wanes on these distances. This putting drill is designed to increase your confidence. Find a hole that has some break to it. Place four balls in a line, six inches apart, starting 2 feet from the hole. Make four in a row and then proceed around the hole making four more in a row putting on a different line. To make this drill a little more challenging, make four lines around the hole with various breaks and try to sink all 16 putts in a row. After practicing this drill you should once again develop confidence in your short putts. Most importantly, think positive and the putts will fall! Bruce Matthews and Robert Trent Jones for the first of our series, on ÒMichigan's Golf Course Architects Ò. Both were born at the turn of one century and died, as a new one was to begin. We hope you enjoy our words, and just as importantly our supportive video. While it is always interesting to study and write about the accomplishments of architects, it is quite another thing to offer readers of a magazine the opportunity to become viewers, by simply clicking on a link. THE BIG BREAK VISITS THE GAYLORD GOLF MECCA by Vanessa Bell and Brian Manning The Golf Channel launched "The Big Break" reality TV show this past fall, and it was a hit. Vanessa Bell, Art McCafferty and Brian Manning bring you the story, as they interview "The Big Break" host Rick Smith and 2nd place winner, Rochester Hills' Anthony Sorentino. NOTRE DAME HEAD COACH, TYRONE WILLINGHAM ON GOLF AND FOOTBALL by John Wukovitz Tyrone Willingham, Notre Dame head football coach, chats with John Wukovitz about the parallels between football and golf. Wukovitz thought he might catch the coach in a more laid back atmosphere. It was nothing doing as Willingham seems to be just as uptight as a golfer as he is as a coach. RISK AND REWARD:REACHABLE PAR FIVES by John Bebow John Bebow, formerly of the Detroit News and now a reporter for the Chicago Tribune, discusses the risk and rewards of the 3rd hole at The Bear, the 16th at Eagle Crest Resort and a number of other temptations that golfers will find interesting. SLICE OF LIFE by Terry Moore " Pardon the interruption, but I must get a few things off my chest. Usually a nice, comforting essay about some aspect of golf is in order for this column but spring fever and the emergence of the Michigan golf season have gotten the better of me. There have been so many incidents and media tempests surrounding the game that I must jump in and offer my two cents worth. Terry Moore offers another look at his view of the golf life."
