MGN ON THE ROAD
POWELL, OHIO
We ventured into the Buckeye state to check out the new Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest course in Powell. Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club is an 18 hole layout amidst some very nice homes. "It is a straightforward, strategic golf course with a reward for every good shot and ample room to recover for lesser play. Challenge, strategy and redemption, this is what golf is all about and Kinsale is the epitome of the game." Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest

The course, which has been allowed to grow in, will have a media day in May and then a Grand Opening for members in mid June. We had the chance to chat with Andrea Kruse, Sales Director for the development and she indicated that sales were brisk. Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest have an amazing track record in developing high end golf/real estate developments. They are the best in the world at it. Brent Kalb is the Golf Professional at Kinsale. Their website is a basically a place holder now, but will launch later this spring as their new course rolls out. http://golfkinsale.com

ANGELS CROSSING-A NEW COURSE IN VICKSBURG
Tim Hygh chats with owner Jim Thompson and architect W. Bruce Matthews III, about the new Angels Crossing course that will be opening in Vicksburg this year. The course, an economic answer for a community that lost some of their industrial base, is a throwback to how a golf course use to look in the early 20th Century. When you think architectural style, think 1903.

"Our goal has always been to be a club where people can, not only play, but learn the game of golf." MICHIGAN'S GOLF COURSE ARCHITECTS-W.BRUCE MATTHEWS AND ROBERT TRENT JONES-PART I
By L'anse Bannon and Art McCafferty
We have chosen W. Bruce Matthews and Robert Trent Jones for the first of our series, on "Michigan's Golf Course Architects ". Both were born at the turn of one century and died, as a new one was to begin. We hope you enjoy our words, and just as importantly our supportive video. While it is always interesting to study and write about the accomplishments of architects, it is quite another thing to offer readers of a magazine the opportunity to become viewers, by simply clicking on a link.

THE BIG BREAK VISITS THE GAYLORD GOLF MECCA
by Vanessa Bell and Brian Manning
The Golf Channel launched "The Big Break" reality TV show this past fall, and it was a hit. Vanessa Bell, Art McCafferty and Brian Manning bring you the story, as they interview "The Big Break" host Rick Smith and 2nd place winner, Rochester Hills' Anthony Sorentino.

NOTRE DAME HEAD COACH, TYRONE WILLINGHAM ON GOLF AND FOOTBALL
by John Wukovitz
Tyrone Willingham, Notre Dame head football coach, chats with John Wukovitz about the parallels between football and golf. Wukovitz thought he might catch the coach in a more laid back atmosphere. It was nothing doing as Willingham seems to be just as uptight as a golfer as he is as a coach.

RISK AND REWARD:REACHABLE PAR FIVES
by John Bebow
John Bebow, formerly of the Detroit News and now a reporter for the Chicago Tribune, discusses the risk and rewards of the 3rd hole at The Bear, the 16th at Eagle Crest Resort and a number of other temptations that golfers will find interesting.

SLICE OF LIFE
by Terry Moore
" Pardon the interruption, but I must get a few things off my chest. Usually a nice, comforting essay about some aspect of golf is in order for this column but spring fever and the emergence of the Michigan golf season have gotten the better of me. There have been so many incidents and media tempests surrounding the game that I must jump in and offer my two cents worth.
Terry Moore offers another look at his view of the golf life."

A man was golfing with a friend and went to the restroom. He came out sighing audibly.

His friend asked him, "Feel better?"

"Yeah," he said, "It's the only place on the whole course where nobody
tells me how to improve my stance or change my grip!"

OLIN EARNS INDIVIDUAL INVITATION TO NCAA CENTRAL REGIONAL
Junior Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) of the University of Michigan women's golf team was selected Monday (April 26) as an individual participant for the 2004 NCAA Central Regional.

"This is sort of bittersweet," said Olin. "Hands down this would have been so much better if the entire team qualified and were going as well, but things just didn't work out this year. I never really looked at it from the standpoint that I could go as an individual."

The regional will be Thursday through Saturday (May 6-8) at Illinois State's University Golf Course in Normal, Ill. The top eight teams and the top two individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Championship May 18-21 in Auburn, Ala.

GAM AMATEURS PREPARE TO DEFEND FULLER CUP
The top amateur and professional golfers are set to compete for the Fuller Cup on Tuesday, May 4 at Eagle Eye Golf Club in East Lansing. The GAM amateur team defeated the PGA team 12-6 at the 2003 Fuller Cup for only the 4th time in the 32 year history of the Fuller Cup.

LPGA TIP OF THE WEEK
Left is right!
How you line up a golf shot pretty much determines where it will go. Aim and alignment are factors you can control before you swing. Because we rarely hit it "pure" every time, a good pre-shot routine that gets you properly aligned to the target may help you have "superior miss-hits."

Begin your pre-shot routine from behind the ball. This is the only way that you can clearly establish the target line using both eyes (binocular vision). Once your brain has the intended message about alignment, you can begin your approach to the golf ball with confidence because this information is now stored in short-term memory.

From this point, the procedure is straight forward and can become automatic with repetition. First, place your hands on the handle, keeping the clubface square. Then, aim the square clubface to the target on the line you established from behind the ball. Next, align your body (checking feet, thighs, hips and shoulders) parallel and left of the target line, addressing the golf ball. Last, with confidence, trust your aim and alignment and make your best effort to create the shot. Even if you do not hit it perfectly, it will likely be on line, heading towards the intended targetÑa great miss at the very least!

With experience and repetition, this pre-shot routine will become automatic. So remember, left is in fact right! Take time to work on a quality pre-shot routine because if you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.

This week's tip courtesy of Deb Vangellow, Sweetwater Country Club in Houston, Texas
