BUICK UPDATE: By Terry Moore
==========================
Live Via Satellite: Tiger Woods……………by Terry Moore

(Grand Blanc, MI)  Casually dressed in a Stanford tee-shirt, shorts, and wearing a Nike TW
cap, Tiger Woods held court—via a satellite videoconference—at the Buick Open Media Day on
Monday at Warwick Hills. He appeared relaxed and calm and answered all of the media’s
queries forthrightly and diplomatically. And most importantly, he quickly assured the
gathering about his intentions to play in the event on June 25-July 1 despite the pending
birth of his first child around the first week in July. “I know everyone thinks the
tournament is up in the air for me, but I intend on playing the tournament.” And “intend
to play” works just fine for Buick Open officials for now and reinforces all of the
Tiger-centered marketing and advertising for the 49th edition of the tourney. With Tiger
still in the field, ticket and hospitality sales should remain robust. Other Tiger tidbits
from the interview:

	•	Last weekend, Tiger was at the wedding of his “best buddy” on the “West Coast.” This
weekend Tiger is in Las Vegas for his benefit concert with Bon Jovi and Hootie and the
Blowfish. He’ll only play in the Memorial Tournament     before the U.S. Open.
	•	He really enjoys playing at Warwick Hills and it’s not just sponsor or host course
pandering (see Gary Player.com) “It’s straightforward and the greens are always in
fantastic shape. Over the years, I’ve become very fond of being able to play a golf course
that’s old and traditional.” Hard to believe, given its barren and brash (at the time)
debut back in the late 50s, that Warwick Hills is now old and traditional but as Tiger
later added, “We don’t get a chance to play tree-lined golf courses very much.”
	•	Speaking of trees, Tiger remarked that he visited Oakmont (site of this year’s Open)
and they’re mostly gone (do to renovation project years ago) and the course now is “more
like a links, inland links…and now back to its original design.”
	•	I asked Tiger if he concerned himself with his current driving accuracy statistic which
lists him as only hitting 54% of the fairways compared to 2000 when he hit 72%. True to
form Tiger knocked the question out of ballpark. “If I hit it as short as I did in 2000, I
would hit more fairways.” Tiger went on to explain that with longer shafts, hotter face,
and hotter ball, it’s “hard to keep the ball in the fairway.”  And as a kicker, he added,
“If I happen to go back and hit the ball shorter, like I did at Hoylake (British Open), I
led in driving accuracy that week.”
	•	And finally Tiger livened up the proceedings when asked to comment on the “loose
cannon” (in the words of questioner Bill Hobson) and “trash talking” Rory Sabbatini: “Rory
is very opinionated, very fiery….Sometimes he doesn’t have that filter on. It just comes
out. That’s why he’s Rory.” Leave it to Tiger, defending champion of the Buick Open, to
suggest to his Nike compatriot an oil, lube and filter change.

================= MGN ON THE ROAD ================= Indiana Our recent trip to French Lick reminded us of a number of excellent Indiana courses we have played in the past. Some notable courses are The Fort a Pete Dye course in Indianapolis, Purgatory at Noblesville, Tim Liddy's Trophy Club, Salt River in Brown County and Sultan's Run in Jaspar. Video: http://michigangolfer.tv/2002shows/show4/ Print: http://www.webgolfer.com/jan03/2003_Indiana.html Ohio-Sawmill Creek Resort Sawmill Creek Resort, which is located on Lake Erie, had a  recent fire in their kitchen.  While still open, the place does have a smokey smell  to it. However, the golf course looks to be in great shape and the clubhouse, sans the main dining room, was busy. http://www.sawmillcreek.com/ ========================================== NEW SHOWS ON MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION ========================================== Hemlock GC with John Kennedy We were able to catch up with, co-owner and superintendent, John Kennedy at the Michigan Golf Show and combine his remarks with some video we shot on a beautiful day in Ludington last summer. Kennedy gives us a great tour of his spectacular Ray Hearn designed  course.  I had asked John to talk about a few of the holes, but he kept rolling until he had talked about all of them.  So much for the signature holes approach with the loquacious John Kennedy.  In thinking about that old saw, "You/ve got to see it to believe it."  We invite you to see the Hemlock Golf Course. http://michigangolfer.tv/2007shows/hemlock/ --- Harbor Point Golf Club We are very pleased to bring you the World Premier of our Harbor Point Golf Club show.  We had lots of fun discovering the rich history of this course in our conversations with Head Professional, Shaun Bezilla. This is one of seven  Michigan golf courses that are into their 3rd century.  As we mentioned in an earlier note, the others are 1895 Wequetonsing Golf Club (Private), 1896 Harbor Beach Golf Course, 1898 Les Cheneaux Golf Club, Saginaw Country Club, Wawashkamo Golf Club and 1899 Washtenaw Country Club (Private). Our video begins in 1896 as our narrator, Shaun Bezilla, talks about how the course was built back in the days before the availability of motorized vehicles.  We have video of a team of horses working the ground to build a golf course, just as they did when this course was built in 1896.  Bezilla then takes us for a quick tour of the course as he selects four holes for us to view. This is a special show and we hope you enjoy it.   http://michigangolfer.tv/harborpoint/   ======================================= HEBERT GOING FOR 7TH MICHIGAN OPEN WIN ======================================= ACME, Mich., May 21, 2007 -- As Grand Traverse Resort & Spa last year celebrated the 25th anniversary of hosting the Michigan Open Championship, PGA Professional Scott Hebert, the Resort's Head Golf Professional, held his own celebration by winning his sixth Michigan Open, tying the record set by Michigan Golf Hall of Fame legend Al Watrous in 1949.  This year Hebert will attempt to become the all-time record-holder during the 90th Michigan Open presented by Lincoln Mercury. Last year, Hebert shot a 12-under-par 275 to win the four-day championship and the $13,000 champion's prize.  The low amateur, Randy Hutchison, a Michigan State University student from the Traverse City area, who also worked on the Resort's golf operations staff, tied for third place shooting a 7-under, 277. This year's field will consist of 258 players who will play Jack Nicklaus' signature course The Bear and Gary Player's signature course The Wolverine for the first two rounds.  The field will then be cut to the low 70 golfers and ties for rounds three and four to be played on The Bear. Tee-offs will begin at 8:00 a.m. each day.  Spectator admission is free. For additional information about the Michigan Open presented by Lincoln Mercury and other tournaments in Michigan, please visit the Michigan PGA's Web site at http://www.michigan.p

However, the book's main points or I should say points of the book deal with golfer's "Function, Strength, Nutrition and Longevity". The reader is introduced to  golf instruction, stretching exercises, food preparation and menus, nutrition information and a variety of things one can do to continue a life devoted to golf. The book is available at http://parforlife.com and the cost is $19.95 ---- The Golf Gods by Robert Brown As Father's Day and the golf season approach, our mailbox starts getting its yearly influx of golf books.  This week, "The Golf Gods: Who They Are, What They Want & How to Appease Them" appeared. The author, Robert Brown, has also written "A Thousand Rounds of Golf", "The Golfing Mind", "The Way of Golf" and "Golf is Murder". The book gets you into its mood by asking you, if you have ever experienced a golf shot that has either gone horribly wrong or wonderfully right. Well, yes I have. In my younger days as a day laborer working as a finisher in the concrete business, I had developed some strong wrists and arms. I turned these attributes loose in the golf world and took my assortment of clubs and antique golf bag and  joined my first league. I joined  the league with my pal, Don O'Brien, who was also doing his undergrad work at Oakland University.  Don was an accomplished golfer, who was teaching me the game. The course was the Pontiac Country Club and I believe it was the 6th hole, maybe 7th, but the hole played to 327 yards.  On that day, the wind was blowing hard on the tee and toward the hole,  the ground was in need of a good soaking rain for its hard pan fairways and  my normal slice seemed seemed tamed a tad on my lusty swing.  My drive soared on its way to the hole, stopping short of the green and then took the roll of its life onto the green,  stopping  a mere two feet from the hole.  The two golfers who were on the green getting ready to putt, looked up, waved and then putted out.    I was both excited  and embarrassed as I approached the green and the golfers.  The golfers were not mad, but happy to see the shot and wanted to meet the person  who hit it. Then one of them said, "Hey, pick that gimmie up for your eagle."  And so I did.  My partner, who had worshipped different golf gods, said, "Hey, you can't pick up an eagle putt like that. What's the matter with you?  You need to putt that out." Again, long on game but short on golf  protocol, I meekly put my ball back down on the green and missed my two footer and eagle, settling for a birdie. My second and this time, successful attempt at an eagle, was almost 40 years later.   I had on that day, according to Brown,  experienced both the work of a major good golf God or Bok and a demon golf god  with the name of Kcom. So there it is, a golf book, where you can drop in your own hard luck or good luck story, and more importantly can direct your wrath or happiness to the appropriate God. The book is available through  Sport Media Group at $24,95. http://annarbormediagroup.com ====================================================================== AMERICAN SOCIETY OF GOLF COURSE ARCHITECTS ELECTS SIX NEW MEMBERS ====================================================================== The American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) welcomed six new Associate Members to its ranks at the group’s recent 61st Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Ga.   The election of John Cope (North Palm Beach, Fla.), Jim Engh (Castle Rock, Colo.), Ted Robinson, Jr. (Laguna Beach, Calif.), Phil Smith (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Bryce Swanson (Montclair, N.J.) and Ken Williams (Toledo, Ohio.) brings ASGCA membership to 182. Taken and edited from a SGCA release. =================== MINZEY'S MUSINGS ================= I used to eat a lot of natural foods until I learned that most people die of natural causes. Garden Rule: When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy a replacement. Have you noticed since everyone has a camcorder these days no one talks about seeing UFOs like they used to? In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal. How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire? If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a song about him? Do illiterate people get the full effect of Alphabet Soup? Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle? ======================================= MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION INTERVIEWS ======================================= We have interviewed a number of interesting people in the world of golf during the past five years.  Pehaps, you might want to see what they had to say.  Arnold Palmer-on "The Haig'  http://michigangolfer.tv/2002shows/show21/index.html Art Hills on Red Hawk http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/redhawk/ Ben Davis on his career http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/davis/index.html Bill Paxton on The Greatest Game Ever Played http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/greatestga
