MAY
The country ever has a lagging Spring,
Waiting for May to call its violets forth,
And June its roses--showers and sunshine bring,
Slowly, the deepening verdure o'er the earth;
To put their foliage out, the woods are slack,
And one by one the singing-birds come back.
Within the city's bounds the time of flowers
Comes earlier. Let a mild and sunny day,
Such as full often, for a few bright hours,
Breathes through the sky of March the airs of May,
Shine on our roofs and chase the wintry gloom--
And lo! our borders glow with sudden bloom.
- William Cullen Bryant, Spring in Town, 1850

ROUNDS ARE DOWN IN MARCH
Same-story: rounds played in the U.S. fell 10.8% in March 2005 vs. March 2004,
according to data provided to NGF by golf course operators around the country.
The resulting year-to-date figure is 5.2% lower than the same period last year.
In the Sunbelt, where the majority of golf is played in the first quarter
of the year, only the Gulf Coast region was in positive territory (0.4%)
year-to-date. In other Sunbelt areas, the Southwest was hardest hit (down
11.5% through the first quarter), followed by South Central (down 5.8%),
the Southeast (down 2.7%) and Central/South Florida (down 2.1%).
All of the "bellwether" states that NGF is tracking - Arizona, California,
Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Texas - reported fewer rounds in first
quarter 2005 vs. 2004.
Click below to provide your April 2005 data. You can also pick up your free
local rounds report and see national, regional and bellwether reports.

ANNIE MARGULIS'S DESIGNS APPEARING IN CONDE NAST'S GOLF FOR WOMEN MAGAZINE
By Kara G. Morrison / The Detroit News
Annie Margulis urgently flipped through the pages of Conde Nast's Golf for
Women magazine, scanning each photo until she glimpsed a familiar pair of
chocolate and lavender paisley shorts.
"I about died," she says. "I was screaming."
That's because the long, slim shorts -- highlighted in a February golf fashion
spread of editor's picks along with designs by Lacoste to Lilly Pulitzer -- were her creation.
Margulis is co-owner of "girls golf," a Bloomfield Hills-based brand of women's
golf clothing and accessories that, in only its second year, is getting nationwide
buzz. Her bold, bright designs have twice been featured in national golf publications,
and demand for her clothes is getting hard to meet.
"People calling from California to Michigan for clothes is pretty cool," says the
former nurse and longtime golf enthusiast.

U OF M FORMER GOLFERS HELPING TO KEEP VIJAY SINGH ON TOP:
By Andrea Parker, U-M Athletic Media Relations
After winning nine tournaments and earning a PGA Tour single-season record
$10,905,166 last year, golfer Vijay Singh was voted the 2004 Player of the Year.
This year former University of Michigan golfer Stephanie Bezilla is doing her
best to help Singh stay on top.
Bezilla and former U-M teammate Sharon Park are engineers at Cleveland Golf,
the world's fourth largest golf equipment company. Both women graduated from
U-M with degrees in engineering and have been able to combine their flair for
math and science with their love for the game of golf in their current positions.
Bezilla takes input from Singh and other Tour players who use Cleveland's
equipment and customizes their clubs to their exact specifications. Park
starts at square one of the club-creation process as project engineer for
the irons group, overseeing all iron projects from start to finish.
While Bezilla's ultimate goal at U-M was to get a degree in mechanical
engineering and apply it to the golf industry, Park had dreams of playing golf professionally before realizing that she wanted to focus on academics and a career in engineering.

FIRST TEE IN MICHIGAN
Highlights of the First Tee Annual Review 2004 indicate that they introduced 155,000 people to the game, opened 53 dedicated facilities and established 152 new affiliates. MG had the opportunity to interview Joe Louis Barrow in 2001 and felt at the time that this was a movement that was destined for great things. They have not disappointed as the entire golf industry seems to be involved as sponsor, volunteers or mentors.
