Dick O'Dows , where "A Drink comes before a story", was the home pub of many of the Irish who visited Birmingham during the Ryder Cup. It is a terrific watering hole with fine food as well. After refreshing ourselves, we felt the magic of big time golf was closer than it was, say two pints before. Let the hype begin. We had lots of fun discovering the rich history of this course in our conversations with Head Professional, Shaun Bezilla. This is one of seven Michigan golf courses that are into their 3rd century. As we mentioned in an earlier note, the others are 1895 Wequetonsing Golf Club (Private), 1896 Harbor Beach Golf Course, 1898 Les Cheneaux Golf Club, Saginaw Country Club, Wawashkamo Golf Club and 1899 Washtenaw Country Club (Private). Our video begins in 1896 as our narrator, Shaun Bezilla, talks about how the course was built back in the days before the availability of motorized vehicles. We have video of a team of horses working the ground to build a golf course, just as they did when this course was built in 1896. Bezilla then takes us for a quick tour of the course as he selects four holes for us to view. This is a special show and we hope you enjoy it. http://michigangolfer.tv ============== WE'VE GOT MAIL ============== Art, I am disappointed that the story you ran a couple weeks ago about high school golf seasons changes has not been corrected. The court ruling that took place forces the boys to play in the spring and girls to switch to the fall, beginning this coming school year. They are not and will not play simultaneously in the same spring season as your e-publication said. Your calendar of events also still lists the boys and girls playing the state final at the same time this June; not true. Additionally, one reason it's a sad situation (there are many) is because boy's golf teams in Michigan far outnumber girls teams, so boys will now have to compete for course time in the spring, when most amateur adults are starting their leagues, where as girls teams all these years have been able to work well into the golf courses' crowded schedules. Also, more boy golfers play baseball than do girl golfers play softball, so a few boys golf coaches have already reported their teams will likely be terminated next spring due to lack of players. George Kass Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to George for the info. ======================== EMU EAGLES ARE SOARING ======================== The EMU Men's Golf Team won their first ever MAC Championship in School history last week at the Medallion CC in Westerville, OH. According to Eagles Coach Bruce Montgomery, Mother Nature provided a heavy rain needed on the final 9 holes to give them the adversity needed to make up a four shot difference and win by three strokes. Eagle Graham Hill finished at(-11), and was the individual champion. In the 3rd round they got back in the hunt by shooting a School Record (-14) 274. Graham was MAC player of the Year and Chris Ross and Bryan Haase earned 2nd Team Honors. Tthe MAC victory stamped their ticket to the NCAA Regionals. The Eagles do not know which Regional they will be going to yet. They will be played May 17-19. Six sets of golf clubs were stolen from coach Claire Neff's vehicle on Monday evening in Ypsilanti. Following reports of the theft, Neff said she got a call Wednesday from the country-rap-rock star offering to help. "I was just stunned," Neff said. Rock, a native of Romeo, Michigan, whose real name is Robert Ritchie, said he would get new custom golf clubs to replace those belonging to Neff and five players from Milan High School, about 56 kilometres southwest of Detroit. Rock talked to pro golfer John Daly, who suggested calling TaylorMade Golf, the Detroit Free Press and The Ann Arbor News reported Thursday. TaylorMade agreed to send the clubs by the end of the week. Neff said Rock told her to give TaylorMade and Daly all the credit. Frankly, I had but given it a cursory read at the time and was pleased that I had a chance to get back into it. I found it a great read and the photography compelling. Hills revealed he was not really into self promotion, but as his company began to be more global and the competition heated up, his marketing guru, Quentin Lutz felt a design book was needed. One of Michigan's great golf writers ,Michael Patrick Shiels, was brought on to take Hill's remembrances and prepare them for print. I would think that any fan of Art Hills would want this book.
