The 19th Farmers Charity Classic will be played at Egypt Valley Country Club from May 31 - June 6, 2004. Tickets are available at Huntington Banking Offices or at HTTP://StarTicketsPlus.com. A-GA-MING TO HOST 32nd MICHIGAN STATE JUNIOR A-GA-MING Golf Course will play host to the 32nd Michigan State Junior Golf Championship, August 5, 2004. A-Ga-Ming will be replacing Charlevoix Country Club, as tournament host as the latter had to bow out because of private membership policies. A-GA-MING is steeped in tradition - much of which involves its relationship with Walter Hagen who spent his later years there. A-GA-MING is a classic course in every respect; the golfer is eased into the challenge with each hole appearing to get progressively tougher. Narrow fairways lined with trouble make tee shots critical, its rolling fairways can be punishing and A-Ga-Ming's small greens require touch and imagination. This will test the best junior golfers in Michigan where the winds off Lake Michigan and Torch Lake pose the biggest problem. "This is a great tournament venue and one of Michigan's best kept secrets" says Dick Loring the tournament director. The competitors will love playing here. The tournament is a 36 hole championship open to boys 13-17 years of age who have a handicap index of 5.5 and lower. Special exemptions for players who have made the 2003 all-state in there school division, Regional qualifiers, Low 12 finishers in the 2003 championship, Junior Golf Honor Roll and other junior majors. Steve Cuzzort from Grosse Ile will be defending his Championship as well as Andy Hees from Gaylord the 2002 champion. For information, contact: Dick Loring skillplay@aol.com MARK WILSON APPOINTED PGA NATIONAL RULES CHAIRMAN Mark Wilson of Grand Rapids has been appointed chairman of the national PGA of America Rules Committee. Wilson, 48, in his 23rd season as head professional at Watermark Country Club in Grand Rapids, will succeed Don Essig of Indianapolis, IN in January 2005. A PGA member since 1984, Wilson is a native of Grand Rapids, a 1978 graduate of Michigan State University and turned professional that same year. He served as an assistant professional from 1978-80 at Watermark Country Club, then spent one year at nearby Blythefield Country Club. In the fall of 1981, he was named head professional at Watermark Country Club. Wilson is a six-time winner of the Michigan PGA Section Horton Smith Award (1989, '92, '93, '94, '95, '96), honored for his work to improve and provide contributions to member education. He has served since 1989 as Section Rules chairman. He also has been a speaker at 15 PGA/USGA National Rules Workshops, numerous PGA education program events or seminars and has served the past six years as Rules editor for PGA Magazine. "I am honored to be appointed chairman," said Wilson. "I believe that the strength of the PGA Rules Committee comes from the committee members who take the practice of the Rules of Golf seriously and have applied their skills unselfishly over the years." Taken and edited from a PR release from Julius Mason of the PGA jmason@pgahq.com DAVE PELZ TO MEET, GREET GOLF SCHOOL STUDENTS Dave Pelz will be at The Homestead to greet students when they arrive on May 26 and again the following morning, as his teaching staff 'kicks off' the May 27-29 session of the Dave Pelz Scoring Game School. These students will have an opportunity to meet and spend time with Pelz and and the first to see and learn on the new five-acre learning facility, complete with greens, bunkers, aprons, targets and hitting areas designed by Pelz to create an optimal learning environment for the short game and putting. "I'm truly excited about this beautiful teaching center at The Homestead. It has everything we need to teach the Scoring Game to the best of our abilities," Pelz says. "This really is the perfect environment for teaching and learning golf. My wife and I love being here - the hospitality and friendliness is unparalleled - and it's as gorgeous as any vacation spot you'll find." To learn more about three-day schools and one-day clinics at The Homestead, visit http:/www.pelzgolf.com or call 800-833-7370. Taken from a PR from Communications & Media Specialist cm@pelzgolf.com *Note-"Last year, when the MG was at the Homestead taping a show, I had the opportunity to chat with Dave Pelz. When I asked him how his last book sold, he indicated that "it got me my plane." There is a reason why this former NASA scientist is going great guns; he is great. View the video we did with him last summer. He is hypnotic as he discusses his approach to the game. This was our highest rated show of last year. We had over 5,000 viewers that week. http://michigangolfer.tv/2003shows/show18/index.html GOLF ROUNDS PLAYED INCREASE IN MARCH; YTD ROUNDS PLAYED AHEAD OF 2003 According to the most recent National Golf Rounds Played Report compiled by Golf Datatech, March was a very good month and continued the upturn started in January 2004. MICHIGAN GOLF HALL OF FAME TO INDUCT POHL, CROSBY, ANDERSON HIESTAND, SYRON AND SAYLOR THIS SUNDAY This Sunday, the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame Outing, held at Indianwood, will welcome its latest members. http://michigan-golf-foundation.com ELECTED TO MICHIGAN GOLF HALL OF FAME by Jack Berry A broad spectrum of golf was represented in the 2004 election to the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame: touring professionals Dan Pohl and Elaine Crosby, top amateur Mary Jane Anderson Hiestand, public course owner and supporter Lloyd Syron and longtime Detroit Free Press golf writer Jack Saylor who was elected posthumously. Michigan Golf Foundation co-chairman Bob McMasters said the induction ceremony for the five will be May 16 at Indianwood Golf and Country Club in Lake Orion. Pohl, two-time winner of the Michigan Amateur championship, was renowned as one of the biggest hitters in golf and won twice on the PGA Tour including the prestigious Colonial National Invitation. He lost the 1982 Masters Tournament to Craig Stadler in a playoff after a brilliant 10-under-par weekend finish of 67-67 that included a Masters record four hole streak in the Saturday round. Pohl eagled the par 5 13th hole, sank his approach shot on the par 4 14th for another eagle and then birdied the 15th and 16th holes. Pohl also tied for the 1985 Greater Hartford Open but lost in a playoff to Phil Blackmar. Mt. Pleasant native Pohl played 421 tournaments in 20-plus years on the PGA Tour and made the cut in 300 of them and had 70 top ten finishes. He played on the 1987 Ryder Cup team and won the Vardon Trophy for best stroke average that year. Pohl has had a number injuries, surgery on both knees, his back and neck, but currently is working hard to qualify for the Champions Tour when he turns 50 next year. Crosby didn't start playing golf until she was 20 as tennis had been her game. But while a student at the University of Michigan the Jackson native picked up golf, made the varsity team from 1978-80, won the Michigan Womens' Amateur and then turned professional. She won on the Futures Tour and joined the LPGA Tour in 1985 and had two victories and numerous top five finishes including a second in the Oldsmobile Classic and three runner-ups at the Lady Keystone Open, a tournament she won in 1994. Crosby was so well-regarded by her peers that she served on the Executive Committee from 1992-94 and was elected president of the LPGA Tournament Division in 1994. Crosby currently is a leading teacher and has a school for women at Crystal Mountain Resort. Anderson Hiestand was voted Michigan Woman Player of the Decade in 2000 by the Golf Association of Michigan. She has been a winner on every amateur level starting with two championship years at Clarkston High School, 1975-76, three State Amateur titles, 1990, 1995 and 2000 and the State Public Links championship in 1999. Anderson Hiestand dominated the Women’s District Golf Association with seven match play and eight stroke play championships. Nationally she qualified three times for the U.S. Womens' Open and 14 times for the U.S. Mid-Amateur championship and made match play each year. Syron couldn't help but spend his life in golf his father, Frank Syron, was a golf professional and his parents bought Elizabeth Lake Golf & Country Club in 1941, changed the name to Pontiac Country Club and turned it into a mecca for public golfers. Lloyd started out caddying, went to Notre Dame and won the 1957 Michigan Amateur. He played in three NCAA golf championships and then settled into the family business. Pontiac CC is a family affair and they've been a major supporter of public golf in southeast Michigan. Lloyd coached the Pontiac Catholic High School golf team for 11 years and both Waterford high schools use the Syron course as their home course. The Frank Syron Memorial Tournament has been a stroke play fixture for the state's best publinxers every Fourth of July weekend since 1969. Saylor, who passed away last November, enlivened the local, state and national golf scene with his deft touch at the keyboard, first at a typewriter, then at a computer and always the piano where he always drew a crowd, whether it was the stately Carolina Inn at Pinehurst, N.C., or at the Mission Inn in Carmel, California, where Clint Eastwood dropped in. Known as much for his colorful outfits as his colorful writing, Saylor started at the Pontiac Press, then the Detroit Times and found a home at the Free Press for 43 years, 30 of them covering golf. He covered all the sports, including the Detroit Pistons, Jud Heathcote's Michigan State basketball and Notre Dame football but golf was No. 1. Saylor was at home as much with a golf club in his hands as a pen and notebook and as diligent in finding the right sentence as he was in finding the right yardage. He played from coast to coast and in 1990 covered the British Open at St. Andrews but also managed to work his way around other great Scottish courses and relayed his impressions to Free Press readers. MICHIGAN GOLFER MAGAZINE MAY/JUNE ISSUE NOW ONLINE EVERYWHERE http://michigangolfer.com ----------------------------------------ADV----------------- GOLFMATES.COM LAUNCHES FIRST ONLINE DATING SERVICE FOR SINGLE GOLFERS Golfmates.com recently announced the launch of the world's first online dating service designed specifically for golfers. The unique concept of an online dating site designed specifically for golfers is the brainchild of Omaha-based entrepreneur Scott Kroeger, who, after setting up a handful of friends on dates, decided that the golfing community needed an online dating service where anyone interested in the sport could find like-minded golfmates. The demand for online dating services has grown explosively in the last five years. The Computer Industry Almanac estimates that the market for online dating services was worth $1 billion in 1998 and $1.5 billion last year. The number of U.S. citizens using online personal ads is expected to reach 24 million by 2007. The United States National Golf Foundation estimates that there are more than 26 million golfers over the age of 18 in the United States. Sixty percent of golfers in the United States own home computers, and 90 percent use computers at work. Fifty-eight percent of golfers in the United States use the Internet.
