MG ON THE ROAD
Ann Arbor-Barton Hills CC
Don White and his team, Corey Gerhart GM, Tim Dark, Superintendent and Jordan Young the teaching professional, are getting ready to host the upcoming Michigan Women's Amateur from July 10-14. While the 90th Michigan Women's Amateur will be demanding, the Barton team should be ready as they also hosted the U.S. Women's Amateur in 1998. As you may recall, Grace Park was the winner.

Barton Hills is a Donald Ross design, with the club coming on board in 1919. It has the high ground in the Ann Arbor area and the scenic course, which plays to 6880 from the tips, will provide a great challenge for Michigan's women amateurs.

PERSPECTIVES ON GOLF
Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle, followed by a good bottle of beer

Golf! You hit down to make the ball go up. You swing left and the ball goes right. The lowest score wins.

And on top of that, the winner buys the drinks.

"Golf is harder than baseball. In golf, you have to play your foul balls."

A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers ... neither of whom can putt very well.

An interesting thing about golf is that no matter how badly you play; it is always possible to get worse.

Golf's a hard game to figure. One day you'll go out and slice it and shank it, hit into all the traps and miss every green. The next day you go out and for no reason at all you really stink.?

To some golfers, the greatest handicap is the inability to add correctly.

In golf, some people tend to get confused with all the numbers... they shoot a six, yell fore and write five.

Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Dr. Jack Minzey for passing these on.these chestnuts.

TENNANTS ANYONE?
You can kick off the summer by attending the Crystal Mountain Beer & Brat Festival this weekend. The festival will feature some of Michigan's finest micro brewed beers and specialty brats. There is a $15 admission cost, which includes a souvenir mug plus beer, brat tickets and lives entertainment. The event is held at Kinlochen Plaza.

*Editor's Note - While there will be many specialty beers available, make sure you quaff down a couple of Tennants, Scotland's finest beer. It is terrific.

BOOK REVIEW:"BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE"- by Christine Brennan
Art McCafferty
Christine Brennan slipped into Ann Arbor this week as part of her book tour promoting her latest, "Best Seat in the House: A Father, A Daughter and a Journey in Sports". Brennan, who grew up in Toledo followed the Mud Hens, Tigers and Wolverines in her youth. She attended famed journalism school, Northwestern Universitym, and then had a writing career at the Miami Herald, Washington Post and USA Today. At her stop at the Washington Post, she found herself as part of a sports writing team that included Tony Kornheiser and Mike Wilbon, now known for their PTI show.

The title came from Brennan's remembrances of attending the infamous 1969 Ohio State-Michigan football game with her father. Being as that historic game was one of a number of early childhood experiences that led her to a career in sports journalism. She is also the author of the best-selling skating books "Inside Edge" and "Edge of Glory."

On hand to greet her at Ann Arbor's Borders book store, were a couple of former Toledo classmates, writing pal Joann Barnas of the Detroit Free Press and former Tiger pitcher Tom Timmerman. Timmerman was one of her sports heroes when she was growing up.

The book was a fast and fun read that is full of stories of the Tigers, Mud Hens, Michigan Wolverines as well as many high profile athletes she has covered in the past three decades. I highly recommend it.
