MGN ON THE ROAD
Ann Arbor-We spent most of a morning with one of the best golf architectural firms in the world, Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates. It was great hearing how these two have worked together to forge a firm that has designed 140 new courses and renovated an additional 100.

We had the opportunity to tape a number of up coming shows with Bill Shelton, host of the Michigan Golfer TV Show. One deals with their preparation of Inverness for the U.S. Senior Open, and a second with their rich history of golf course architect and the third, their preparation of Oakland Hills CC for the Ryder Cup. Of particular note, was finding out about the substantial amount of work they will do on the course AFTER the Ryder Cup.

We also found out that Mike Shiels is working with the firm to bring out a coffee table book that will feature the firm's work.

Sturgis
Stopped by and said hello to Paul Hagerty of Klinger Lake CC. The club, built in 1920, really could be added to the list of road holes. Holes 17, 18 and 9 were visible from US 12. As we drove by, the fairways and greens were so lush, we just had to turn in and capture some video on a few holes for later showing on MGTV.

Golf legends, Ben Hogan, Jimmy Demaret and Byron Nelson have all played there. Paul pointed out that they only put through about 9,000 rounds per year. It is a beauty.

Vicksburg
We had the chance to drive some of the holes at the new Angel's Crossing with owner, Bob Thompson. While we just had a brief look, it is still growing in, what we saw was impressive. This will be W.Bruce Matthews III first Signature course. Look for a late summer opening, if the weather cooperates, if not, spring 2004. The hole that will set tongues wagging, will be the 6th with its 1200 sq ft green.

MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION- A MICHIGAN ARCHITECT FAMILY: HARLEY AND GREG HODGES
Harley Hodges and his son Greg, have built quite q few golf courses in southern Michigan. Join our host Bill Shelton as he interviews the father and son team. The Hodges now own and operate Saline's Rustic Glen.

GOLF BUSINESS FEATURES RICK SMITH IN THEIR TEE BOX

WHALEY NAMED SPOKESPERSON FOR TAKE YOUR DAUGHTER TO THE COURSE WEEK

Suzy Whaley, the first woman to qualify for a PGA Tour event since Babe Zaharias in 1945, is lending her voice in support of Take Your Daughter to the Course Week, a program of the National Golf Course Owners Association's (NGCOA) award-winning Get Linked Play Golf player development program.

"I am so pleased to be the spokesperson for Take Your Daughter to the Course Week. It is a truly unique opportunity to introduce girls to this great game," Whaley said. "Golf is a game of integrity, fairness, personal challenges, achievements and family.

Take Your Daughter to the Course Week will be July 7-13, 2003. More than 400 courses across the country will offer free green fees and host special promotions to introduce young women to the game of golf. All participating courses are listed on http://www.getlinkedplaygolf.com.

"Suzy Whaley is the ideal spokesperson for Take Your Daughter to the Course Week," said Mike Hughes, NGCOA executive director. "She is a dedicated and talented professional and is an excellent role model for young women."

Take Your Daughter to the Course Week is offered in cooperation with Golf For Women magazine, LPGA, LPGA-USGA Girls Golf, and the Executive Women's Golf Association. This is the fourth year for this event. Last year more than 9,800 junior girls participated.

*Contact NGCOA if you would like information on the Take Your Daughter to the Course Week event planned in your area.

ONLINE PUBLISHERS REPORT BOOMING ONLINE AD SALES
The Online Publishers Association, a group representing the top names in online publishing, said its members withstood pressures from the war with Iraq, coming through the first quarter with flying colors where advertising was concerned.

In a survey, two dozen OPA members reported 40.7 percent average growth in ad revenue in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period a year ago. Overall revenue was said to grow an average of 37.6 percent.

The ad-revenue data mostly jibes with the audited results of publicly traded publishers, which reported strong revenue growth. For example, New York Times Digital reported its first-quarter revenue was up 21 percent, Knight Ridder Digital's rose 31 percent, Wasningtonpost.Newsweek Interactive climbed 27 percent. All three credited robust ad sales for their positive results, and both NYTD and KRD reported small operating profits. Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive's profits are not broken out.

"The strong ad revenue growth of OPA member companies provides further proof that advertisers are directing their spending toward high-quality content sites," he said.

In the third quarter 2002, the last period the OPA surveyed, 18 participating members reported ad-revenue up an average of 35.7 percent and total revenue up an average of 47.4 percent compared to the same period a year earlier.

The OPA has trumpeted the Internet's dominant role during the day. Earlier this month, the OPA released a study with Millward Brown InteliQuest that delved deeper into how people used the Internet during the day. The OPA, and its members, have sponsored a variety of research into the subject.

THE EIGHTH ANNUAL JEFF DANIELS COMEDY GOLF JAM WILL AIR ON THE GOLF CHANNEL
Jeff Daniels, Executive Director of The Purple Rose Theatre Company in Chelsea, Michigan will host the Eighth Annual Jeff Daniels Comedy Golf Jam on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at the Polo Fields in Ann Arbor. Sponsors at the $5,000 level receive a celebrity fifth, their company name emblazoned on shirts, balloons, banners and holes, plus the benefits of a foursome at the $2,500 level: breakfast, lunch and dinner, hole signage, recognition at the event, in Purple Rose Programs and in bright lights in the lobby for on year.

The Polo Fields in Ann Arbor has accommodated stunts and tricks such as Jeff Daniels flying in on an ultra-lite airplane on the first tee, golf balls delivered by parachutist and handed directly to Mr. Daniels, and is the first Michigan course to have live alligators on one of its holes.

This year's theme is JEFF DANIELS PICKS ON THE TOP ALL-TIME MOVIES. A different movie will be represented at each hole, including Rear Window, 2001: Space Odyssey, King Kong, The Wizard of Oz, Singiní in the Rain, Ben Hur, Some Like it Hot, and others.

The Golf Outing begins at 10:00 AM and ends after dinner at 5:00 P.M. Call Judy Gallagher, Purple Rose Theatre Company Development Director at 734-433-7782 for details.

HOLE IN ONE BOOK IS AN ACE
Chris Rodell has just penned "Hole in One!, an Andrews McMeel Publishing book. It is one of those quick reads that you can grab and put in your bag as you head out for a trip. It mentions Trevino's hole in one at Treetops, the earliest one, a shot hit at 6:30 A.M. at Gull Lake View in 1977, Eddie Randolph got a hole in one on his first day of retirement at Plum Hollow GC in Southfield, birthday boy, Bob Hope had six of them and you can see Robert Trent Jones himself describe his own hole in one on the Baltusrol Golf Club's Lower Course 4th hole. Criticised by some of the members for making the hole too tough, he holed out the 4th and said, "Gentlemen, the hole is fair. Eminently fair." http://michigangolfer.tv ( see the Robert Trent Jones shows)

GOLF COURSE ON GOVERNORS ISLAND? BY TOM DOAK?
John Atwood, Editor in Chief of Travel & Leisure Golf magazine, in a May 24 New York Times story, recommended that the current six holes on Governors Island be expanded to 18 and that it become a course that the nation would want to play. Having said that, he mentioned that Tom Doak, originally from New York, would be the architect who could deliver that type of product. Doak, said it was a terrific idea and that he would love to return to New York to do it.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
Mary had a little putt, she needed it for par.
Mary has a second putt...the first one went too far!
- Margaret Kennard, Rhymes from the Rough (1992)

Here's to the man with club in hand
Here's to the king of bogey land;
Here's to the clubs with outlandish names
And here's to golf, the game of games!

I drove a ball into the air.
It fell to earth, I know not where.
But if I'd found it, I'll bet you,
I would have done that hole in two!
