MICHIGAN GOLFER ON THE ROAD
==============================
Bellaire - Bellaire Golf Club 1927-2008
Yep, it's true, the former Bellaire Golf Club is now fallow, with the fairways being taken over by tall grasses and weeds. A sleepy little course since its birth in 1927. Bob Hirzel bought the course during the golf boom and developed another nine in 1997. Pat Savant, formerly of Shanty Creek Resort, was the GM for the past few years. Bellaire is a casualty of Michigan's sour economy and an unfortunate golf course glut. O.I.L., the new owner, bought the course for what lies beneath its soils rather than whats lies on top.

We took up The Chief's Dave Hill on his suggestion to try out Lulu's restaurant in Bellaire. It was an excellent suggestion. The town of Bellaire really grows on a person.

Gaylord - Otsego Club
Mark Hogan, has been instrumental in putting junior golf back on the front burner in Gaylord. He basically picked up on the work that Randy and Sue Coleman started in 1995 and Patrick Duffy continued for a few year's after. The idea seemed to flounder until Hogan got it going again. Last year, over a 170 kids were involved and this year the number is similar. They have even started their own website at http://www.gaylordjuniorgolf.com

Vanderbilt - Black Bear
It is nice to see Black Bear coming along under its new ownership. The course has struggled since its opening in 1996 and has always been somewhat of a step child to the Gaylord Golf Mecca. That is not the case anymore. It is maturing under the current diet of tender loving care http://www.golfblackbear.net .

West Bloomfield- Bay Pointe Golf Club
Yesterday, was a great day for me as I had the chance to meet Gene Bone. I remember reading about him when I was a paperboy for the Pontiac Press. He was really the first professional golfer I started to follow and he seemed to be in the papers each summer for a couple of years, Anyway, Jack Berry, did a nice interview, and we will be bringing you some of Gene' recollections soon.

Note: The 18-hole "Bay Pointe" course at the Bay Pointe Golf Club facility in West Bloomfield, Michigan features 6,220 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71. The course rating is 69.9 and it has a slope rating of 124 on Bent grass. Designed by William Fuller, the Bay Pointe golf course

WEST COAST REPORT: By Terry Moore
=================================
First, it’s nice to report on the solid and profitable finishes last weekend by Michigan natives Allison Fouch and John Morse on the LPGA and Champions PGA Tour circuits respectively. At the Ginn Tribute in Charleston, SC, Fouch continued her fine play this season by cashing a check for $27,820 and finishing T-20th. After opening with a 67 and tying for fifth place, the East Grand Rapids native faltered on the second day carding a 77 yet still making the cut. Fouch regained her form over the weekend, firing a pair of 69s to end on a positive note. The finish placed her within the Top 35 money Tour winners this season and thus exempts her into the U.S. Women’s Open in late June at Interlachen CC in Minnesota.

Meanwhile, Marshall’s John Morse had an outstanding tournament this past weekend at the Principal Charity Classic in West Des Moines, IA. A Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member, Morse earned $57,664 by his rounds of 69-71-67, finishing T-5th for the week. Turning 50 in February, Morse had failed to qualify on Monday in three earlier Champions events. But in Iowa Morse prevailed by shooting 71 in the rain to claim one of the qualifying spots. By finishing in the top 10 he’s now exempted into the next Champions event, the Bank of America Championship outside Boston. Morse credits “lots of hard work on my game” and also instruction from Henry Young at Treetops and Gary Robinson in Coldwater.

On Monday, I played in the PGA Championship Media Day on at Oakland Hills CC (South course) and marveled at the subtle yet important renovations carefully applied to the course by noted architect Rees Jones. Although lengthened by 344 yards, with more narrow fairways and improved bunkering, Oakland Hills’ basic charm and steely character remain intact. Rees has given this storied layout a tune-up and detailing suitable to the modern game. The biggest changes—in terms of outward appearance—occur at the par-four 7th and par-four 16th holes. With the 7th tee pushed back by 38 yards, this hole has a new open look with an enlarged pond on the right side and redesigned bunkering on the left. The edges of the pond now boast tasteful layered slate facing that lends a further clean look to the hole. Likewise on the famed dogleg right 16th hole, that same slate is applied to the pond’s edging while intrusive pines have been removed to improve sight lines from the tee. In terms of difficulty, the par-three 9th hole will be a bear especially if a prevailing west wind occurs. This hole has been lengthened by 38 yards and is now a daunting 257 yards. Some long-hitting media members this past Monday couldn’t get home there with a driver. But for the pros expect to see lots of strong hybrids and even three-metals coming out of their bags.

What I liked best about Rees’ handiwork is what he didn’t do. He didn’t lay a glove on the green surfaces, leaving them sacrosanct. As Tiger Woods noted in his teleconference that day, the greens on the South Course are “absolutely demanding.” He ranked them second only to Oakmont for difficulty. So in August when the world’s best golfers arrive in Bloomfield Township, the familiar Monster will still be waiting for them with sharpened teeth and claws and demanding the very best in terms of execution and course management.

A limited number of Daily Ground Tickets are available for the PGA Championship set for Aug. 4-10 at a price of $85 for the first two rounds and $125 for the weekend. Following the Masters lead, juniors will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult ticket holder. To purchase tickets visit http://www.pga2008.com

UPPER PENINSULA GOLFERS MAKING THEIR MARK
============================================
Michigan State bound Dan and Dave Ellis both (qualifying at Greywalls), along with Wayne State freshman Eric Johnson will play in both the Michigan Amateur and the Michigan Open for the first time. It's the first time they all made a big event since they were 10 years old when they all played in the Optimist World Junior Championship at the PGA National in 1999 at West Palm Beach. All three were members of Greywalls on 07, the states 2nd most difficult course in Michigan. The boys are the best golfers to come from the U.P. in a number of years. Michigan Open champion Scott Hebert, he has won it six times, has proved quality golfers can come from up north.

They have proven this month they can play with the best in the state at certain times. All three can see what they are really made of at the two biggest tournaments in Michigan in the next two weeks.

The three U.P. boys will play their practice round at 1:15pm on the Bear this Sunday.

TIME MAGAZINE GOES YOU TUBE, JUST AS GLSP DID A YEAR AGO
==========================================================
The You Tube phenomenon continues to grab the attention of various media entities, the latest entrant being being Time Magazine. In this week's issue, they reported that they are now putting their videos on You Tube. GLSP started this practice for our clients last May and it has provided another outlet for our work. Currently, GLSP creates video for our own online channels, now six in number: The Michigan Runner, The Michigan Skier, Michigan Travel, Running Canada, The Michigan Golfer and our latest channel, The Running Network. Collectively, we have produced close to 2,000 videos since we put up our first show in 2001. While our other channels provide more traffic for our clients, You Tube has made some steady gains. Here is some of the traffic for shows we have put up in the last year.

OOPS! PART XIV
===============
Art,
Just a quick note of clarification: Gaylord actually doesn't have the rights to use "america's summer golf capital". It is still the golf council's trademark which has only been licensed to the state.

Regards,
Steve Kircher

Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Steve Kircher of Boyne on this point. I also got my writing hand slapped from Kevin Frisch, of Golf and Resort Marketing as well. In a re-branding initiated last year, Gaylord is now going by the tag line of "America's Summer Golf Mecca".

The folks in the Petoskey area are saying that any participating hotel, inn, resort or condo, will give you a free night if you pay for three of them. It’s their way of saying, “Thanks for driving to northern Michigan.” Visit http://boynecountry.com for details.

They also say that when you come, bring your golf clubs, as Petoskey golf is as good as it gets.

MICHIGAN OPEN IS MOVING TO ORCHARD LAKE CC
============================================
The Michigan Open is moving. The 2009 and 2010 Michigan Opens, conducted by the Michigan Section of the PGA will be played at historic Orchard Lake Country Club in Orchard Lake, Michigan.

One of Michigan's longest running events; the Michigan Open began in 1916 and was won by Leo Diegel who also played in the inaugural Ryder Cup Match and Masters.

In recent years, The Michigan Open has been synonymous with Grand Traverse Resort and Spa in Acme, Michigan. The Resort has hosted the event for the past 27 years and watched it's prize purse and prestige grow along with the northern Michigan golf boom of the 1980's and 90's. The tournament has been played on the The Bear, a Jack Nicklaus designed course since 1985. An expanded field allowed the use of Grand Traverse Resort and Spa's, Wolverine Course, designed by Gary Player, the past two years.

"I've seen the past 20 of the 28 years Grand Traverse Resort and Spa has been host to the Michigan Open, and it has been a wonderful experience" said Tom McGee, the resort's Director of Golf Operations. "We've seen many changes through the years and have watched the Michigan Open grow into what has become a multi-course four-day event. The Resort's staff has always been very proud to host this event and showcase our incredible courses, conditions and service to the very best players in Michigan. We've enjoyed working with the Michigan PGA, the devoted volunteer corps, the media and everyone else involved with this golf championship. I am confident the Michigan Open will continue to be a successful event and we wish the Michigan PGA and all future sites the very best."

"The Michigan PGA is excited to announce that it has reached an agreement with Orchard Lake Country Club to host the 2009 and 2010 Michigan Open Championships presented by Lincoln Mercury," Michigan PGA Executive Director Kevin Helm said. Orchard Lake CC hosted the Michigan Open in 1944. That event was won by Sam Byrd, a PGA Tour player who also played professional baseball for the New York Yankees.

Helm added, "This move will certainly make it more convenient for a large number of Professionals and amateurs to participate. "The Detroit area provides a greater number of players the opportunity to play more affordably and to be closer to home and work. These elements along with an outstanding golf course should really generate a lot of interest and excitement for the Michigan Open."

SUMMER BUMMER
================
This year, as has been the case for the past decade or so, we have received the letter or email from Grand Traverse Resorts Public Relations Director, Mike DeAgostino, inviting us to yet again share one of Michigan's great golf events, The Michigan Open, at their magnificent facility. We relish this visit every year, as it gives us a chance to cover golf, in a more leisurely and orderly fashion. It also allows us the time to enjoy the up north experience and the magic of the Traverse City area.

The annual letter was tempered by the email from Kevin Helm, indicating that this year, will be the last Michigan Open held at Grand Traverse Resort for the foreseeable future.

This is the second of the big four golf tournaments that have gone "South" with the Michigan PGA Championship leaving Shanty Creek a couple of years ago. However, we still have two Michgian "Majors" with Tournament of Champions at Boyne and the Michigan PGA Women’s Open being held at Crystal Mountain.

Obviously, the absence of a major sponsor, in this case the Detroit Newspaper, has contributed to the decision to relocate the tournaments. While resorts benefit from the publicity of having a high profile tournament at their facility, it is still a costly venture, usually a break even effort at best. The need for title sponsors is vital to any tournament.

Okay, I will now stop my whinning.

JAC'S IS BACK
============
When I was a young man whose entire thinking process had turned to the opposite sex, I remembered how neat it would be to own one of those Nash Rambler with seats that folded down into a bed. Not only would it fold down into a bed, but you could buy one with window screens to keep out the bugs. It was, I thought at the time, the perfect date mobile. Jack Bott, the former owner of Marsh Ridge was the inventor of those screens and was also responsible for a lot of other car accessory inventions, many of them being outside car racks.

Jack Bott is a wonderful person who loved his time on the golf course. The hallway leading to Jac's Place, Marsh Ridge's restaurant, is covered with Jack Bott memorabilia of his pro-am tournaments, many with his favorite professional Johnny Miller. Bott bought Marsh Ridge after being approached by Mike Husby, who at the time had put together some investors to build the golf course.

Marsh Ridge, formerly known as Nordem Hem had spent its early days as a cross country resort and then joined with other Gaylord lodging entities in targeting the golfers who started coming north as the golf boom hit Gaylord. Husby was trying to get Bott to come in on the project as the original investors were tapped out. Bott, after having touring the new course, iindicated that he was interested, but only interested in buying out the existing partners and owning it himself. Bott, later purchased the old Torrey Pines and also bought it back to life as the Fenton Farms Golf Course.

Marsh Ridge has now been sold to Larry Bowden, who previously owned the Beaver Creek Resort and still owns The Natural Golf Course. A few years ago, he bought the lodging properties at Marsh Ridge and earlier this year, he completed the purchase of the golf course, clubhouse and the restaurant, Jac's Place.

Jac's Place, under the deft hand of former GM, Dick Weber, became one of the in places for dining in the Gaylord area. Weber created a terrific menu, brought in a knowledgeable chef and partnered that up with a beautiful view of the golf course.

And now, talk about burying the lead, Jac's Place is open once again. New owner, Larry Bowden's plans are to continue to keep the restaurant open during the winter Gaylord weekends, to serve his snowmobilers. We wish him luck with the new venture. It was old times having lunch at Jac's Place and once more looking out over their golf course.

KEVIN WHITMORE BRINGING NEW ENERGY TO THE GAYLORD COUNTRY CLUB
===================================================================
Prior to his selection as the new golf professional at the Gaylord Country, Kevin Whitmore worked at Shanty Creek and then took over as the PGA professional and GM at Red Hawk Golf Course near Tawas. http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/redhawk/

Since arriving at Gaylord GC, he has established the Kevin Whitmore Golf Academy as well as a number of events to create some interest for the younger golfers. Gaylord CC has over 200 members, but is one of those private clubs that allows outside play. Better yet, check out our interview with Whitmore at http://youtube.com/watch?v=j4xzw0P1Qfg

GENE BONE II TALKS ABOUT GENE BONE I
=====================================
We stopped by Treetops to see what is happening and got into a delightful conversation with Gene Bone II. Bone, who is now entering his third year at Treetops, absolutely loves his new community and the respite from downstate traffic. He indicated that we had just missed Rick Smith, who blew into town, gave a lesson to a new up and comer and then had to head out again. While Smith does not linger, there is thought that he may be spending more time at the resort.

Bone, a regular on Golf Digest's list of Top Michigan golf instructors, said that the Treetops Golf Academy and golf schools are filling up. His new "Couples" school http://www.treetops.com/index.php?method=golf&subpage=ladiesgolfschool to be held August 3 - 6 and August 10 - 13 are almost sold out.

While in his office, Bone pulled out some photos and newspaper articles about his dad, Gene Bone, who is a class of 1998 Michigan Hall of Fame member, tour player and still active golf instructor at Baypoint Golf Club, where he was the club professional for many years. The Michigan PGA Media Guide has the senior Bone's name all through the book. Bone at one time or another has won every event sponsored by the Michigan PGA. He was twice Michigan Open Champion and the Michigan PGA Champion.

While I knew some of that, I was surprised to learn that he was also the golf professional at Warwick Hills CC, home of the Buick Open. The photos of Gene Bone in his heyday and revelation of his Warwick Hills days, prompted a quick call to Jack Berry to schedule an interview for our Michigan Golfer cameras. Stayed tuned.

BOOK REVIEW; "THE MATCH-THE DAY THE GAME OF GOLF CHANGED FOREVER" By Art McCafferty
====================================================================================
We first met Mark Frost when he came to Birmingham to assist in the promotion of the Bill Paxton directed movie of his book, "The Greatest Game Ever Played". The film, which was well received by the golf audience, did not catch on with the majority of Americas and did a modest total of $15 million domestic gross with another eight million on rentals.

His latest, "The Match", will no doubt be another book that will either be made into a movie for general release or something the Golf Channel might be interested in. The book is a riveting read.

"The Match" centers around a match of two amateurs, Ken Venturi and Harvie Ward with two of the top professionals at the time, Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan. Added to this mix was the matchmaker, Ed Lowery, who in his younger days served as the caddie for Francis Quimet when he won that U.S. Open that made them both famous. The prior venue was at Brookline CC in Massachusetts, this story revolved around the storied Cypress Point Golf Club.

Frost has done a substantial amount of research for the book, interviewing many golfers, both Ken Venturi and Byron Nelson andmembers of the families of Ward and Hogan.

The interplay between the foursome during the match is compelling reading and provides awonderful addition to our golf history.

However, in addition to the match, Frost also fleshes out the story of the builiding of Cypress Point, an Alister MacKenzie course, that was heavily influenced by one of golf's early women pioneers, Marion Hollins. Hollins put together the money to purchase Cypress Point and also began dialogue with Alister MacKenzie after the death of Seth Raynor, who been the first architect to be hired for the job.

MacKenzie, submitted his design and then returned to England, all the while feeling the course, because of the unique terrain and routing, would be too difficult for members and thus provoke their rath. "MacKenzie's concerns that the members of Cypress Point would find his golf course too difficult proved unfounded. Unable to be present at the opening--and used to having what he considered his best work savaged by the average duffer--he was alarmed when Hunter cabled him that not a single discouraging word had been uttered. From the moment the opening drive was struck, critics raved that Cypress Point was the greatest golf course ever built in the Unites States. It wasn't until he returned to tweak the finished product himself in November of 1928 that MacKenzie realized why; People were too busy gasping in astonishment at its beauty to care how they played. The hand of man had so artfully improved on the raw materials of nature that no one could tell where the work of one ended and the other began and it took everyone's breath away."

The book is published by Hyperion http://hyperion.com
