MICHIGAN GOLFER'S "SPRUMMER" ISSUE
SPECIAL EDITION: BUICK OPEN 50 YEARS
http://michigangolfer.com/spring08/
===================================
We start our celebration of the the 50th year of the Buick Open by offering both our readers and viewers, this package of golf lore goodies. We looked into "The Vault" of Michigan Golfer copy, photo and video assets and and have taken the additional time to put this together. We also unite " A Pair of Jacks" in this issue. In the first golf summit held at EMU, Jack Berry and Jack Saylor dressed to the nines, in tuxedos, waxed on about golf in Michigan. Here we take a timeless article the Saylor wrote on the 10 Most Memorable Buick Open Players. We pair that up with a piece on Warwick Hills pro, Nick Berklich, by Jack Berry. Berry also brings us up to date with new piece, 50 Years of the Buick Open. I had the opportunity to chime in with a short piece on Gene Bone, one of my childhood heroes. Finally, Terry Moore wraps up this issue with his always provocative thoughts in his "Slice of Life', column. While the number of stories are small the photographs that support them are not. The Internet allows you to run as many photos as you would like and we have some dandies.

Added to this mix, is a couple of videos, one on Gene Bone and his recollections of the first Buick Open, when he was the Warwick pro and later Buick Opens that he won. Bone had a wonderful career in Michigan golf as he won almost everything in sight. The second video in our print, photographs and video Michigan Golfer issue, is one we did with Ken Devine. Devine was a salesperson and a lover of golf, when he attended the first Buick Open. He was later to go on and rescue the Michigan PGA Section after the association had been wiped out but a former COO that had a gambling problem. Devine served many years at the helm of the Michigan PGA Section and watched it shed its debt and become prosperous under his leadership.

MICHIGAN OPEN PRESENTED BY LINCOLN MERCURY ----TELEVISED DAILY BY THE MICHIGAN GOLFER

TOM GILLIS WINS HIS SECOND MICHIGAN OPEN

=============================================================================================
We thought we would make the last Michigan Open held at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa special by creating a daily show for each round. Tim Hygh and Mike Shiels helped us out and for that we are grateful. So rather than us going into a lengthy dissetration about what went on, click away and find out.

Our shows cover the past and present, the volunteers, a Randy Erskine interview, the new champion, Tom Gillis and some friendly goodbyes to a tournament that has been there for 28 years. Enjoy. Congrats Tom Gillis.

MICHIGAN GOLFER ON THE ROAD
=============================
Grand Traverse Village- We were at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa covering the Michigan Open for the last time. The resort, per one of their tag lines, has its splendor back. The place looks incredible, almost brand new again. The entire lobby went through a face lift that Joan Rivers would be proud of. And the beds are unbelievable . It feels like you are spending all of your sleeping moments in a pillow factory. Great stuff.

We had the opportunity to visit an old friend Lockenheath Golf Course while here. Lockenheath has been targeted toward the private golf club sector, although at times the public has been allowed in. I was first introduced to the course by Doug Grove, who had experience in opening many clubs, The Bear included. At that time he was busy as the whole infrastructure was going in and he was in charge. However, we drove some of the course and he regaled me with Steve Smyers lore. Smyers, has a classical design phliosophy, in that he is a firm believer in the risk-reward strategy in designing golf course. I have but seen two of his courses, Lockenheath and the Heartland Crossings in Indiana. My general feeling in both cases, that there was more risk than reward.

Headquartered in Lakeland, Florida, Smyers Golf, has done much of its work in Indiana and Florida, New Jersey, with some foreign forays into England and Australia.

Lockenheath, now being managed by Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, has given the resort the one missing piece in their holdings, a golf course on the water. Years ago, that had purchased some land on the water and thought about building there. They even had brought up Lee Trevino, before the economy turned sour on golf course construction. While they are only in a one year deal for managing the course, it would be sweet, if they could permanently add this to their inventory and create an enviable foursome of courses.

We captured some video of the course and you can see it in our third round coverage of the Michigan Open
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGwriDu1uwA It is as tough as it is beautiful.

***
Litchfield-Jenkins Golf Course
The Jenkins is a nine hole course that was opened in 1964. The architect for this little gem was Jerry Matthews. It is a typical farm course, in that there is very little trouble for golfers to wander into. There are no traps or water hazards to speak of although there are some trees here and there.

***
Manistee- Manistee National Golf Resort
You cannot help thinking about Manistee National as you head up the Western part of the state, as Travel Michigan has purchased a number of billboards that feature this beautiful golf destination. Doug Bell was on hand to say hi and was lamenting about the late summer and the impact that that has had on an already difficult economy. A late west coast freeze hurt some orchards and the cold spring has kept the bees from pollinating as they robustly as they normally do.

The leaves were finally out and the courses looked beautiful. Cutter's Ridge is a Jerry Matthews course and Matthews is on hand to give you a tour, if you have not been there before http://youtube.com/watch?v=9gpkp83VAzc The second course, Canthook Valley is the other course on the property. The Osprey flag waves happily in a West coast breeze to welcome golfers to a very special destination.

***
Rothbury -Double JJ Ranch and the Thorourbred
Whoa Nellie. Keith Jackson's signature call, would be right at home here as the dynamic duo of Joan and Bob Lipsitz have grown this property into something that is really special. The last time we were there we were exploring the addition of the Back Forty. The Back Forty was an assembly of shops surrounding their rodeo grounds. This time we checked out their new waterpark and looked at the plans of their new conference center development. The Lipsitz's have always been focused on their business and it is astonishing to see what they have accomplished.

We visited the proshop and found Golf Professional Andy Meikle and his assistant, Justin Durga. The course looked spectacular. Built 15 years ago under the eye of Arthur Hills, the course has matured into a force on the west side of the state.

But wait, there is more. The resort also hosts the Rothbury Festival, which will bring 100 bands into their town during the summer. It seems like there is something for everybody at the Double JJ Ranch.

***
Whitehall-Montague- Old Channel Trail
We thought we would drop by and see the latest Michigan Golf Hall of Fame inductee, Meriam Leeke. Old Channel Trail is unique in Michigan in that you have three different nine hole golf courses representing three different generations. The first course was designed by Robert Harris, the second by W. Bruce Matthews and the third by his son, Jerry Matthews. The Harris course features some interesting grass bunkers sprinkled into many fairways. The W. Bruce Matthews course features his philosophy of low maintenance and straight forward golf. Finally, the Jerry Matthews course features more mature bunkering and a more sophisticated routing of the course.

EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT GOLF ROUNDS PLAYED
============================================================
Rounds played in the U.S. rose 2.5% in April 2008 versus April 2007, according to the National Golf Foundation. Rounds played for the first four months of 2007 turned positive, rising to 0.9%.

Through March, rounds had been down 3.5%. The reporting is based on data from operators at more than 1,800 golf facilities. For the full year 2007, rounds played were down 0.5%; in 2006, they had been up 0.8%.

Year-to-date, the Northeast outshines all other regions - up 28.6%. Next closest was the South Central region, up 4.0%. Biggest loser was the Midwest. The Upper Midwest was down 18.2%; the Lower Midwest, down 11.0%.The Mountain region fell 9.1% and the Northwest, 8.3%.

For the four months, play at premium public courses (those with peak season weekend green fees with cart above $70) was up 0.8%. At value courses (those with peak season weekend green fees with cart below $40), rounds played dropped 2.6%. At standard courses ($40-70), play was down 0.7%. Overall, rounds played at all public courses fell 1.3%.

Private courses faired slightly better, with rounds played up 0.4% for the four months.

Golf Datatech's monthly report found rounds played in April were up 2.2% compared to April 2007 and down -0.6% year to date. The Golf Datatech report represents 3,855 reporting courses.
With Golf Playable Hours (GPH) posting an 1% decrease in May after an April 11% increase, year-to-date GPH remain 1% behind the same period last year, according to Pellucid Corp.

Using Pellucid's regional definitions, 12 regions saw increases of 2% or greater in GPH for the year-to-date (YTD) compared to 24 showing decreases of 2% or more. Rounding out the picture were nine regions in the neutral zone (+/-2% vs. a year ago). This creates a negative breadth ratio of 2:1.

Looking back at April's weather results versus Golf Datatech's recently released rounds results, the industry registered a 48% Utilization Rate for the month compared to the 2007 national benchmark of 52%. For the first four months the national Utilization Rate rests at 52%, identical to the 2007 benchmark..

The Grand Traverse Resort & Spa has been the home for many of Michigan's great golf tournaments, 28 years of the Michigan Open, two years of the Native American Cup and a Senior Tournament a number of years ago. What does a resort due after that run? According to Steve Timmer, the Marketing Director for the resort, the focus will continue to remain on creating a world class environment for the golfer.

"MAN, YOU NEED A WEED WHACKER GOLF CLUB"
============================================
Every year, there are hundreds of new products targeting the golf market. Many of them find this newsletter and ask for us to pass on the wonderfulness of these products to our readers. We normally say no thanks and move on. However, once an a while a product comes along that does grab out attention. This is one of them....so que the spokesperson.

***
(Phoenix, Arizona) – It’s a golf club accessory that is sure to help any golfer “cut back” on the course. And it is a fun product that may soon be in every golf bag – and every garage – across the world. Built to resemble a typical oversized head driver, The Big Daddy Driver is actually a fully functioninggrass and weed trimmer. The growing popularity of the Big Daddy Club is creating laughter from the tee to the fairway to the clubhouse – and beyond.

The idea for the Big Daddy Weed Whacker Golf Club came when company President John Buell was on the course one challenging day. His playing partner’s ball had found the rough on the majority of the drives. Buell joked to his friend, “Man, you need a weed whacker golf club.” Little did they know the significance of that joke. “The light bulb went off in our heads and the idea of Weed Whacker Golf Club was born,” says Buell.

The Big Daddy Driver sells for $49.95 and is available at: www.bigdaddydriver.com For more information,

FUND RAISING IDEA-BILL KNOOP
=============================
Art.... here is an idea that perhaps other golfing groups may wish to implement that will allow them to enjoy the game we all love, and to "pay it forward" in the process..

We (31 Trenton High Alums + 1 Wyandotte) just returned from Garland Resort, where we held our annual "Federico Cup" tournament, which is played in a Ryder cup format. The winning team members get their names inscribed on the Trophy, which, similiar to the Stanley Cup, is "loaned" to each member for a couple days to show off to their friends and family, before it is returned for display in the THS tropy case.

The tournament slogan, "Its all about the tropy", reflects the competitive nature of the event that occurs among the graduates* and former athletes from Trenton.

But the real winners are the members of the Trenton High Golf team members. In past years, one member from the team has been awarded a college scholarship, while this coming season, the entire team will be the recipients of new golf bags purchased from the funds we raised through generous donations to our silent auction.

FATHER'S DAY REFLECTIONS AT THE SEASON'S FINAL MAJOR
======================================================
With Father's Day fast approaching, and the 90th PGA Championship a little more than two months away, now is the time to reflect upon how four sons of PGA Professionals left their own mark by winning a major championship.

Jack Burke Jr. -- The son of Jack Burke Sr. captured the 38th PGA Championship on July 24, 1956, at Blue Hill Golf & Country Club in Canton, Mass. It marked a momentous year for Burke, who won the Masters in April and the PGA Player of the Year award.
Burke's father, who captured the 1941 Senior PGA Championship when Jack Jr. was 18, never lived to see his son win a major championship. He passed away when Jack Jr. was serving in the Marines during World War II.

"I think about my dad every day," said Burke Jr. "He was a great person, raising eight kids and was an excellent teacher. He was my inspiration in the game, and I had asthma as a youngster and would sit and watching him teach all day long. He would have a drill about throwing the club at the end of the swing to get a student to finish high. Well, I would run and catch those clubs he threw."

Dave Marr II -- The son of a Houston golf professional by the same name, Dave Marr was 31 years old when he defeated golf legends Jack Nicklaus and Billy Casper by two strokes to win the 47th PGA Championship, Aug. 15, 1965, at Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pa. That was not the biggest news of the day, however, for the Marr family. A few hours after Marr's victory, his third child, son Tony, was born.

Dave Marr went on to play on a U.S. Ryder Cup Team and win PGA Player of the Year honors the same year, and captain a winning Ryder Cup Team (1981). In Marr's second career, he was a popular golf analyst for ABC Sports. Marr died of cancer at the age of 63 in 1997, but not before relating how he would want to be remembered.

Davis Love III -- The son of the late Davis Love II, a renowned player-teacher, Davis III was molded for success in the game by a father who many regarded as one of the finest instructors of his era. Davis II perished in a 1988 plane crash.

On Aug. 17, 1997, a day that was marked by intermittent showers over the East Course at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., Davis III captured the 79th PGA Championship. There were many misty eyes as golf fans witnessed a victory moment framed for the ages -- Love holed a birdie putt, pulled his visor off in celebration and at the same moment, a brilliant rainbow broke overhead.

Rich Beem -- The son of Larry Beem, a former New Mexico State University golf coach (1998-2004), Rich is best remembered for the manner in which he withstood a Sunday charge by Tiger Woods to win the 84th PGA Championship, Aug. 17, 2002, at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. Larry Beem was not in Minnesota to witness his son's feat. He was in front of his television set at home in Las Cruces, N.M.

"I remember the day well, and I damn near wore out the carpet in front of the television," said Larry. "I also smoked enough cigarettes to last a lifetime. It was a great time for us, of course. Larry said that he enjoys the fact that Rich is the father of two children today.
