Chelsea - Pierce Lake Golf Club
The home of Michigan pitchman and actor, Jeff Daniels, Pierce Lake GC has been a town favorite since it opened in 1996. As Susan Bairley stated in her review. "Few courses offer spectacular starting holes, but one that cuts right to the chase is Pierce Lake Golf Course in Chelsea. With its broad fairway, towering trees and large, well-bunkered, elevated green, the 347-yard first hole welcomes you to the course with incredible majesty. We dropped by for Wednesday's Pro-Am to catch the John Daly and Kid Rock twosome. They were, as you might suspect, dressed to the three's. This dandy duo were great crowd pleasers at Warwick and the lead photo story for most of Thursday's Michigan's dailies.

A couple of years ago, we did a show of John Daly trying to drive a ball over Niagara Falls. He was there to open his new Thundering Waters course, at nearby Canadian casino. It was bedlam there as Daly showed up with his cast of Hooters these Canadians also love this guy. It was a good weekend for Michiganders on the various golf circuits. Leading the list must be Grand Traverse Resort & Spa's Scott Hebert winning the PGA Professional National Championship at Reynolds Plantation, GA. The six-time Michigan Open champion became the fourth Michigan club pro to take home the prestigious title, joining Buddy Whitten, John Traub and JR Roth. Hebert automatically qualified for the PGA Championship at Oakland Hills as did Crystal Mountain's Brad Dean who finished in the top 20.

In an equally impressive victory, Muskegon's Brendan Gielow won the highly respected Northeast Amateur at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rhode Island.

Canning a birdie putt on the final hole, the Wake Forest junior established a new tournament record with his 9-under 267 total, topping the old mark held by John Cook (1979), Luke Donald (2000), and Kyle Reifers (2005). Gielow was also the first player in the event's 47-year-old history to card four subpar rounds—68-66-67-66. As quoted by Golfweek's Ron Balicki, Gielow said, "It's been three or four years since I won a tournament. It feels like it's been forever."

Meanwhile Marshall's John Morse had another excellent Champions Tour event at Concord, MA for the Bank of America Championship. Putting together rounds of 67-70-71, the 50-year-old Morse finished T-7th and earned $50,325. The former UM player and Hawaiian Open champion garnered some nice Golf Channel coverage over the weekend, even drawing praise from analyst John Jacobs saying Morse "will be a force on this Tour." Morse now has had consecutive top ten finishes and earned a total of $109,000. The next Tour for Morse is this weekend's Commerce Bank Championship on Long Island, NY.

And speaking of Michigan natives, you can catch several of them today and hopefully this weekend at the Buick Open. Qualifying on Monday were Grosse Ile's Jeff Cuzzort (67) and Grand Rapids' Matt Harmon (66.) Both are now mini-Tour players. Reigning Michigan Open champion Tom Gillis, Oxford, is also in the Buick field as is Scott Hebert.

FROM THE VAULT: 10 MOST MEMORABLE PLAYERS AT THE BUICK OPEN By Jack Saylor

1. Tony Lema, 1964. A latter-day Walter Hagen, who exuded good cheer and appreciated a good victory and was willing to share. Champagne corks popped in the press room, a nickname was celebrated and, best of all, he won again in ‘65. Alas, he left us far too soon.

2. Peter Jacobsen, 1980. It may have been the hybrid Buick-Goodwrench, but didn’t lessen the impact on this talented, friendly competitor. The lasting memory was Jake holding month-old daughter Amy with one arm while accepting the trophy as Amy barfed all over Daddy’s shirt.

3. Hale Irwin, 1981. Although he usually prevailed on more difficult tracks (i.e. three U.S. Opens, two Memorials, etc.), this all-time great showed he could go birdie-to-birdie in a shoot out, too. He emerged from one of the tightest Buick finishes from a four-way playoff with defending champion Jacobsen, Gil Morgan and Bobby Clampett.

4. Ben Crenshaw, 1986. Scored a popular victory by pulling off one of the best shots in Buick history. At the short, par-five 13th, where a par usually lost you ground to the field, his second shot nestled against the trunk on the wrong side of a little pine tree for the right-handed Crenshaw. No problemo. Gentle Ben turned lefty, flipped his wedge to the reverse side and popped a shot within a couple of feet to save his birdie—and perhaps the title.

5. Robert Wrenn, 1987. This likeable Virginian picked Warwick Hills for his “15 minutes of fame,” which lasted a torrid four days in which shot an unBelievable 26-under par 262 and missing tying Ben Hogan’s record by a Sunday bogey at No. 14, one of the very easiest holes. The victory touched off seven financial-productive years, but no more wins before he exchanged clubs for microphone.

6. Julius Boros, 1963. Nobody tired of watching Big Jay’s rhythmic, easy-going, smooth swing, wondering how he generated such power, plus the equally effective work around and on the greens. A giant of the era, he beat perennial runnerup Dow Finsterwald by one shot. He loved fishing the ponds in his spare time so he returned and won again in ‘67.

7. Dave Hill, 1969. One of the hardest workers and greatest strikers of the ball ever to trod the tour, Peck’s Bad Boy avenged brother Mike Hill’s loss of 1968 (to Tom Weiskopf), with a fine 11-under 277 that put him in the books as the last Buick Open champ as management pulled the plug on the event until cooler heads thankfully prevailed nine years later.

8. Fred Couples, 1994. Coming to Warwick after a long layoff and fighting back problems, Couples seemed like a poor bet even to make the cut. But with his lazy, effortless Boros-like swing style, Couples ignored inclement weather, even endured a 36-hole day and won going away with a blazing 18-under 270.

9. Chip Beck, 1990. Never altering his smile whether making birdie or double-bogey and had the groove this week to win another exciting four-man playoff with another fan favorite, Fuzzy Zoeller, along with U.S. Open playoff rivals that year, Hale Irwin and Mike Donald. The company liked Beck, too, and signed him as a Buick spokesman.

10. Billy Casper, 1958. There was more chalk lines on Warwick Hills than on the local football field to mark unplayable, free-drop areas on the new and quite rough golf course, but the $100,000 purse was crisp (Sam Snead said they’d play down Woodward Ave. for that money). The field was classy and so was the winner as Buffalo Billy nicked Arnold Palmer, along with Ted Kross, by one shot. It started a great Michigan tradition.

SCOTT HEBERT LEADS 20-PLAYER DELEGATION TO BERTHS IN THE 90th PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

PGA Professional National Champion Scott Hebert of Traverse City, Mich., a PGA head professional at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa in Acme, Mich., will lead a group of 20 PGA Professionals earning berths in the 90th PGA Championship, Aug. 4-10, at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich.

Hebert, 39, will be competing in his second consecutive PGA Championship. He captured his first national title June 22, with a final-round 4-under-par 68 for a 12-under-par 276 total in the 41st PGA Professional National Championship at Great Waters in Lake Oconee, Ga.The 41st PGA Professional National Championship was presented by Titleist, FootJoy and Cobra; Buick; and Club Car, and featured a total purse of $550,000.

NGF PERSPECTIVE ON MUNICIPAL GOLF
========================
The June 14, 2008, issue of Golfweek magazine contained a series of stories regarding municipal golf, prompted in part by the playing of the 108th U.S. open at Torrey Pines Golf Course, a municipal facility. NGF contributed to the article with interviews and data.

NGF's municipal golf expertise results from working with hundreds of municipalities to help them improve existing golf operations or to make informed decisions regarding new course feasibility and development. Recent clients include the cities of San Francisco, San Diego, New York, Houston, San Antonio, Palm Springs, and Portland, Ore., as well as Nassau County, N.Y., and the state of West Virginia. Following are some key points of NGF's perspective on munis:

The dramatic increase in daily fee courses over the past 15 to 20 years has made it more difficult for municipal golf operations to turn a profit, especially as many daily fee courses have discounted their green fees. At the same time, most municipal golf systems have experienced rapidly increasing operating expenses. And, many municipal governments are hampered by a cumbersome bureaucracy with respect to hiring/firing, procurement, pricing, etc.
The cost of producing a round of golf at municipal golf facilities is typically much higher than the cost at comparable, or even superior, daily fee facilities, largely due to the relatively high cost of public labor (often unionized, and with generous benefit packages).
A pervasive issue that makes it more difficult for municipalities to maximize revenues and compete effectively is the entitlement culture that is prevalent at many municipal golf courses (deep discounting of green fees for residents and seniors, etc.).
Due to these and other issues, many municipalities have gone from a situation in which the golf operation was contributing positively to the general fund, to a position of requiring support from taxpayers to meet operational and capital/debt service requirements. Additionally, municipal golf managers are forced to make operations leaner, which typically results in deferred maintenance and capital improvements. This belt tightening, in turn, results in a deteriorating product and further reduction in market share and revenues.
Due to these factors, NGF expects that either partially or completely privatizing operations (e.g., third party manager/lessee, maintenance-only contracts) will become an increasingly common strategy to reverse failing municipal golf courses.

DEAN QUALIFIES FOR 2008 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

Crystal Mountain Director of Golf Brad Dean will be playing in his first major during the 2008 PGA Championship to be hosted by Oakland Hills Country Club, August 7-10. Dean earned a spot in the PGA Tour’s final major of the year with a top-15 finish during this past weekend’s PGA Club Professionals National Championship at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Georgia. Dean, who finished four-rounds at 2-under-par (70-72-71-73 = 286), is among 20 players earning spots in the PGA Championship and one of two from the state of Michigan.

PGA Tour Buick Open Trivia and Notes:

As noted above, the Buick Open has been played since 1958, but in a few years was not an official PGA Tour tournament. In 1970-71, no tournament was played. The Buick Open returned in 1972, but was not part of the PGA Tour from 1972-76. In 1977, it returned to the PGA Tour schedule and has been part of that schedule ever since.

In the first round of the 1987 tournament, Dewey Arnette tied the PGA Tour record for most consecutive birdies with eight in a row. Too bad for Arnette that Robert Wrenn was busy setting the 72-hole tournament scoring record en route to victory that year.

When Chip Beck won in 1990, he started the fourth round eight strokes off the lead. That makes it one of the biggest final-round comebacks in Tour history.

And another great scoring performance: Billy Mayfair shot 27 on the back nine in his final round at the 2001 Buick Open. That ties for second-best on the PGA Tour's list of lowest 9-hole scores.

Tiger Woods holds the PGA Tour record for most consecutive cuts made, and his streak of 142 straight began at the 1998 Buick Open.

Billy Casper won the first Buick Open in 1958.

Tony Lema was the first two-time winner and first back-to-back winner with victories in 1964-65.

Vijay Singh holds the tournament record with three wins total. He is also the only other golfer to win this event in consecutive years.

Tiger Woods and Julius Boros are the only other multiple winners of the Buick Open.

GOLF EQUIPMENT SALES UPDATE

Full-line sporting goods stores and Internet retailers have increased their respective shares of sales of golf clubs sold in sets, which account for approximately half of the $3.8 billion U.S. golf equipment market. According to the just-released "Sporting Goods Market in 2008," published annually for nearly 30 years by the National Sporting Goods Association (NSGA), full-line sporting goods stores accounted for nearly a third (32.7%) of sales of clubs sold in sets in 2007, while Internet sales have more than doubled in the last five years to 16.5%.

In 2007, sales of clubs in sets reached nearly $1.9 billion, a 6% increase compared to 2006. This is double the next largest golf equipment category, golf balls, which accounted for $951.5 million in 2007.

Comparing the 2007 market share figures to 2002, full-line sporting goods stores increased from 24.5% of sales in 2002 to 32.7% last year. Unit sales at sporting goods stores increased from 30.5% in 2002 to 38.5% in 2007.

Internet sales of clubs sold in sets jumped from 7.0% in 2002 to 16.5% in 2007, and units doubled from 7.4% to 14.8% in that same period.

During that five-year period, sales at off-course golf shops were stagnant. In dollars, off course golf shops increased their share from 22.0% in 2002 to 22.3% in 2007, and the units remained at 17.4% in both years.

Pro shops took the hardest hit among the four primary sources of golf clubs sold in sets. In 2002, pro shops accounted for 31.5% of sales of clubs in sets but just 21.1% in 2007. In units, the percentage fell from 20.5% in 2002 to 17.6% last year.

CRAIG BARLOW SETS NEW FIELDSTONE RECORD!: By Thad Gutowski

When you spend ten years on the PGA Tour and win over $5,000,000, you know that you can play the game. And yesterday, Craig Barlow proved it when he set a new course record by posting a sizzling 63 at the Buick Open qualifying round at Fieldstone Golf Club of Auburn Hills.

A native of Henderson, Nevada, Barlow has a distinguished resume' as a seasoned golf professional. Along with his enviable achievment at Fieldstone, he holds the record at another ten or so courses, mostly in the Western United States. But last year he failed to maintain his position in the top 125 money winners on the Tour, and as a result lost his card. When asked what happened, he was quick to respond: "My attitude changed!" So now he must go through the difficult process of qualifying on the Monday prior to the weekly PGA Tour, and then win enough money to get back into the 125 top performers. In the event this fails, it is back to the incredibly grueling "Q School" later this year. But in our conversation it was most obvious that he has regained that winning attitude to get what he is looking for. He said, "One doesn't appreciate the thrill of victory, if they have not experienced the agony of defeat!"

Three other contestants in the Fieldstone field will be making the trip to Grand Blanc this coming week-end: San Diego's Jake Roos who posted a 65; Matt Harmon of Grand Blanc with a 66; and Jeff Cussort of Grosse Ille 67, who won a one-hole sudden play-off with Tom Byrum of Sugarland, Texas, another former PGA Tour player.

Fieldstone again received rave reviews from many in the field that obviously have teed-it-up on countless courses around the world. All said Fieldstone was "tough, but fair," and were impressed with its outstanding condition. Mr. Mike Shay, Senior Rules Director from the national PGA office said, "We have a long standing arrangement with Fieldstone. We know the course and conditions will be Tour-Quality and that the contestants will be impressed with what they find here. We have held the Buick Open qualifying round at Fieldstone for nine years, and look forward to many more."

MICHIGAN GOLF WEEKLY ON HIATUS

Jeff Lesson informed us that his show, Michigan Golf Weekly, that has played on the local CBS affiliate for the past few years will not be on this year.this year. He did indicate that he will be hosting a total of three half hour PGA Championship preview shows as well as six five minute local wrap up shows from Oakland Hills on CBS Detroit TV.

JIMMY CHESTNUT TAKES MICHIGAN AMATEUR

PORTAGE – Surrounded by a near-record crowd of friends, family and his college teammate as his caddie, Jimmy Chestnut (Grand Blanc) won the 97th Michigan Amateur 4&2 over 2007 runner-up Steve Cuzzort (Grosse Ile).

Chestnut took control of the match right out of the shoot by going 1 up on the first hole and never looked back. When asked about his thoughts on the first tee as he started the finals, Chestnut replied, “I came here to win and I need to finish the deal.”
“He (Cuzzort) has won every Michigan amateur tournament there is, so I knew he would come back and square up the match. I really wanted to win this championship, it’s the most important tournament in the state. You feel like a king for a week. The names on the trophy are a who’s who of golf, like Chuck Kocsis.”

By winning the Michigan Amateur, Chestnut receives an automatic five-year exemption into the Michigan Amateur Championship, as well as The Western Amateur, Susquehana Amateur in Pennsylvania, the Michigan Open and the GAM Championship.
Cuzzort, who was the 2007 GAM Champion said, “it’s a grind of a week, to come up short really sucks.”

“He (Chestnut) took advantage of opportunities and I didn’t, he’s a great guy.”

KID ROCK BACK TO ROCK BOYNE MOUNTAIN

BLAKE ENGLISH, SHANNON WARNER CAPTURE 2008 MICHIGAN PGA JUNIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

Blake English of Charlotte, Michigan and Shannon Warner of Livonia, Michigan won the 2008 Michigan Junior PGA Championship Friday, June 25, at Bedford Valley Golf Club in Battle Creek, Michigan.

By winning the boys’ and girls’ divisions respectively, English and Warner qualified for the 33rd Junior PGA Championship, August 13-16, 2008, at TPC River’s Bend in Cincinnati, Ohio.

English, 17, posted a final-round 66 (-6) for a two-day total of 131 (-13) and a 9-stroke victory over Jared Dalga of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Blake will be an upcoming senior at Charlotte High School and is the son of PGA Professional, Ron English.

Shannon Warner, 17, had a final-round 79 (+7) for a two-day total of 155 (+11) and a 5-stroke victory over Joan Dulieu of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Shannon is a recent graduate of Livonia Churchill and will be attending Michigan State University this fall on a golf scholarship.
