MICHIGAN GOLF LEGEND CHET JAWOR DIES OF HEART FAILURE
By Jack Berry
Chet Jawor never played on the PGA Tour or in the many tournaments sponsored by the Michigan Section of the Professional Golfers Association but Jawor left an indelible mark on public golf in southeast Michigan as a tireless promoter of the game.

Jawor, 76, passed away May 29 of heart failure. He was one of five brothers who became PGA professionals, one of the largest golfing families in the country. Frank, a former president of the Michigan PGA and longtime professional at Warren Valley Golf Course; Stan, the 1976 and 1981 Michigan PGA Senior champion; Cass, who played on both the PGA Tour and Senior PGA Tour and twice won the state PGA Senior championship, and John, owner of Wynd Ridge Oaks Golf Course, survive him. He also is survived by sisters Helen Whited and Wanda.

The Jawors were a large family - 11 children - on the west side of Detroit and the boys learned golf as caddies. Chet not only learned to play golf, he learned to cook from his mother. In later years, especially at his golf store and range on Gratiot and 14 Mile Rd. in Roseville, recognizable by the big flying pink elephant above the miniature course, Chet often had big pots of food cooking in the back room for his staff and some steady customers. On Dec. 24 he always had a big spread, featuring a lot of Polish sausage and other delicacies, for friends and customers.

But golf always was the main event, during the time he served as Head Professional for Detroit's six municipal courses in the 1960s and then at Jawor's Gratiot Golf which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2003.

Rackham Golf Course was Jawor's headquarters when he was the head city pro and it was the place to meet and play for many of the area's top athletes and media types, both broadcast and print. It was the same at Gratiot Golf where you'd bump into local judges, doctors, politicians and many private club members.

While Chet was a deadly chipper and putter, his best game was promoting golf and he did it through golf schools for juniors with the Detroit Free Press, for women with the Detroit Times and for everyone with the Detroit News spring golf schools. Among the junior golf school alumni are Joyce Kazmierski, an All-American at Michigan State, then an LPGA Tour player and eventual LPGA president who was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame last year, Bob Proben, who played the PGA Tour, and Janina Parrot Jacobs who is one of the leading women amateurs in the state.

The junior schools were held at all six Detroit municipal courses and youngsters who attended all of the lessons were permitted to play on mornings the rest of the summer for 25 cents. Thousands of youngsters picked up the game through those schools and when a PGA Tour event was in town during the schools, Jawor would get stars like Mike Souchak and Gene Littler out to talk to the juniors.

During winter he had indoor schools where golfers hit into nets. At the range in the summer he'd often meander along the tee line and give a tip here and there to someone struggling with his or her swing. Jawor was an innovative marketer long before the days of the big-box golf stores. And because he always was there to chat and explain new clubs, not out playing tournaments, his business flourished and he was one of the biggest sellers of golf equipment in the state. Golfers flocked to his range because the balls always were the best, not the hacked-up, bruised balls many of his competitors used.

Jawor rejected offers from developers to sell his busy property and up to the end, he was at the shop, sitting in a corner of the shoe section, talking with salesmen and old friends, and answering the telephone while his son, Don, and the staff of longtime employes was up front working with customers.

MGN ON THE ROAD
Alanson
We caught up with Bob Shorter of Eagle Beach GC in Alanson to check out the Larry Mancour designed course that opened late in 2002. Larry also designed Chestnut Valley and Dunmaglas. Shorter said that real estate lots on Eagle Beach were moving as good as could be expected, considering the slow economy. Currently Eagle Beach is nine holes with nine more on the drawing board. Eagle Beach is a little tough to find, so you will most likely have to go to an Internet map.

Ann Arbor
The Wednesday kick-off party for the Bank of Ann Arbor Futures Golf Classic, was very well attended despite threatening skies. On Thursday, ABC sportscaster and friend of the tournament, Mike Tirico and his wife Debbie, who is the Honorary Chairman of the event, played in the Pro/Am. Today the Bank of Ann Arbor Futures Golf Classic fires up for its 4th edition. Tournament Director, Gilda Johnson, has worked very hard on to grow this tournament and make it the success that it is. Mary Kerr of the Ann Arbor CVB was in the guest and sponsor mix. She indicated that events such as this, has made Ann Arbor into a hot spot of sports related events for visitors.

Boyne
The "Countdown to Opening Celebration" for the Avalanche Bay & Mountain Grand Lodge at Boyne Mountain was held last week. MGN stopped by ahead of the festivities, but we feel the year long celebration will be worth it. It is an exciting project and will offer yet another reason to visit the North country. For up to date info, visit http://boyne.com

Dearborn
Craig Stadler was the guest speaker at the Ford Seniors Players Championship Media Day this past week. The trip to Dearborn was all set up to be eagles and birdies for Stadler. It was here where he got the first of two wins, one in the Champions Tour and then a week later in the BC Open, to enable him to become the first professional to win a tournament in each tour in the same year. However, the visit to Dearborn quickly turned into bogies. Stadler was arrested for drunk driving in Ionia on Monday evening as he was heading for Dearborn to participate in media day. He appeared, though late, at the media day on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Stadler returned to Ionia and pleaded guilty on a reduced count. It cost Stadler $900, a date with an alcohol awareness program and he has to attend a victim impact panel. He also withdrew from the Farmers Charity Tournament in Grand Rapids.

Gaylord
Treetops was gearing up for their hectic summer. Besides the golf schools firing up, there is the annual Tylenol Par 3 Shootout and Big Break II taping to get ready for. Treetops has coughed up a million dollars plus to rework and eliminate the old registration area, spruce up the guest rooms and build a new spa area. http://treetops.com

Michawye Pines has been all gussied up for play this year, as architect Don Childs revisited and renovated the course he designed early in his career. Childs made changes at Michaywe that took over a million to implement. Judy Mason, new head pro, has made the pro shop a must visit, with all the great clothes. There were a ton of players on the course, which is always great. Judy is getting ready for the Dick Weber Memorial Tournament coming up on June 12. We chatted with Sharon Weber and shared some memories of her late husband. Dick Weber was a great person. Catch our MGTV show this week for a look at last year's tournament. http://michigangolfer.tv

Otsego Club
Scott Chesley was on hand to bring us to date on what is happening at the Otsego Club. First of all, they have had a nice increase in memberships after their "Test Drive the Otsego Club" promotion. They are settling in after their divestment of the Lake and Loon courses. Their new Tribute and The Classic courses are a great one-two punch of golf. http://otsegoclub.com

Don White has joined Marsh Ridge GC as its golf professional. Marsh Ridge is open under new management. This Mike Husby designed course is still a popular one in the Gaylord area. The classy, Don White should help out this resort that has struggled a little bit in the past couple of years. Don has served as a golf professional at Treetops, Michaywe and now Marsh Ridge. http://michaywe.com

We had the opportunity to feature Gaylord CVB Executive Director, Paul Beachnau on our Friday golf radio show that is hosted by Shawn Peterson. Beachnau, fresh from being on a great lakes freighter for a week, felt bullish about the remaining portion of the golf season. Paul is getting ready to run the Twin Cities Marathon. http://gaylordmichigan.net

Mackinaw City
We ran into Mike Husby, Director of Golf at The loon as he competed in his first road race. The five mile Mackinaw Memorial Bridge Run, held this past weekend, was a very appropriate course for Mike. He has crossed that bridge hundreds of time in the past 10 years, while designing Wild Bluff GC and the second nines of both Indian River and Newberry GC. He said he was absolutely thrilled to run on the bridge, something he had always wanted to do. Mike indicated that play is up, but the weather has been brutal. http://theloon.com

MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION

DAVE MOCINI, FORMER PRESIDENT OF MICHIGAN PGA , TO HEAD TRUE NORTH GC
KemperSports Management named David Mocini as general manager of True North Golf Club, located in Harbor Springs, a resort region in northern Michigan. The 18-hole private club is slated to open in August.

Mocini is no stranger to Michigan's golf scene. He served as longtime head golf professional at Clearbrook Golf Club in Saugatuck, Michigan. Mocini then moved to the Arnold Palmer-designed Ravines Golf Club, also based in Saugatuck, where he played an instrumental role in development, opening and operations as general manager and director of golf. Golf Digest also ranked Mocini, a past president of the Michigan PGA and current member of the National PGA Education Committee, among the "Top 15 Instructors in Michigan" for 2000.

HAPPY 40TH BIRTHDAY ELMBROOK GC-TRAVERSE CITY
Elmbrook GC in Travese City has aged nicely over the years. Of late that nourishment has come under the steady hand of Carole Olson. We did a television show at Elmbrook when they hosted "The Haig" tournament. Terrific course on the outskirts of Traverse City. http://michigangolfer.tv/2003shows/hagen/index.html

LPGA GOLF TIP OF THE WEEK
Mop away that dirty "casting" habit

I sometimes find that students have difficulty understanding how the club actually comes down to hit the ball. Since the student is holding the club with their hands, the instinct is to use the hands immediately on the way down from the top of the back swing. This results in "casting," which will produce a shot that is weak and to the right. Typically, it makes most of the longer irons (3, 4 and 5) go the same distance.

Here's how to practice the correct downswing:
- Take a rag top mop and soak it in water (make sure you are outside and away from anything you do not want to spray with water!). Begin swinging the mop as if hitting a golf ball. If you are "casting," you will see the water spray out before you reach the ground where the ball would be. Continue to swing the mop until the water sprays out at the ball. This will teach you to keep the water in the mop until impact.
- You can also use a short iron (8, 9, pitching wedge) to practice the "Pump It Drill." This will help you feel the correct path on the downswing. To view this drill, go to the following link on my website: HTTP://www.progolflesson.com/drills.html.

CHANCE TO PLAY GOLF WITH TIGER WOODS IN BUICK OPEN CHARITY AUCTION
A chance to play golf with Tiger Woods is among several items available to the public in a special auction to raise money for the Buick Open charities. The items will be available for bid on ebay (go to http://www.ebay.com) starting at 10 p.m. (ET) on May 29th through June 5th.

"There are some great items up for bid in the auction," said Larry Peck, Buick's Golf Marketing Manager. "This is an excellent opportunity to raise additional funds for the Buick Open charities and we encourage everyone to participate."
Buick is offering to the highest bidder a package that includes roundtrip airfare for two, hotel accommodations, and an opportunity to partner with Tiger Woods at the Buick Open Pro-Am in Grand Blanc, Michigan, on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 (or the next Buick-sponsored tournament that Tiger plays in).
