FORD SENIOR UPDATE-JACK BERRY
The Ford Senior Players Championship has come up with a clever
advertising campaign for the $2.5 million tournament at the
Tournament Players Club of Michigan, July 7-10. The theme is:
Same Great Players Better Pants
Pictured are Tom Watson, Hale Irwin and Craig Stadler wearing
screaming loud trousers they wore in the 1960s. They should have
gotten a picture of defending champion Mark James who said, after
looking at the posters of Watson, Stadler and Irwin, ³When I was an
amateur I had a pair of creased white polyester pants with red
Chinese writing on them.²
Now they wear khaki pants and black pants. Thing is, for all the
laughs the old pants bring now, just look across the pond at Ian
Poulter, Darren Clarke and Fredrik Jacobsen and wild pants are back.
How long will it be before Watson, Irwin and Stadler are in the pink
again?
Their games certainly are in the pink. Irwin has won twice this
year, his 41st and 42nd Champions Tour victories in 11 years, and has
earned more than $21 million since turning 50 in 1995. Stadler has won eight
times since his 50th birthday in June 2003, making the Ford Senior
Players Championship his first Champions Tour victory a month later
and last year winning five times and being voted Player of the Year
by his peers.
Watson hasnıt played as often but he makes the majors as do all of
the top players so recruiting isnıt a problem for Ford Division
general marketing manager Marty Collins. Itıs a different story with
the Ford Championship at Doral.
³The first two years at Doral we werenıt satisfied with the field,²
Collins said. ³What drives golf on the weekend? Strength of field.
And itıs the top 5-6 who drive the television ratings Phil Mickelson,
Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia, Retief Goosen
and itıs very rare they all play the same event other than the
majors.
³Itıs no different than the movies the stars draw,² Collins said.
³We decided for 2005 that we had to improve and recruiting is a tough
game, very, very work intensive.²
That means making sure the players like the course and, after some
down years when Doralıs Blue Monster wasnıt what it used to be, the
course was upgraded. The $5.5 million purse is among the highest on
the PGA Tour and the perks just get better. The Tour prohibits
players being paid appearance money but Ford did pay four of the
superstars to play in a one day outing at another club for a group
of Ford dealers.
Collins said that ³technically² that wasnıt a violation of the Tour
ban but it, and some perks offered by other tournaments, especially
the Mercedes and Wachovia events, raised eyebrows of some other
tournaments not so richly-endowed.
Everything worked like magic this year for Ford with Mickelson and
Woods battling down the wire and Woods overcoming a two stroke
deficit to win by a shot with Singh tied for third. Ford would have
preferred its man, Mickelson, to win, but the ratings were superb.
And they didnıt need loud pants to get them.

"Jerry Matthews:Michigan Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2005"
Jerry Matthews was one of four inductees to the Michigan Golf Hall of
Fame last week. Matthews and his father's firm were responsible for
designing 90 original golf courses and over 100 renovations. In our
show, Matthews chats with another Hall of Fame member, Jack Berry.

Stan Aldridge-Michigan Golf Hall of Fame-Class of 2005
Stan Aldridge has had a tremendous impact on the game of golf. He
resurrected Indianwood Golf & Country Club, added another great
course, by Robert Cupp and then proceeded to buy Lakewoods resort and
add The Gailes and Blackshire.Along the way, he hosted two U.S.
Womens Opens at Indianwood. He indicates that he is just a care taker
of the property. That might be so, but because of his efforts, there is
more to take care of. We feel you will enjoy Jack Berry's interview of
this latest Michigan Golf Hall of Famer.

MGN ON THE ROAD
Acme-Grand Traverse Resort and Spa
When you offer $79 to play all day on the Wolverine or the The Bear,
you can expect a full parking lot and that is what happened at the
Grand Traverse Resort and Spa this past weekend. Coming up on June
20-23, TC courses will be participating in the "Golf Your Daylights
Out" program.
Also, the resort is making a big pitch for junior golfers, by
building junior tees on the Spruce Run course and also bringing
on board some junior golf equipment. Tom McGee, Director of Golf,
at the resort feels that more families want to play with their
children and this plan should take care of that need.
Gaylord-Otsego Club, Treetops
Otsego Club
Mark Hogan was on hand to provide directions as 60 Canadians readied
themselves to play The Tribute. For golfers in the Sault Ste. Marie
area, Gaylord, Michigan is South and thus a little warmer. Many
Michigan resorts allow Canadians to play at Par rates until Memorial
Day and then return to them after Labor Day.
Hogan indicated that they are now under the management of Total Golf,
the golf management company of Jim Dewling. They also manage, among
other courses, the new Forest Dunes course in Roscommon. This allows
the Otsego Club to partner and offer golf packages for their own
courses, The Classic and The Tribute, with the Tom Weiskopf Forest
Dunes course.

Treetops Resort
Scott Head, Director of Golf for Treetops, is readying his team for
another year of growth. Last week, was the Harry Melling Invitation
Tournament, the annual kickoff of Treetops year. On the other end of
calendar, they close the courses with their Pepsi Challenge
Tournament in the fall.
They will also be featuring the ING Par 3 Shoot out on June 27-28.
Tickets are still available, but Scott Head says that they really
move fast as the date approaches. They allow 1500 golfers on the
course during the event that is also televised on ESPN.

Grayling-Grayling CC-Fox Run Country Club
The original nine at Grayling was built in 1924, with Jeff Gorney
designing the second nine in 1989. Actually, the new design mixed
the original and new holes, so a golfer is treated to new and old holes
as they play the course. Grayling is a fine course, well maintained and
kind to the pocketbook. Chris Zviker is the GM, Dan Mc Cullough, the
professional and Bud Hamblin, assistant greenskeeper.
http://graylingcountryclub.com
Also in the area is Fox Run CC, Bob and Geri Koutnik's fine course,
that is rated a 4 Star Golf Digest Places to Play. It is a little
bit out of town, but worth the drive as a golfer has room to stretch out
on its 225 acres of northern Michigan hardwoods. Bob Koutnik is the
PGA at the club, which features a plethora of golf instruction
packages including a junior golf program.

Mackinac Island-The Jewel, Wawashkamo GC and The Greens
Grand Hotel-The Jewel
We find ourselves at another Jerry Matthews course, this time the
Jewel at the Grand Hotel. Jerry blasted a great course out of the
Mackinac Island rock and when done, went back and fine tuned the
original course. It is fitting that Michigan's great and storied
hotel would have a course designed by one of Michigan's great and
storied architects.
Jason Horricks, who has worked at Candlestone in Belding and was an
assistant at the Jewel, is now the head professional. This year,
they are putting in some junior tees on the original nine, to
encourage that age group to more involved with golf. Dave Finn,
Associate Superintendent, indicated that northern courses got hit
with conditions that cause snow mold this past winter. Most of the
snow mold will be cleared up within a couple of weeks.
The Grand was full with the Knights of Columbus members who were
winding up their state meeting and preparing to take in a sit down
meal with 1400 at the new banquet center. The Grand Hotel is truly
an amazing place, You can spend hours reading its history as photos,
articles and other memorabilia is omnipresent.
http://grandhotel.com
Wawashkamo GC
Fred "Fritz" George, PGA Professional at the club, indicated that
this year's Hickory Stick Golf Tournament will be held on August 20.
You can play this 1898 Alex Smith 9 -hole course for $30 this year. A
second nine will cost $15.
Mission Point-The Greens
There are three upscale putting courses in Michigan, one at Hawk
Hollow, a second at Big Buck's and a third here at Mission Point.
This is a great way to wile away some time and practice your short
game while watching the freighters ply the Great Lakes waterway.
We opened our radio show on The Greens this past week, and then went
on to visit with Scott Head of Treetops and Bill Knopp of the Park
Place Hotel. The Park Place is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee.
http://missionpoint.com
We also met the affable, Bill Wishart, on the Island, doing his "Its
Five O'clock Somewhere" show for Oldies 101.5 in Gaylord. He has 13
Fridays on the Island this year, visiting all the bars and saloons
and playing music with chattter. Not a bad gig.
Mullet Lake-Mullet Lake Country Club
After 27 years of covering golf, I thought I had seen all of the
"Hidden Gems" of Michigan golf, but there is another to add to the
list, Mullet Lake CC. According to manager, Vickie Berden-Huyck, the
nine hole course was established in 1921. Al Tallman, was reputed to
be the individual that designed the course at that time. The course
has an enchanting look when looking out from the clubhouse. Frankly,
it makes you want to get your clubs out of the car.
