MGN ON THE ROAD
Acme
Grand Traverse Resort & Spa
We never seem to get tired of the rush we get when we spot the GTR&S
Tower and the visible fairways and greens of the Wolverine, Bear and
Spruce courses at this resort. It is one of the great visual golf
welcoming sights in Michigan. The resort has had some substantial remodeling
during the winter and the enlarged field of the Michigan Open will have
much to see when they tee it up later this month.
At the Michigan Amateur media day, Jack Berry and Larry Adderley got
into a discussion about great finishing holes and the 18th at the Heather
and The Bear pulled most of the adjectives out of their quote bag. The
water in front of both greens have captured enough of my errant shots
over the years to lessen my net worth.
With the departures of the Farmer's Charity Golf Classic, the Ann Arbor
Bank Futures Golf Classic, The Bay Mills Open of the Canadian Tour and
this year's final Ford Senior Players Championshipr; the Michigan Open
and Michigan Amateur are now getting more of the media spotlight.
Happily, the Buick and the ING Par- 3 Shootout still allow us to see some of
the nation's best golfers. Let us hope we can hang on to these
tournaments as we begin to rebuild our tournament field again.

Harbor Springs
The Heather at Boyne Highlands
As mentioned in last week's MGN, Michigan golf media was getting
pampered by the good folks of Boyne and the GAM. They are most excited
about the 95th Michigan Amateur that will begin on June 20 and conclude on
the 24th. The Michigan Amateur field will have medal play on Tuesday
and Wednesday with the player having the lowest 36 hole total having his
name engraved on the Charles Kocsis Medalist Trophy. Obviously, with
the passing of Charles Kocsis, this year's win will be even more
significant. Significant others of the GAM staff that will be involved in the
Michigan Amateur are General Chairman, John Standish; Tournament
Chairman, Dr. Roger Ostrander, Executive Director, David Graham, Director of
Rules & Competitions, Ken Hartman and Director of Communications, Tonia
Branch.
Another star of this year's Michigan Amateur will be the Heather
course. The Heather is celebrating 40 years of giving golfer's a world class
golfing experience. On hand for the Media Day were Director of Golf,
Michael Chumbler, Golf Professional Dave Trudell, V.P. Bernie Friedrich
and Julie Ard of Marketing and Public Relations. Superintendent, Matt
Novenske was introduced, but sources there indicated he was out on the
course encouraging the rough to get rougher. It all adds up to a
dramatic setting for a series of dramatic duels. BTW, it is also the 10th
Anniversary for Bay Harbor GC as well.

Harbor Point Golf Club
GLSP is now beginning work that will present one of Michigan oldest and
most renown golf courses, Harbor Point Golf Club, to the world. Video
taping will start in two weeks and the first of a number of videos will
be available for viewing this fall. Designed by Richard Lee/David
Foulis the Harbor Point golf course opened for play in 1896. Shawn
Bezilla is the club professional and will host the upcoming video.

Mancelona
Schuss Mountain GC @ Shanty Creek Resort
They are still sorting some things out at Shanty Creek Resort as the
new ownership prepares its game plan to revitalize its new property.
However, there is a certain bounce in the air from the staff we have
encountered. I still remember the greeting of, "Its a beautiful day at
Shanty Creek, how can we help you?" that used to greet me as a caller.
This resort has it all, it just needs to have that fresh start.
Mike Mooney, Assistant Golf Professional, at Shanty Creek's Schuss
Mountain, has moved the proshop right into the lobby of Schuss. The former
pro shop, now stands vacant, ready for its next role within the resort
complex. Schuss Mountain is one of Warner Bowen most celebrated
designs. Built in 1972, on the front end of the golf boom, the course was
the epitome of our great northern golf courses. Bowen was an architect
who did much of his design in the seat of a bulldozer. Bowen also
designed, the Dearborn Hills Golf Club, the Alpena Golf Club, Glen Kerry in
Greenville, Indian River Golf Club, Shores Golf Club in Shelby, Cedar
Creek Golf Club in Battle Creek, Centennial Golf Course in Sunfield,
Prairiewood in Holland and Double RR Ranch in Belding to name a few of his
courses.

The First Tee Program at Boyne Highlands
http://michigangolfer.tv/2006shows/firsttee/
The Executive Director of the Boyne Highlands program is Shauna
Bezilla. Jennie McCafferty interviewed Shauna as a number of the First Tee
coaches, including PGA professional Bill O'Neil, helped out during the
fourth meeting of this chapter.
The First Tee is a national program with 202 Chapters and 256
facilities. There are five such programs in Michigan; The First Tee of Battle
Creek at Binder Park Golf Course, The First Tee of Benton Harbor at the
Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor, The First Tee of Lansing at
Sycamore Golf Course, The First Tee of Detroit at Belle Isle Practice Center
and The First Tee of Boyne Highlands at Cuff Links Golf
Course.
http://tftboynehighlands.memfirstweb.net/Club/Scripts/Home/home.asp
The First Tee program promotes nine core values:
1. Honesty - the quality or state of being truthful; not deceptive Golf
is unique from other sports in that players regularly call penalties on
themselves.
2 Integrity -strict adherence to a standard of value or conduct.
Personal honesty and independence. Golf is a game of honesty, etiquette and
composure. You are responsible for your actions and personal conduct on
the golf course.
3. Sportsmanship- observing the rules of play and winning or losing
with grace. You must know and abide by the rules of golf and be able to
conduct yourself in a respectful manner.
4. Respect- to feel or show deferential regard for; esteem. In golf, it
is important to show respect for yourself, your partners, your
opponents and the golf course as well as for the honor and traditions of the
game.
5. Confidence- reliance or trust. A feeling of
self-assurance Confidence plays a key role in the level of play that you achieve. You must have
confidence in your abilities every time you play.
6. Responsibility- accounting for one’s actions; dependable. In golf,
you are responsible for yourself and your actions on the golf course. It
is up to you to keep score, repair divots, rake bunkers, repair ball
marks on the green and keep up with the pace of play.
7. Perseverance - to persist in an idea, purpose or task despite
obstacles. To succeed in golf, you must learn to persevere through bad breaks
and your own mistakes.
8. Courtesy - considerate behavior toward others. A polite remark or
gesture. A round of golf should begin and end with a handshake between
fellow competitors. Show courtesy toward others by remaining still and
quiet while they prepare and execute a shot.
9. Judgment - the ability to make a decision or form an opinion. A
decision reached after consideration. Using good judgment is critical in
golf. It comes into play when deciding on strategy, club selection, when
to play safe and when to take a chance, the type of shot you

CHICK EVANS CADDIE SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO 28 CADDIES IN MICHIGAN
The Evans Scholars Foundation has awarded 28 full tuition and housing
scholarships to caddies from the state of Michigan for the 2006-07
academic year. The students will live in an Evans Scholarship House at the
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor or Michigan State University in East
Lansing, two of the 14 chapters in the Evans Scholars Program. All of
the Scholars are golf caddies who earned scholarships based on four
criteria: caddie record, academic record, financial need and character.
In the fall of 2006 there will be 825 Evans Scholars in school. More
than 8,400 have graduated as Evans Scholars since the program was founded
in 1930 by Charles “Chick” Evans Jr., famed Chicago amateur golfer and
winner of the 1916 U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur. The Western Golf
Association has administered the Chick Evans Scholarship Program since its
inception in 1930 through the Evans Scholars Foundation. The Program has
grown to become the largest privately funded scholarship program in the
nation.
Funds for the scholarships come mostly from contributions by more than
500 member clubs, 35,000 WGA Par Club members and 100,000 golfers in
the WGA Bag Tag Program. Evans Scholar Alumni donate over $2 million
annually to the program.
The scholarship program is also supported by 23 affiliated golf
associations and from proceeds generated by the Cialis® (tadalifil) Western
Open. First conducted by the WGA in 1899, the Western Open is the oldest
professional tournament on the regular PGA TOUR and the second oldest
in the nation.

DOAK OPENS SUNCADIA IN WASHINGTON
Renowned golf course architect Tom Doak met the challenge to create a
course on a pristine piece of property that would reflect the natural
setting of the soaring pines, peaceful woodlands and sunny meadows, as
well as the streams and ponds that prosper along the eastern slope of the
Cascades.
"We had no idea how great the views to the mountains would be until we
started clearing out the fairways," reflected Doak, the guest of honor
at the special dedication festivities. "But what we saw encouraged us
to clear things out wider to open up the vistas. We even changed the
routing a bit after the start of construction, moving the 16th green and
17th tee to take advantage of a prominent spot overlooking the river."
Tumble Creek is the second of three golf courses at Suncadia, a
6,300-acre resort community 80 miles east of Seattle, where residents and
travelers alike enjoy a four-season recreation area adjacent to the 2.2
million acre Wenatchee National Forest. The Doak course joins the Arnold
Palmer-designed Prospector, which debuted in the summer of 2005, and
will be joined in 2007 by Rope Rider, designed by Peter Jacobsen and Jim
Hardy. Both Prospector and Rope Rider are resort courses open to the
public.
