This is becoming the land of "Sip and Chip", as golf courses and vineyards combine to lure the golfing and wine dollars. King's Challenge, The Leelanau Club., Mistwood, High Point and Elmbrook supply the golf. Bel Lago Vineyard and Winery, Black Star Farms, Chateau Fontaine, Chateau de Leelanau Vineyard and Winery, Ciccone Vineyard and Winery, Gill's Pier Vineyard & Winery, Good Harbor Vineyards, L. Mawby, Leelanau Wine Cellars, Shady Lane Cellars and Willow Vineyard. Finally, the Park Place Hotel provides the rooms. We stopped at the Leelanau Wine Festival in Leland and it was a hoot.

Thompsonville-Crystal Mountain Resort
Rodger Jabara, was holding court Sunday morning as the golfer began lining up for their round. Rain has been a problem in the north country as well. However, The Cottages at Water's Edge, have plenty of water to showcase this most interesting project. We were a couple of week's early for the total roll out of this project, but it is terrific.
We ran into Chris MacInnes, who was the night manager for the evening. All of the Crystal Adminstrators take a turn at this duty to make sure they get close to the customer. These Crystal Mountain folks really have developed a corporate culture that is one of the best in the Midwest resort. We stayed at the Kinlochen in the Kellie room. It was a fantastic evening.
Crystal will be hosting the Michigan PGA Women's Pro Am and Open from July 24-28.

San Diego- Barona Valley Ranch Resort and Casino
Sorry, MGN has taken it on the lam this week for some sunny and dry skies in San Diego and L.A.. As you read this, we are most likely playing under par rounds at the Barona Valley Ranch Resort and Casino. The Barona Creek Golf Club features five individual tees to accommodate varying skill levels. Experienced players will enjoy the complexities of the Black tees, which offer 7,088 yards of open terrain with a slope of 139 and a rating of 74.5. Piece of cake.

GAM MICHIGAN AMATEUR AT GROSSE ILE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB

Next week the 93rd Michigan Amateur Championship returns to the Detroit area as Grosse Ile G & CC plays host to the GAM-conducted event. Indeed, 156 amateurs and those spectators new to the venue are in for a treat. Grosse Ile, a founding member of the GAM, is a notable, well-preserved and neatly groomed Donald Ross-designed layout. The greens are, in the words of a past president of the Donald Ross Society, "the best set and least altered Donald Ross greens ever seen."
Home course of 5-time Michigan Amateur champion Glenn Johnson, Grosse Ile has a lively and rich heritage. Located south of Detroit on the island of Grosse Ile (which means "Big Island" in French), the club's roots go back to the 1890s when some island residents formed the Willow Bank Dancing Society and where its first clubhouse was named "The Casino." In 1905, the Society was renamed to Grosse Ile Country Club when a simple nine-hole golf course was built. More than a decade later, summer resident and auto wheel mogul John Kelsey, provided $350,000 to America's preeminent golf architect-Donald Ross-to design and build an 18-hole golf course. Due to Kelsey's deep pockets, Grosse Ile even boasted the unprecedented introduction of watered fairways in Michigan. Grosse Ile thrived as a club until it was struck hard by the Great Depression during which its membership and revenues waned. During WW II, the club even introduced slot machines (in the pre-gaming age) as a way to entice
military men and their wallets from a nearby air station to spend some much needed money there.
Through the years, Grosse Ile survived and carried on. It has hosted a number of tournaments and special events, including its legendary annual Invitational that harks back to 1937-surely one of the oldest in the state of its ilk. Why even Arnold Palmer competed in it, thereby giving it regal certification. In 1968, the Western Amateur was contested at the club and was won by Rik Massengale who would later win three PGA Tour events. Blythefield's Buddy Whitten won the Michigan Match Play Championship in 1989.
But this year Grosse Ile is poised and proud to host its first ever Michigan Amateur. Although seemingly benign at only 6720 yards and par 71, the course possesses plenty of guile and deceptive trouble to confront the state's top amateurs. Given the right weather and course conditions, the greens will be a test especially for those who find themselves putting above the hole. Many of the greens slope back to front, as was the design custom of the era, and almost all have confounding mounds and slopes sure to bedevil even the best putters.
Players with classic and traditional design sensibilities will savor not only the natural and unadorned setting of the greensites but also the layout's walker-friendly ambience. With only a few exceptions, greens and tees are located close to one another. As such, the layout will allow for an enjoyable and convenient venue to watch play. Noted earlier, Grosse Ile doesn't have modern day length but its tight fairways, subtle doglegs, and gnarly rough, especially if wet, will demand accuracy off the tee. To find the proper spot on the greens, hitting fairways will be paramount.
A brief mention should be made too about the contributions Michigan course architect W. Bruce Matthews III has made to the course. Matthews was retained by the club several years ago for some overdue renovations. After studying old aerial photos of course, Matthews embarked on "re-Rossing" the bunkers. All the bunkers were tweaked and given needed definition and shape. Also, Matthews added length to the par-five third hole which now measures 515 yards. Complementing these smart and deft renovations, the club also invested in recent years on an improved drainage (the terrain is largely clay and sits near the Detroit River water table) and new irrigation systems.
Sponsored by GMAC Mortgage, the Michigan Amateur begins with 18 holes of stroke play on Tuesday and Wednesday to determine 64 players for match play. The final match will take place Saturday afternoon.
One final note. Longtime Michigan golf writer and Grand Rapids sportscaster Tom Cleary, 48, qualified for this year's Amateur for the first time by firing a 76 (tied for second low round of the day) at The Pines at Lake Isabella in Mount Pleasant last month. In a nice bit of serendipity, Cleary will be returning to the course where he was once a caddie (Grosse Ile boasts a strong and well-supported caddie program) during his high school days at Southgate Aquinas. Winner of the 2000 Golf Writers Association of America medal play championship, Cleary should recall the club's lively heritage and heed this friendly advice: Get in the slot and on the dance floor.
LPGA TIP OF THE WEEK- SETTING UP FOR SUCCESS
The all-important pre-swing routine, which includes grip, aim, stance, posture and ball position in relation to the feet, should be practiced so as to become a natural, repetitive habit prior to every shot. Setting up properly takes only a few seconds, encourages confidence and helps promote correct in-swing motion.
Oftentimes, shoulder alignment is ignored. Open shoulders (shoulders that aim left of target for a right-handed set up) are one of the chief causes of a slice swing. The arms and hands tend to follow the shoulder alignment during the forward swing. Open shoulders can occur when the right hand is placed on the grip. If the right hand comes into the grip from above the shaft, the shoulders open. A quick cure: at address hold the club with the left hand only. Aim the left shoulder about five yards right of the intended target. Take the right hand and slide it underneath the grip, adjusting the right hand for the appropriate placement. By taking the right hand grip from underneath, the right shoulder will be less likely to move in front of the left shoulder.
Including proper shoulder alignment in the pre-swing routine can go a long way toward eliminating the unintended slice and promote a successful set-up.

WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS
Grand Island Golf Course in Belmont, Michigan had 4 fairways that were destroyed in the 2004 Flood in May and early June of this year. Many West Michigan Superintendent's joined together this past Tuesday for a work day to help clean up, arriate and reseed the fairways to help Grand Island recover from this disaster. The superintendents also brought in the necessary equipment to get the job done. John Deere also assisted in this help day with equipment. Other reps and companies also were on hand to help.
Todd Brunsink, one of the owners of Grand Island and the PGA Professional there, was obviously grateful for this terrific contribution. also. He wanted to pass on thanks to all those who helped.
CLOCK TOWER PRESS GETS AWARD FOR GENE SARAZEN AND SHELL'S WONDERFUL WORLD OF GOLF
At the 11th Annual ING Media Awards ceremony, Ann Arbor's Clock Tower Press won in the best book category for Al Barklow and Mary Sarazen's, "Gene Sarazen and Shell's Wonderful World of Golf". GOLF 20/20 ANNUAL REPORT
GOLF 20/20, the World Golf Foundation's initiative focused on the growth of the game, has published its annual Industry Report, available in its entirety at HTTP://www.golf2020.com.
Highlights from the Report include the following:
Interest in golf remains very strong. "Over the past seven years no other sport has experienced as big an increase in the number of people claiming to be fans than has professional golf, and in fact only one other sport has shown an increase at all."
The decrease in rounds played from 2002 to 2003 was 1.5%, just half the decrease from 2001 to 2002, indicating that as the economy rebounds, rounds played can be expected to rebound also.
There were 37.9 million participants in 2003, and 27.4 million golfers, both all- time high numbers. ("Participants" also includes junior golfers ages 5-17, and those participants who utilize only short courses or golf ranges.)
Both research and recent trends indicate that women represent the most significant opportunity for future growth, and that golf must focus on reaching ethnic minorities, where interest has grown tremendously over the past seven years.
