MGN ON THE ROAD
Gaylord-The Otsego Club
MGN had another opportunity to visit The Tribute course at the Otsego Club. It is a wonderful course and not only a tribute to the Keith Gornick's and Gary Koch's fathers, it is a tribute to the land it was built on. Mark Hogan is in good spirits as the golf rounds in June have been up on the 54-Hole Shootout. MG-TV will have a show on the course next month.

Grand Rapids-Mines Golf Course
Todd Loughlin, the new PGA Professional at The Mines Golf Club is itching to get his course open and underway. There are still a couple of holes on this Mike DeVries design that have to grow in, but a mid-July date is still on the schedule. The course has some dramatic land and DeVries has put together yet another magic experience for the golfer. DeVries other designs include; Diamond Springs, Kingsley, Greywalls and Pilgrim's Golf Club.

Harbor Springs-True North and Harbor Point
True North, the latest course by awarding winning designer, Jim Engh, is outrageously awesome. The official Grand Opening is this Saturday and will supply golf writers with enough material to last the summer. This course will only be taking public play until their membership fills and therefore, you need to book a tee time before this window is closed.

Harbor Point
It was quite a transition going from True North, Michigan's newest golf course to Harbor Point, one of Michigan's oldest golf courses, but it does let you appreciate how the sculpting of a course out of the land has changed. Shawn Bezilla, is the new caretaker of this 109 year old course and he is very excited about the opportunity. Shawn was the head professional at Little Traverse Bay for many years.

A new website is on the way, one of the moves that Bezilla has made to make Habor Point a little more visible to the golfing public.

Hart-Colonial Golf Course
Craig Barter was holding down the proshop for Harold Webb, the PGA Professional at the four year old course. This is a Jeff Gorney design. Gorney has also designed Hessel Ridge, Little Traverse Bay, The Dream, The Nightmare, Sparrow Hawk, Heathlands, Huron Shores. Green Briar and Lakeview Hills. This is a 27 hole complex, nine of them being a executive course. They have a big time restaurant, Colonial Restaurant and Grill, that serves the entire community.

Holland-Macatawa Legends Golf and Country Club
We caught up with Ray and Brenda Hearn at the 12th hole of Macatawa Legends Golf and Country Club during the Grand Opening. Rain dampened the early festivities, but the uniqueness of the Ray Hearn design showed through a Canadian "Norwester" coming off Lake Michigan. Working with a very flat piece of ground, Hearns has created a championship course that will live up to its Legends name. Hearn's firm continues to pick up work with current projects now in New York, the Bahamas, Connecticut and Montana. He is also involved in a couple of proposals with Rick Smith.

Indian River-Chestnut Valley
Mark Buchanan is the head pro at Chestnut Valley after internships under Randy Erskine at Great Oaks and six years with Boyne. The course was designed by Larry Mancour, former PGA Tour player and Michigan legend. Mancour also designed Dunmaglas and the new Eagle Beach course in Alanson. Chestnut Valley was in excellent shape and is continuing to draw golfers to its tees.

Mears-Golden Sands Golf Club
Alicia Kolenda is one of a number of owners that are taking the Golden Sands Golf Course to the next level, or in this case an additional nine holes. The original course was built by a farmer/businessman that wanted to keep his golf loving wife a little closer to home. Once built, the course became more of a business instead of a home course and the owners sold it to Kolenda et.al. While this is a fine nine hole course, Kolenda indicates that the new nine will be on some very dramatic land. Nearby, Sierra Sands Motel, owned by Bob and Marilyn Henry, will take care of your lodging in this Silver Lake community.

Ludington-Hemlock Golf Club, Epsworth Heights, Lincoln Hills Golf Club Hemlock Golf Club
John and Mike Kennedy are the owners of this Ray Hearn design. John Kennedy has been a golf course superintendent for a couple of decades, working at Tecumseh CC for 12 years and then moving on to the prestigious Highland Meadows, home of the Jamie Farr Classic. When his brother, a physician in Ludington, put together the land and the money, John joined him to bring this course and their collective dream to fruition.

Epworth Heights
This private club is a throw back to the early days of the 20th century. It services a private community of cottages that date back to the days of steamship travel on the Great Lakes and the time that Ludington was one of the major ports, besides Chicago on the Lake Michigan shore. The course is in immaculate shape, which is appropriate for those who have continued the legacy of this very affluent and private community in our state.

Lincoln Hills Golf Club
This is an 18 hole golf course that is semi-private. It is heavily wooded and tight off the tee.

Montague -Old Channel Trail
After visiting close to 1000 golf courses in my life, this is one that I had not gotten to until this past week. Owned by Merriam and Lyle Leeke, two giants in this business, it is now in the very capable hands of the next generation of care givers, Heather and Bill Leeke.

The magic of this 27-hole layout is that the three nines have been built by three different generations of golf architects. The first nine was designed in 1927 by Robert Bruce Harris, one of the founders of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. The second nine, built in 1966 was designed by Mr. Michigan Golf, W. Bruce Matthews. Finally, the third nine, was designed by W. Bruce Matthews' son, Jerry Matthews, in 1994. Each nine offers you a distinctive experience and an opportunity to enjoy the evolution of Michigan golf architects. Playing these different style courses are al treat for golfers and golf historians alike. The second hole of the W. Bruce Matthews course yields a terrific view of Lake Michigan, one of the first golf courses on Lake Michigan to offer such a view.

Chris Cullen, Director of Instruction at the course, has an excellent instructional area, with putting green, driving range and practice holes.

Pinckney-Timber Trace Golf Club
Timber Trace Golf Club, a Conroy/Dewling design is part of the Michigan Grand Golf Trail challenge and maybe just what you're looking for if an "up north" golf experience is your choice. Carved out of mature oaks, large maples and rows of tall standing pines surrounds this beautiful layout.

Rothbury-The Thoroughbred
It has been some time since we visited the Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury, too long. The property features, the original ranch, The Thoroughbred, the hotel, The Back Forty, the R.V. camp, the cabin areas and rodeos. In addition, another 40 million dollars of future projects are on the drawing boards. The work of Joan and Bob Lipsitz has been one of the great resort stories in Michigan over the past 20 years.

Ty Love, the Director of Golf, was on hand and he was happy to report that rounds are up for the year. We had time to take a cart and revisit the grandeur of the front nine, including the infamous second hole. This is an Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest design, and one of the courses that Art Hills likes to revisit each year. It is a special course and one of the anchors of the Arthur Hills Michigan Golf Trail.

Whitehall-White Lake Golf Club
We happened upon White Lake Golf Club, designed by E. E. Roberts in 1916, and marveled at the condition of the course and the magnificent trees that create an umbrella of leaves for the course's fairways. The course is private and offers a haven for those of means and a golf game.

WILLIAMS ELECTED TO LONG DRIVE HALL OF FAME
Evan (Big Cat) Williams has been elected to the LDA Hall of Fame, Long Drivers of America (LDA) announced today. The long drive champion will be inducted at a ceremony on October 21 during the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship in Mesquite, Nevada.

Williams, 57, a New Jersey native who resides in Rochester Hills, Michigan, won consecutive U.S. National Long Drive Championships in 1976-77. Williams' winning drive in 1977, a 353-yard blast at Pebble Beach Golf Links, stayed on the books as the championship record for 18 years, until Sean (The Beast) Fister won in 1995 with 362+ yards.

Williams is an accomplished golfer as well as power hitter, having played in PGA Tour and Senior PGA Tour events.

CAROLYN BIVENS TO HEAD LPGA
Carolyn Bivens, a longtime media executive who is president and chief operating officer of Initiative Media, has been chosen as the next LPGA commissioner. Bivens will succeed Ty Votaw, becoming the seventh LPGA commissioner and first female to lead the organization.

COUPLES TO DEFEND AT ING PAR3 SHOOTOUT-TREETOPS
Fred Couples will return to Treetops Resort to defend his ING Par-3 Shootout title on June 27th & 28th. Joining Fred is the worldıs number 4 player in the world, Phil Mickelson, and two ING Par-3 Shootout rookies: two-time US Open Champion, Andy North, and golfıs funnyman and network personality, Gary McCord. The event will be telecast on ESPN2 each evening, tape delayed from 1000 PM ­ Midnight.

Contested on Americaıs number one Par 3 Course, the purse for the 18-hole tournament is $540,000 and an additional $1 million bonus is available for every hole-in-one -- (won by Lee Trevino in 2001 when he aced the 138-yard 7th hole). Each hole is worth $20,000, with a $10,000 bonus for the player hitting his shot closest to the pin. If the hole is not won, the money carries over to the next hole. If the hole is won, the player doesnıt get the money unless he validates it on the next hole by either winning or tying the low score. No validation is necessary on playoff holes.

YOUNG GUNS DOMINATE SWEET SIXTEEN FIELD AT 94TH MICHIGAN AMATEUR
Muskegon ­ Youth prevailed during the first day of match play at the 94th Michigan Amateur held at the Muskegon Country Club. Windy conditions made the already challenging Donald Ross design even more difficult.

³The wind was brutal out there today,² said 2003 champion Colby Beckstrom, who won his two matches to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. ³It makes this a totally different golf course, very tough.² Beckstrom was one of 16 players to advance from the field of 64 players who qualified after two days of stroke play. The field of 16 is dominated by young college players. The oldest person is 28; at the younger end of the grouping, there are five 19-year-olds.    

This yearıs medalist, Andy Ruthkoski, was eliminated in his second match. Heıs in good company, however. Only seven medalists have gone on to win the championship in its 94-year history.

³Anybody can win,² Ruthkoski said. ³Everything changes when you go to match play.²  Match play continues on Friday and Saturday, with two rounds of matches per day. The 18-hole Championship match is set for Saturday afternoon.

BANK OF ANN ARBOR FUTURES GOLF CLASSIC STARTS THIS WEEK
Who is hotter on the FUTURES Golf Tour than second-year pro Jenny Gleason of Clearwater, Fla., who won her second consecutive tournament last week? Gleason arrives in Ann Arbor looking for season win No. 3. There will be five 2005 winners in the field attempting to win the fifth annual tournament in Ann Arbor. But the likes of Lori Atsedes of Ithaca, N.Y., Kyeong Bae of Seoul, Korea, Gleason, Jin Young Pak of Kang Leoung, Korea, and Sarah-Jane Kenyon of Queensland, Australia will have to wrestle this year's event from the eight Michigan natives in the field.
