Bloomfield Hills-Oakland Hills CC

=================================================
12 PLAYERS QUALIFY FOR THE OPEN AT OAKLAND HILLS
=================================================
Oakland Hills CC debuted its new longer, narrower and more hazardous personna this week as
the IFQ for The Open was held on its vintage fairways and greens.  While the course was
not set up to Major standards, as per the request of R&A, but was a stern test non the
less. With the PGA Championship coming to Oakland Hills next year, the golfing world will
see the changes that Rees Jones made on the changes his father made to the Donald Ross
course.

International Final Qualifying (IFQ) were held at: Africa - Royal Johannesburg and
Kensington, South Africa, January 16-17; Australasia - The Lakes, Sydney, Australia,
February 6; Asia - Sentosa, Singapore, March 27-28; America - Oakland Hills, Michigan,
USA, July 2 and Europe - Sunningdale, Berkshire, England, July 2.

IFQ was open to players holding Official World Golf Ranking pointage who had not gained
exemption into the Championship by any other qualification. The field for each IFQ was be
limited to 120 players. If the entry exceeded this number, players with the highest world
ranking would gain the places. Players were free to choose any of the five international
venues irrespective of where they normally compete. Those players eligible included world
ranked amateurs, who may enter IFQ or Local Final Qualifying (LFQ).
IFQ is in addition to the 16 Regional Qualifying (RQ) competitions, all in Great Britain
and Ireland, and four LFQ events. There was 12 guaranteed places from LFQ and those
eligible can enter either IFQ or LFQ but not both.
IFQ in Africa, Asia and Australasia had a maximum of four qualifying places. Those in
America and Europe hadat  least 12 places.
The starting field for the Open will be 156.
Those that qualified at Oakland Hills CC were, John Senden, Mike Putnam, Ryan Moore,
Charley Hoffman, Matt Kuchar, Anders Hultman, Briand Davis, Jerry Kelly, Sean O'Hair,

IZZO-MARIUCCI CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT ENDS AFTER 10TH YEAR
==============================================================
IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (AP) — A charity golf tournament hosted by Michigan State basketball
coach Tom Izzo and former Detroit Lions coach Steve Mariucci for the past decade has come
to an end.

Friday's 10th annual Izzo-Mariucci Classic at TimberStone Golf Course was the last. It has
raised millions of dollars for area charities, created a scholarship fund and left behind
a fitness center.
"Everything has to run its course," Izzo told The Daily News. "It's hard on
the community members and getting tougher to try to come up with new memorabilia."
Izzo, however, said it's not the end of community involvement for the 1972 Iron Mountain
High School graduates.

"We're not leaving and we're not bolting," Izzo said. "We're just putting
this to rest." The goal of the event, which included a tournament and auction, has
been to raise money for the community and its youth. "Most of what we wanted to do we
accomplished," said Mariucci, who was fired by the Lions in November 2005.
"People have worked so hard and given up so many hours for this event."

Meanwhile, the Iron Mountain City Council has approved, in concept, changing the address
of Iron Mountain High School from Prospect and A Street to Izzo Mariucci Way in a tribute
to the pair. "With this being the last tournament, we would like to do something for
these two guys," Tom Johnson, a member of the tournament's committee, told the
council during a special meeting on Monday.

NOTES FROM JOHN ROBINSON
===========================
* Editor's Note: John Robinson, one of Canada's most gifted architects and designer of The
Chief and Hawk's Eye http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/hawkseye/ in Bellaire, drops us a
note from time to time on his travels.  Robinson, has roughed out a par -3 course near The
Chief and Hawk's Eye, that may open in Spring 2008.  Anyway, he has worked with the
infamous John Daly and now has a new golf pro to work with.
"Hi Art: Just wanted to let you know that I am teamed up with Charley Hoffman winner
on the Desert Classic this year to design a new resort course on the ocean in Baja
California, Mexico.  I met Charley and visited the fantastic site June 14th.  The client
owns 2700 acres with over 6 miles of ocean front.  It is a pristine site with the entrance
road passing by hundreds of acres of vineyards, and vegetable fields and orchards.
Unbelievable when you know they only get about 4 inches of rain a year. Charley is very
interested in developing a name in the golf design business and actually went to college
wanting to be a landscape architect but got side tracked as he played so well on the golf
team.  Super nice guy and we look forward to doing many new courses together.  He’s one
guy I would like to pass the pen to down the road. John Robinson  - PS Had a good time
designing The Big Stick with John Daly but John is a bit side tracked these days and  his
manager set me up with Charley."

ROUNDS REBOUND IN MAY
=========================
After a dismal April when same-store rounds were down 15.1%, May rounds were up 5.4%. And,
because May typically has the largest volume of rounds of the first five months of the
year (about 12% of annual volume), the year-to-date deficit was more than cut in half,
from -9.0% through April to -3.9% through May.
The unusually high increase in the Northeast (19.1%) in May was partly because the region
rebounded from a very poor showing the year before. Although same-store rounds are down in
the nation as a whole year-to-date, two regions are up: Southwest (3.6%) and Northwest
(3.4%).

==============================================================================
WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ARCHIE, EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT BUNKERS
==============================================================================
Nearly everyone who plays golf knows that bunkers are supposed to be hazards. That's how
the Rules of Golf, define them--"A bunker is a hazard consisting of a prepared area
of ground, often a hollow, from which turf or soil has been removed or replaced with sand
or the like."

For golfers, the object should be to avoid them.
But for golf course superintendents, the subject of bunker maintenance is often a subject
that falls under the category of “Hazardous Duty.”
In fact, that's the title of a seminar offered by the Golf Course Superintendents
Association of America. Taught by Robert M. Randquist, GCSAA board member and Certified
Golf Course Superintendent at Boca Rio Golf Club in Boca Raton , Fla., the course helps
GCSAA superintendents understand the complex and often contentious subject.
According to Randquist, the difficulty of bunker maintenance begins with the fact that
both golfers and golf course superintendents exhibit a wide variation in how they look at
bunkers.
At one extreme you hear, “A bunker is a hazard, I shouldn’t have hit the ball here.” Or,
“Golf is like life, it’s not supposed to be fair.”
At the other extreme there are those who think, “I can’t believe how unfair this bunker
is. Even the best golfer in the world couldn’t get on the green from here.”
With such a wide range of opinions and expectations about bunkers place in the game, and
how they should be maintained, Randquist says it’s vitally important that golf course
superintendents, green committees, private owners, supervisors and tournament governing
bodies discuss the issue. Arriving at a consensus regarding playing conditions for the
course’s bunkers is important, but it is equally important that they determine if the golf
facility has the financial ability to provide those conditions on a regular basis.
The kinds of questions that must be answered include:
	•	Should a golfer ever have a buried lie in a bunker?
	•	Should a golf ball always roll back to the flat portion of the bunker?
	•	Is it possible to define the difference between a “fair” bunker and an unfair one?
	•	How often should golfers be able to get the ball out of a greenside bunker and into the
hole in two shots?
	•	How often should golfers be able to hit a shot from a fairway bunker onto the green?
	•	Should a golfer ever have to play a shot from underneath or against the lip of a
bunker?
	•	Should the sand surface be smooth or furrowed?
	•	Do the bunkers provide equal hazard to low and high handicap players?
The answers to these questions make it possible for the golf course superintendent to
define the expected difficulty of the course’s bunkers, establish a plan for bunker
maintenance that will deliver that level of difficulty and develop a budget for that level
of maintenance
