FERNANDES PITCHES IN FOR EAGLE* TO CLINCH THE MICHIGAN WOMEN’S OPEN
*Check out the Eagle on You Tube http://youtube.com/watch?v=sj8LcUDr-gw
========================================================================
CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN RESORT, MI –- Lisa Fernandes, a touring professional from Raliegh, NC,
shot 69 on Crystal Mountain Resort’s Mountain Ridge course Wednesday to win the 15th
Michigan Women’s Open presented by Century 21. Fernandes completed the $42,500
championship in rounds of 71-66-69 to finish with a tournament record 10-under-par, three
strokes ahead of LeAnna Wicks. The 30-year-old Ohio State alum who has conditional status
on the LPGA Tour, collected $5,700 for the win.
Clinging to a one-stroke lead in the 18th fairway, Fernandes pitched-in from 66 yards for
an eagle-3 to cement her victory in dramatic fashion.
“I knew I had to get it close because LeAnna had a close birdie putt. When I hit it, the
shot seemed lower than I wanted, but it took the first hop and kicked right. Then it
caught the edge of the hole and went in. Bam! It disappeared. I flung my club up in the
air and said, ‘“Wow, we’re done!’ said Fernandes, who began the final round three-shots
ahead of Wicks. Her only other professional win was on the West Coast. “This is the
highlight of my career. The way I handled myself with the lead going into the final round.
If I’m ever leading the US Open in the future, I’ll have this to draw upon.”
Ironically, she caddied for last year’s winner Kris Tamulis in last year’s Michigan
Women’s Open.
LeAnna Wicks, 27, a professional from Brighton, also shot 69 in the final round to finish
the tournament at 7-under-par.
She was also runner-up in the 2006 Michigan Women’s Open.
“The pitch-in for eagle was shocking,” said Wicks, a University of Michigan alum who has
conditional status on the LPGA Tour. “Even though it’s a second place finish I’m happy.
It’s the lowest under par I’ve ever finished and the first time I’ve ever put rounds in
the 60’s back to back.”
Wicks threw three consecutive birdies at Fernandes to open the back-nine.
“I feel like mentally I played much better this week. I tried to approach it like I
approach my non-competitive rounds,” said Wicks.
Wicks missed the cut in the lone LPGA event in which she competed this year. She’s
otherwise played five events on the Futures Tour.
Defending champion Tamulis, a 26-year-old touring professional from Onekama, was one of
only three players who finished the tournament under-par. She shot 67 in the final round
to finish at 6-under-par.
The lowest finishing amateur was Sara Brown, a Michigan State University senior who
completed the championship at 3-over-par. She received a $750 gift certificate.

BRAD DEAN, SCOTT WILSON AND MIKE COTE: CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN'S JUNIOR ELITE PROGRAM
=================================================================================
We continued our coverage of the Golf Digest top Michigan instructional programs with a
visit to Crystal Mountain and their heralded golf school. Golf Digest rated three members
of the Crystal Mountain staff; Brad Dean, Scott Wilson and Michael Cote in their top 17
Michigan golf instructors (see rankings).
For the past decade, Dean has been one of the top teachers in the state In fact, we
featured him on the cover of our '98 Golf Show Issue http://webgolfer.com/show98/index.ht ml His recent success is the Crystal Mountain Resort's Junior Elite Program. His stable
of young guns include Michigan Amateur winner, Korey Mahoney who is now a professional
and Ryan Brehm who won the Michigan Amateur this year as well as the Boilermaker
Invitational. While there, we also saw Dean working with a number of collegiate golfers
from Grand Valley, Michigan State University and Eastern Michigan University.
Of late, Bart Lower, former EMU player and Big Break II and IV contestant, has been
establishing his Michigan connections having moved back from Florida. Check out Terry
Moore's Interview with Brad Dean http://michigangolfer.tv/2006shows/crystalmountain/

15th Michigan Women’s Open presented by Century 21
We utilized one of the attributes of You Tube, the ability to quickly launch and present a
video to the world, and put Lisa Fernandes eagle up. We will be preparing a more in
depth show for use later in the year. Enjoy this one now at You Tube http://youtube.com/w atch?v=sj8LcUDr-gw
Western Amateur Preview Show
We had Robert Trent Jones, the designer of Point O'Woods, step up to the tee to begin the
show, picking up some of his thoughts in a 1987 video we shot. It was Jones who said that
" golfers attack par and the architect defends".
We then sprinkled into the mix, some footage from past winners of the Western Amateur;
Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickleson, Lanny Wadkins, Steve Melynk, Bubba Dickerson, Tiger
Woods, Ryan Moore & Jamie Lovemark. In addition, we give you a peek or two of this
storied course. This year's Western Amateur starts August 1 and runs through August 5.
Enjoy.

It is nice having some good news to report from EMU. The beleaguered institution, can
celebrate EMU golf coach, Bruce Cunningham and his EMU Eagles team for a season of great
play and great grades. The team finished with a 3.25 G.P.A for the year and Graham Hill
being named as an Academic All-American. On the course, the Eagles finished 95th in the
country as per the Golfstat rating. The Eagles won the MAC and competed in the NCAA
East Regional.

Former Eagle and Big Break break out star, Bart Lower, has returned home and is now
working with Brad Dean at Crystal Mountain Resort. Lower indicated that former EMU
star Kory Mahoney and MSU star and Michigan Amateur, Ryan Brehm are also on hand at the
Resort. Lower is branding this as "Brad Dean's Stable and The
Horses Inside." http://www.crystalmountain.com/golf/index.cfm?fuseaction=golfschools

MINZEY'S MUSINGS

A thief in Paris planned to steal some paintings from the Louvre. After careful planning,
he got past security, stole the paintings and made it safely to his van.
However, he was captured only two blocks away when his van ran out of gas.
When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such an obvious error, he
replied, "Monsieur, that is the reason I stole the paintings. I had no Monet to buy
Degas to make the Van Gogh."
(and you thought I didn't have De Gaulle to send this on to someone else.)
Well, I figure I have nothing Toulouse.
Thanks an a Tip of the Tam to Jack Minzey for passing this on

BALL MARKS ANYONE?
====================
In 1994, Softspikes changed golf forever by eliminating spike marks from golf greens and
having metal spikes banned at virtually every golf course in the U.S.
Today, a new war is underway to save golf greens and it’s being waged by private, public
and resort courses against ball marks, as they’re costing golf facilities millions of
dollars annually to address the issue.
The problem stems from the fact that while most golfers take the time to fix ball marks,
they do it completely wrong. In fact, by taking a standard ball mark repair tool and
fixing a mark, golfers are actually lifting the grass and killing the roots under the
mark, resulting in dead grass and a brown spot that takes upwards of 5 weeks to repair.
A recent study conducted by Kansas State University revealed that using a traditional
long-tonged ball mark repair tool will result in more damage to the green than simply
leaving a ball mark alone to heal on its own…but the answer is not to leave a ball mark
alone.
Given the vast amount of play on most golf courses, these ball marks never truly heal and
leave greens permanently marked up. This impacts putting significantly as golfers of all
levels have to putt over these dented marks and brown spots, instead of the pristine
greens that course operators spend millions to maintain.
Now, a simple, yet effective product has been developed that is dramatically improving
golf greens by enabling players and maintenance crews to properly repair ball marks. The
GreenFix Ball Mark Elimination System, which includes a patented, short-tonged ball mark
repair tool -- known as the GreenFix Wizard -- utilizes a simple “push” technique to
repair ball marks properly. Moreover, the tool is designed with a depth limiting feature
that prevents the tongs from damaging the roots, and it works!
The Method:
In the hands of an average golfer, a traditional long-tonged divot repair tool is a
damaging weapon. With the patented GreenFix Wizard, a golfer simply holds the tool at a
45 degree angle and “pushes” around the outside edges of the crater from the North, South,
East, and West. Next, the golfer taps down the mark firmly with a putter head, and the
ball mark is repaired properly. The prongs on the GreenFix Wizard are too short for
players to jab, lift, and twist, thus preventing a golfer from damaging the root system on
the ever so fragile greens. The “push” technique ultimately protects the roots, and
expedites the healing process.

AKERS ARE ACES WITH BERRY
===========================
Renown Michigan golf scribe, Jack Berry, dropped by his beloved MSU and offered this
note, "first time I'd been to Forest Akers since my days at the Free Press. What a
nice surprise. Fellow Spartan Art Hills really did a nice job with the revisions some
years ago and the pro shop area, connected to the Alumni Club and a conference center, is
terrific."
