Fernandes completed the $42,500 championship in rounds of 71-66-69 to finish with a tournament record 10-under-par, three strokes ahead of LeAnna Wicks. The 30-year-old Ohio State alum who has conditional status on the LPGA Tour, collected $5,700 for the win. Clinging to a one-stroke lead in the 18th fairway, Fernandes pitched-in from 66 yards for an eagle-3 to cement her victory in dramatic fashion. “I knew I had to get it close because LeAnna had a close birdie putt. When I hit it, the shot seemed lower than I wanted, but it took the first hop and kicked right. Then it caught the edge of the hole and went in. Bam! It disappeared. I flung my club up in the air and said, ‘“Wow, we’re done!’ said Fernandes, who began the final round three-shots ahead of Wicks. Her only other professional win was on the West Coast. “This is the highlight of my career. The way I handled myself with the lead going into the final round. If I’m ever leading the US Open in the future, I’ll have this to draw upon.” Ironically, she caddied for last year’s winner Kris Tamulis in last year’s Michigan Women’s Open. LeAnna Wicks, 27, a professional from Brighton, also shot 69 in the final round to finish the tournament at 7-under-par. She was also runner-up in the 2006 Michigan Women’s Open. “The pitch-in for eagle was shocking,” said Wicks, a University of Michigan alum who has conditional status on the LPGA Tour. “Even though it’s a second place finish I’m happy. It’s the lowest under par I’ve ever finished and the first time I’ve ever put rounds in the 60’s back to back.”  Wicks threw three consecutive birdies at Fernandes to open the back-nine. “I feel like mentally I played much better this week. I tried to approach it like I approach my non-competitive rounds,” said Wicks. Wicks missed the cut in the lone LPGA event in which she competed this year. She’s otherwise played five events on the Futures Tour. Defending champion Tamulis, a 26-year-old touring professional from Onekama, was one of only three players who finished the tournament under-par. She shot 67 in the final round to finish at 6-under-par. The lowest finishing amateur was Sara Brown, a Michigan State University senior who completed the championship at 3-over-par. She received a $750 gift certificate. 1st       Lisa Fernandes                  Raleigh, NC        71      66      69        206                $5700.00 2nd      LeAnna Wicks                   Brighton, MI         72      68      69        209                $4250.00 3rd       Kris Tamulis                      Onekama, MI      74      69      67        210                 $3300.00 4th       Moira Dunn                       Tampa, FL           71      75      70       216                $2266.67     Suzanne GreenRoebuck   Brighton, MI         72      74      70       216              $2266.67             Stacy Olson                      Grand Rapids,      75      71      70   216               $2266.67 Taken and edited from a Promedia release  Michael Patrick Shiels   ProTourMedia@aol.com Fernandes eagle  You Tube http://youtube.com/watch?v=sj8LcUDr-gw                                ================================================================================= BRAD DEAN, SCOTT WILSON AND MIKE COTE: CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN'S JUNIOR ELITE PROGRAM ================================================================================= We continued our coverage of the Golf Digest top Michigan instructional programs with a visit to Crystal Mountain and their heralded golf school.  Golf Digest rated three members of the Crystal Mountain staff;  Brad Dean, Scott Wilson and Michael Cote  in their  top 17 Michigan golf instructors (see rankings). For the past decade, Dean has been one of the top teachers in the state  In fact,  we featured him on the cover of our  '98 Golf Show Issue http://webgolfer.com/show98/index.ht

His recent success is the Crystal Mountain Resort's Junior Elite Program. His stable of young guns include Michigan Amateur winner, Korey Mahoney who is now a professional and  Ryan Brehm who won the Michigan Amateur this year as well as the Boilermaker Invitational. While there, we also saw Dean working with a  number of collegiate golfers from Grand Valley, Michigan State University and Eastern Michigan University.  Of late, Bart Lower, former EMU player and Big Break II and IV contestant, has been establishing his Michigan connections having moved back from Florida.  Check out Terry Moore's  Interview with Brad Dean http://michigangolfer.tv/2006shows/crystalmountain/ Look for an upcoming show with Brad and his Young Guns on Michigan Golfer Television.   Western Amateur Preview Show We had Robert Trent Jones, the designer of Point O'Woods, step up to the tee to begin the show, picking up some of his thoughts in a 1987 video we shot.  It was Jones who said that " golfers attack par and the architect defends". We then sprinkled into the mix,  some footage from past winners of the Western Amateur; Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickleson, Lanny Wadkins, Steve Melynk, Bubba Dickerson, Tiger Woods, Ryan Moore & Jamie Lovemark.  In addition, we give you a peek or two of  this storied course. This year's Western Amateur starts August 1 and runs through August 5. Enjoy. The beleaguered institution, can celebrate EMU golf coach, Bruce Cunningham and his EMU Eagles team for a season of great play and great grades.  The team finished with a 3.25 G.P.A for the year and  Graham Hill being named as an Academic All-American. On the course, the Eagles finished 95th in the country as per the  Golfstat rating. The Eagles won the MAC and competed in the  NCAA East Regional. http://www.emich.edu/focus_emu/050807/mensgolfchamps.html Former Eagle and Big Break break out star, Bart Lower, has returned home and is now working with Brad Dean at Crystal Mountain Resort. After careful planning, he got past security, stole the paintings and made it safely to his van. However, he was captured only two blocks away when his van ran out of gas. When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such an obvious error, he replied, "Monsieur, that is the reason I stole the paintings. I had no Monet to buy Degas to make the Van Gogh." (and you thought I didn't have De Gaulle to send this on to someone else.) Well, I figure I have nothing Toulouse. Thanks an a Tip of the Tam to Jack Minzey for passing this on ============================================================= MICHIGAN JUNIOR GOLF TOUR RESULTS  HELD AT TREETOPS RESORT ============================================================= These are the results from  the Michigan PGA Junior Tour sponsored by Carls GolfLand and Nike Golf. Moreover, the tool is designed with a depth limiting feature that prevents the tongs from damaging the roots, and it works! The Method:  In the hands of an average golfer, a traditional long-tonged divot repair tool is a damaging weapon.  With the patented GreenFix Wizard, a golfer simply holds the tool at a 45 degree angle and “pushes” around the outside edges of the crater from the North, South, East, and West.  Next, the golfer taps down the mark firmly with a putter head, and the ball mark is repaired properly.  The prongs on the GreenFix Wizard are too short for players to jab, lift, and twist, thus preventing a golfer from damaging the root system on the ever so fragile greens.  The “push” technique ultimately protects the roots, and expedites the healing process. What a nice surprise.
