U OF M'S HARRIS WINS 88TH DETROIT NEWSPAPERS MICHIGAN OPEN-by Tim Hygh
Michael Harris, a 27-year-old touring professional from Troy, shot 69 on The Bear in Thursdayıs fourth and final round to win the 88th Detroit Newspapers Michigan Open Championship. With rounds of 67-67-65-69 (268) Harris finished the championship at 20-under-par the lowest four round total ever shot on The Bear at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. The record-setting performance allowed Harris to finish six strokes ahead of Colby Beckstrom, a Muskegon rookie professional who closed with a 69 for a total of 14-under-par. Harrisıs share of the $110,000 purse is $13,000. Beckstrom, a past Michigan Amateur champion competing in his first event as a professional, collected $8,4000.

³I donıt think you ever stand on the first tee of The Bear and think youıre going to shoot 20-under, but if you take it one day at a time, hit the right shots at the right time, you can get there. Still, I wouldnıt have believed it,² said Harris, who made the Michigan Open his first-ever four-round victory as a professional. ³I started out today wanting to break 70 in all four rounds. It was a lot windier today and a lot tougher, and the pins were tough. You have to respect that on a tough golf course. I knew the putter was there and I knew my game was still there, I just had to have the patience to let it come through.²

Harris, a three-time all Big Ten golfer has twice won the three-round Michigan PGA Tournament of Champions since he left the University of Michigan in 2000. Heıs finished as runner-up four times during his Canadian Tour career and, with earnings just under $30,000 in six events this year, ranks eighth on the Canadian Tourıs Order of Merit. He has also played on the PGA Tourıs Nationwide Tour.

Harris began the day with a six shot lead over 22-year-old Beckstrom, who had been attending Texas Christian University but turned professional when he was eliminated from last weekıs Michigan Amateur Championship. Harris tried to quash any uprising by making 20 and 30-foot birdie putts on the first two holes.

³I played as hard as I could and it was almost impossible to catch him - one little falter and I might have been back in it. I never gave up hope, but he just doesnıt falter and he doesnıt make mistakes, ² said Beckstrom, who hung tough and tightened his deficit to three strokes by the eighth hole - before losing momentum with a bogey on the ninth and letting Harris cruise away with a pitch-in eagle on the par-five 10th. ³The eagle he made said to me ŒItıs not going to happen.ı But the biggest learning experience this week was showing myself that I could do it.²

Beckstromıs 14-under finish would have tied the four-round championship record on The Bear had it not been eclipsed by Harrisıs 20-under.

³Thatıs the game. He could have shot 19-under and lost. Thatıs the game, though,² said Harris. A lot of professional golf is timing. You have to play well on the right week. Sometimes itıs just Œyour time,ı and I think this week was it for me.²

Nevertheless, Beckstrom was pleased with his second-place finish and $8,400 pay day. ³Iıve been dreaming of this day forever. My goal was to win my first professional event and I got close. I put everything I had into it,² said Beckstrom, who had never even seen The Bear other than a lone, pre-round practice tournament.

Third-place finisher Corey Mahoney, from Crystal Mountain and Eastern Michigan University, was also the championshipıs lowest amateur finisher, with a four-round total of 277 (11.)

Scott Hebert, a five-time Michigan Open champion who won all of those titles at Grand Traverse and once worked as an assistant professional at The Bear, began the day in third place eight strokes behind Harris, but the Sunnybrook Country Club assistant professional limped in with a 3-over-par 75 to finish the event at 6-under-par.

ING PAR 3 SHOOTOUT-NORTH ALL THE WAY-by Terry Moore
Exchanging his ESPN microphone for a putter, color analyst Andy North rolled in a 17-foot birdie putt on the 12th hole in the ING Par 3 Shootout at Treetops Resort to set the stage for a $220,000 skin in the made-for-TV event earlier this week. Later validating the skin with a par on the next hole, North was the big winner in the two-day event which featured Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples and CBS Golf commentator Gary McCord. North, the two-time US Open champion, capped off his day by taking the last skin in a playoff for $60,000 and thus earning over the two days $350,000. The most North had ever won on Tour for the entire year had been $212, 268. The event was taped and aired on Monday and Tuesday nights on ESPN2 lending a hefty publicity boost to Treetops and northern Michigan golf. On Wednesday, ESPN SportsCenter included two ³Top Ten² highlights from the Shootout: Northıs birdie putt and Couplesı near miss of an ace on the 14th hole.

Par 3 Notebook: Michiganıs John Morse played in the pro-am portion of the Shootout. Competing on the Nationwide PGA TOUR circuit, Morse says physically heıs in much better condition thanks to Celebrex, the non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory medicine.  Morse has three years before being eligible for the lucrative Champions Tour circuitŠ.Mickelson said his goals are to play 4-5 more years on TOUR, concentrating on winning majors and then spending more time with his familyŠMickelson hinted at collaborating with Rick Smith on additions to the Treetops Resort, including possibly another golf course or a family attraction such as a water parkŠ.Northıs early pick to win the British Open is Tiger Woods, saying he interviewed Tiger after the Memorial and Tiger told him that was the first tourney he completely trusted his revamped swing. Only a balky putter at Pinehurst prevented Woods from winning the Open according to NorthŠ.Overheard player chatter while miked: McCord recalled aski ng Miller Barber once how many aces he had made. Mimicking the high pitched voice of Mr. X, McCord said Barber told him, ³24 aces and 12 of them were for cars.²Š.North revealed a TOUR line after Couples made a birdie putt on one hole: ³That was a jet fuel putt, wasnıt it?"

Bellaire
Shanty Creek Resort
It was a beautiful day at Shanty Creek. It seems they were doing a robust business on The Legend and Summit course, as well. The resort features a number of great courses and storied designers; Cedar River by Tom Weiskopf, The Summit by William Diddel, The Legend by Arnold Palmer and Schuss Mountain by Warner Bowen. When people talk about northern Michigan golf, this is a protype of the experience. Great service, terrific tradition, beautiful landscaping, Shanty Creek seems to have it all. They also have a July 4th weekend special on lodging. Eric and Stephanie, a couple of former FSU golf management students were on hand to help people enjoy a great experience. Roger Gieseck is the Director of Golf for the Resort.

Starting August 19, with the Detroit Newspapers Michigan PGA Pro-Am followed by the Detroit Newspapers Michigan PGA Championship and ending on August 25, Shanty Creek will host some of Michigan's best golfers.

Boyne Falls
The new Avalanche Bay at Boyne's Grand Mountain Lodge is an over the top hit. We stopped by Avalanche Bay early in the morning and it was packed. The Grand Mountain Lodge is spectacular in every way, a very exciting property. I will have to admit to a little lump in my throat when I saw that they named the grill, Everett's for the late Everett Kircher.

Clare
The Doherty Hotel, The Emerald at Maple Creek
While The Emerald at Maple Creek is not in Clare, it is a partner of the golf packages offered at the Doherty Hotel. We had the chance to feature, owner, Jim Doherty on our "Par for the Course" radio show last week and he indicated that the Canadian market has been a robust one for them. The Doherty also packages with, Winding Brook, Bucks Run, Eagle Glen, Firefly, Hidden Oaks, The Pines, Riverwood, Snow Snake, Pohlcat, St. Ives and Tullymore. At The Emerald at Maple Creek, Ed Kelbel continues to continue his tradition of terrific management.

Et Tu Brutus?
Yes, Brutus does have two fine golf courses; Hidden River Golf and Casting Club and Maple Ridge Golf Club.

Hidden River Golf and Casting is a knock out course, which highlighed the continued growth of W. Bruce Matthews. III architectual skills. Matthews is now a principal of the Marywood Gofl Course in Battle Creek.

Roger Wilson and Darin Philport, owners of Hidden River, have managed to make their course a must play course for those heading north. They are offering dinner music to accompany their beautiful restaurant and outside grill. Hidden River is a upscale destination, with an excellent golf course.

Jack Angott, owner of Maple Ridge Golf Course, had upgraded the course by renovating four holes. In addition, he built a new clubhouse and elevated the status of the property. The facility currently has an 18 hole course and an 18 hole executive course. Unfortunately, Angott, who had worked so hard at renovating the place, passed away this May. The family is in the process of deciding what they will do with the property.

Elk Rapids
Donald Ross stopped by Elk Rapids in 1922 and designed a nine hole layout out that has pretty much stayed the same since it opened in 1923. Wayne Kilcherman, Pro Shop manager, who recently retired from his teaching duties at Traverse City Schools a few years ago, now works with the Director of Golf, Chris Drummond, to keep this gem polished. A new wrinkle at the club this year, was the establishment of starting times. The nine hole course is closed on Wednesdays for club members, but generally open to the public the rest of the week.. If you want to avail yourself of a starting time, you can now call 231-264-8891.

Ellsworth
Antrim Dells
The quality of the clubhouse at Antrim Dells now matches the course. Antrim Dells, a favorite of designer,Jerry Matthews, has had a recent renovatton of their clubhouse. The deck now has a beautiful view of the Grand Traverse Bay http://antrimdellsgolf.com

Gaylord
Black Forest
Jeff Luczak, Assistant Professional at Black Forest, was on hand to help customers when we arrived. He is part of The Osprey management team that has made and is continuing to make improvements at this 36 hole complex. They have a new patio and veranda for the Osprey Grill. Plans are also underway to expand the parking lot which was always a problem at the club. Osprey Recreational Properties manage Manistee National, The Medalist, Ridge View as well as the Wilderness Valley property. Black Forest continues to gather interest from golfers who are attracted by the designs of Tom Doak.

Natural & Marsh Ridge
Larry Bowden, new owner of Marsh Ridge Resort , is in the process of renovating the resort properties into condominiums. The first one has already sold and four others should be available by fall. Marsh Ridge has long been one of Northern Michigan's most unique and desirable four-season resorts. The resort offers play at Marsh Ridge Golf Course, designed by Mike Husby and The Natural, one of Jerry Matthews great courses.

Otsego Club
The Otsego Club is offering some great lodging rates to go with their 54-Hole Blowout. Mark Hogan, PGA Professional, indicated that June rounds have been up and that the new combination of The Tribute and the new Forest Dunes Golf Course has been a hit. Scott Chesley, VP of Real Estate Sales, indicated that sales have been brisk at the Otsego Club. The new cabins on the course have also been attracting interest.

Harbor Springs
True North-MGN had a delightful afternoon hanging out with the Jim Engh crew at the True North Grand Opening. Engh has been one of the hottest architects in the business. In fact, he was the Architect of the Year for Golf Digest in 2003. Engh was so pleased by the work of Superintendent Steve Sump and his grow in crew that he brought out staff members from his Colorado office to see how great the course turned out. There were others on hand to check out the course as well. Norm Browning and Kevin O'Brien from Tullymore were on hand and Bernie Friedrich from Boyne stopped by. MG-TV was on hand to tape the opening and so was our reporter, Jack Berry. We will bring the show to you next week.

Indian River
Indian River Golf Club
Indian River Golf Club was originally built in 1922 by a group from Columbus Beach, a private beach community at Indian River. The original nine was reconfigured and a second nine was added in 1986. Warner Bowen was the course architect. The clubhouse was extensively renovated in 1995 and a driving range added in 2000. Dave Marsh is the Club Manager and Pat Whitman is the Course Superintendent.

Kingsley
The Kingsley Club
The 2005 Hickory Shaft Open attracted golfers from 10 states as well as many cities throughout Michigan. Leading the contingent of golfers, was hickory club collector, teacher and author; Dr. Gary Wiren. Wiren has ties to Michigan through his Master's degree from U of M, his marriage and coaching. Of late, he has been an instructor in residence at The Kingsley Club and will be there until July 5th. Dave Plassman is the Kingsley Club professional.

There are a number of hickory shaft tournaments in Michigan, with the Kingsley Shaft Open being the most renown. Other "Hickory" tournament are at Elmbrook GC in Traverse City and Wawashkamo GC on Mackinac Island.

Lake Ann
Mistwood GC
Mistwood GC, the 27 hole layout just outside of Traverse City, is adding another course, a par 3, within its new housing project. The course is modeled after the very successful par 3 at Black River CC. The new layout was due to open in July, but the opening has been postponed to August, due to a late installation of the irrigation system. The original 27 holes were designed by Jerry Matthews, but the new par 3 course was done by a local designer. Gregory Gay is the PGA Professional at Mistwood

Mancelona
Schuss Moutain GC @Shanty Creek has always been one of those eye candy resorts to me. I first went there as a skier and then later as a golfer. Schuss Mountain, was a worthy opponent on the slopes and the Warner Bowen course design on Schuss Mountain GC an equal challenge. The cottages fit very nicely within the immediate village. Schuss is a beautiful place to play golf and ski. Eric Durance, a junior at Albion College was on hand to greet early morning golfers. Roger Gieseck, formerly at Schuss, is now the head of all of Shanty Creek golf.

Williamsburg
High Pointe GC, Tom Doak's first golf design, has matured into a wonderful layout. I still remember the grand opening of the course in 1989. The day was miserable as a steady, but warm, rain continued most of the day. It caught our foursome about the 3rd hole and never let up. A number of media and invited guests hung it up, but our group labored on, not necessarily for the love of the game, but it was just such a fascinating course, we just had to see how it turned out. It turned out great and Ton Doak's career has never wavered. High Pointe is one of Michigan's signature courses.

VOZZA WINS 94TH MICHIGAN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Throughout the week at the 94th Michigan Amateur at Muskegon Country Club sponsored by GMAC Mortgage -- Christian Vozza hammered away at the Donald Ross-designed course and the competition en route to his championship win.

³This course favors the bombers, especially if youıre putting well,² Vozza said. ³I was a little nervous coming out of the gate (but) I bombed my drive on hole No. 3 and drained the putt, which got my rhythm going.²

Vozza went into the lead, 1up, on the fourth hole and never looked back, defeating Patrick Wilkes-Krier, 5 and 4, in the final match.

It wasnıt just Vozzaıs distance that won the match, said Wilkes-Krier. ³I felt fine and I was doing what I wanted to do,² he said. ³You can hit the ball great, but itıs won on the green . . . you win a tournament by making putts and he made a lot of them.²

The victory by Vozza, senior-to-be at the University of Michigan, was yet another in a five year ³youth movement² trend at the Michigan Amateur. The last time an over 25 player won the event was in 2000. The last five champions have all been college age. This yearıs final four were all aged 23 and under. Only two players over age 25 made the Sweet 16. Taken and edited from a Tonia Branch press release. visit http://www.gam.org.

WHITE LAKE GOLF CLUB ALSO A BENDELOW DESIGN?
Art,
You had a note last week on White Lake GC, (Whitehall, MI) that states that the course was laid out by  E.E. Roberts in 1916.   My brother, Jack Bendelow, who has lived in Montague since 1950, knows the White Lake course well and had information from a former White Lake greens keeper that Tom Bendelow did the design in 1916.

Incidentally, we induct Tom Bendelow Into the Illinois PGA Hall of Fame on October 21, 2005

Best wishes.  Stuart Bendelow

MIKE SHIELS HANGING OUT WITH "THE DONALD"
Michael Patrick Shiels, a Michigan-based author and writer, assisted in the writing of Donald Trumpıs newest book titled: Trump The Best Golf Advice I Ever Received. Trump is known worldwide for his business and real estate acumen, and as host of the hit NBC show ³The Apprentice,² but in recent forays into the golf business, ³The Donald² has built or acquired four exclusive golf courses.

The 316-page book, published by Crown, was released in June, and features the words of Trumpıs associates and colleagues sharing the best golf advice theyıve been given. The book includes golf stars such as Arnold Palmer, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, and Gary Player, but also includes non-golf luminaries such as actors Michael Douglas and Burt Reynolds; sports figures Yogi Berra and Jerry West; and assorted CEOıs.

Well-known people with Michigan connections also appeared in the book, including LPGA Tour players Elaine Crosby and Meg Mallon; golf course architects Arthur Hills and Tom Doak; and Detroit Pistons coach Larry Brown.

³I believe their words will help all of us enjoy the game of golf more,² Trump writes in the book.³Mr. Trump never asked me to give him the best golf advice I ever received, but Iıve learned from his example that you certainly learn more with your mouth closed than with it opened,² said Shiels.

Shiels, who grew up in Detroitıs Downriver Area, has authored or collaborated on six other books, including J.P. McCarthy Just Donıt Tell Œem Where I Am; The Works of Art Golf Course Designs of Arthur Hills; and Good Bounces and Bad Lies, the autobiography of Emmy Award winning CBS TV golf analyst Ben Wright. His most recent title, Golfıs Short Game For Dummies, published in April, was released in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and in Europe.
