MGN ON THE ROAD
Hannibal, Missouri
Mark Twain called golf "a good walk spoiled." Mark Twain visited
Hannibal a few times later in his life, but I doubt that he played at
the Hannibal CC, as it came on board in 1903 and he passed away in 1910.
Hannibal is a nice nine hole golf course that sits back on one of the
bluffs in the city. My lovely bridge Jennie, was born in Hannibal and
it was a nice place to spend the 4th.

his 6th win. Kevin Helm, CEO of the Michigan PGA, steps up to the

MICHIGAN GOLFER ONLINE READERSHIP TOPS THE ONE MILLION MARK
http://michigangolfer.com
In 1995, we put the Michigan Golfer online
for the first time. Unfortunately, we were a tad naive at that time and
lost our first year of content in a dispute with our former webmaster.
Bummer. However, we carried on continuing to put up story after story
year after year. Our year to date statistics show our readership (page
views) to be over a million. As you can see by the numbers below, we
dropped down in 2004, when we discontinued the print issues of the
Michigan Golfer and went totally digital. We rebounded in 2005 and we are
kicking butt this year. Within these figures, there are over 38,000
pdf downloads of our Michigan Golfer Online Magazine this past year. Our
print run prior to our last issue was 22,500 per issue. Last year, we
had an average readership of over 9,500 who dowloaded the magazine. Our
goal was to reach 22,500 in five years and we are on target.
In addition, we have had 561,683 viewers watch at least one of our 250
Michigan Golfer Internet television shows in the past 12 months. And
just as reruns are popular on television, many of our viewers are
watching shows we did three, four and five years ago. Is this a great
country or what?

WESTERN AMATEUR AT POINT O'WOODS
Do yourself a favor and attend the Western Amateur coming up later this
month. In a time of shrinking state tournaments, this is still a great
one. Incidentally, Fred Reeder, the former pro at Point O'Woods has
started the Fred Reeder Golf Academy and now has two locations in the
Grand Rapids area. Fred, long known as a top PGA instructor, is a disciple
of David Ledbetter, and a member of the Nike Teaching Staff. You can

MC CONNELL TO DEFEND AT MICHIGAN WOMEN'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
The Michigan Womenıs Amateur Championship celebrates its 90th year in
2006 by holding this yearıs tournament at the prestigious Barton
Hills Country Club in Barton Hills just outside of Ann Arbor, MI July 10-14.
Established in 1919, Barton Hills is a Donald Ross designed course that
is nestled in the countryside of Ann Arbor. The classic course has been
modified over the years by Arthur Hills, but retains a definite Ross
flavor.
³Arthur Hills has taken off some of the Donald Ross bunkers that
bothered the higher handicap ladies,² said GAM governor and longtime Barton
Hills member Betty Richart. ³Don Rossı theory was to avoid the bunkers
by aiming away from them. We laugh about it because there had been a big
push to go back to all of the details that Ross originally put into the
course, but the membership voted not to do that at this time.²
Barton Hills played host to the 1998 US Womenıs Amateur and this week
will be set up as it was for that championship. The Michigan Womenıs
Amateur was hosted by Barton Hills in 1968 and 1995 making it the third
time the course has hosted the tournament. Radrick Farms hosted the
tournament in 1992 and 2005. Country Club of Detroit and Plum Hollow
Country Club have each hosted the tournament five times.
³Donald Ross is a favorite of amateur women golfers and we are very
excited to host this tournament,² said Richart. ³We feel it is a different
feel than Radrick Farms, which hosted the tournament last year, and we
are also very excited to have the championship in Ann Arbor for the
second year in a row. Radrick Farms and Barton Hills have both been very
generous to womenıs golf.²
Mandi McConnell will be back to defend her 2005 championship and the
field will also feature past Michigan Womenıs Amateur Champions Joan
Garety and Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll. Players in the field of 76 range in age
from 15 to 67.
The Michigan Womenıs Amateur, now conducted by the Golf Association of
Michigan, will begin with 18 holes of stroke play on Monday, July 10
and 18 holes of stroke play on Tuesday, July 11 to determine the
32-player match play field. If necessary, a hole-by-hole playoff will take
place immediately following the completion of Tuesdayıs round to cut the
field to exactly 32 players.
Match play begins on Wednesday which will cut the field to 16 players
who will be honored at the annual Sweet Sixteen Dinner that night. Match
play continues on Thursday and Friday with two rounds of matches per
day. The 18-hole Championship match is set for Friday afternoon.
The championship is open to all amateur golfers residing in Michigan
with a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 15.4.

FORD SENIOR PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE
Gary Player, Chi Chi Rodriguez and Lee Trevino have all
received Commissionerıs exemptions and will compete in this yearıs Championship.
Fred Funk, who turned 50 on June 14th, is exempt into the field by
virtue of his 2005 PLAYERS Championship victory. With these four players
already in the field, the top 74 committed players from the Ford Senior
Players Championship points list will compete in this yearıs event. As of
today, Hale Irwin, John Bland, Raymond Floyd and Dave Stockton have not
committed. If the field remains as is, Mark McCumber will be the last player
in at No. 78.
USA and CBS will televise all four rounds of the Ford Senior Players
Championship live from the Tournament Players Club Michigan. The air
times are:
Thursday, July 13 USA 2:00-4:00 p.m. (ET Live)
Friday, July 14 USA 2:00-4:00 p.m. (ET Live)
Saturday, July 15 CBS 4:00-6:00 p.m. (ET Live)
Sunday, July 16 CBS 4:00-6:00 p.m. (ET Live)
Former Major League pitcher Rick Rhoden will make his first appearance
at the Ford Senior Players Championship this year. A
two-time All-Star (1976, 1986), Rhoden played 16 years in the majors
with the Dodgers, Pirates, Yankees and Astros. He finished 12th at last
yearıs Champions Tour National Qualifying Tournament and is conditionally
exempt this year. He posted his best career finish at the 2003
Allianz Championship when he was T5. Rhoden competed several times against
the Detroit Tigers during his two-year stint in the American League with the
Yankees (1987-88). He had a career mark of 3-3 vs. Detroit with two
of those wins coming against Jack Morris.

WORLD GOLF HALL OF FAME UNVEILS SPECIAL EXHIBIT IN CELEBRATION OF 2006
RYDER CUP
In honor of the 2006 Ryder Cup, the World Golf Hall of Fame and
Waterford Crystal, an official sponsor of the 2006 Ryder Cup, have unveiled a
special exhibit at the Waterford Crystal Visitor Center in Kilbarry,
Waterford, Ireland. The exhibit, "The World Golf Hall of Fame and
Waterford Crystal Present: A Tribute to the Ryder Cup" features the stories of
Hall of Fame members who have participated on or captained Ryder Cup
teams over the years. The exhibit will move to the National Museum of
Ireland - Decorative Arts & History at Collins Barracks in Dublin for the
months of August and September 2006, then return to Waterford through
Summer 2007.
The project marks the first time the World Golf Hall of Fame has opened
an exhibit outside of its museum in St. Augustine, Florida, and
collaborated with another museum to present an exhibit. The display is
expected to draw in excess of 500,000 visitors between the two locations
throughout its seventeen-month stay in Ireland.
The exhibit in Ireland provides a historical overview of The Ryder Cup,
including the origin of The Matches, scores, venues and captains, and
video of significant Ryder Cup moments. From wartime matches of the
1940s to the story of Nicklaus and Jacklin's "concession" in 1969 and
comeback prediction by Crenshaw (U.S. Captain) in 1999, the exhibits looks
at significant moments in the history of the tournament through the
achievements of the Hall's members.

THE SILENT TREATMENT
A man and his wife were having some problems at home and were giving
each other the silent treatment. Suddenly, the man realized that the
next day, he would need his wife to wake him at 5:00 AM for an early
morning tee time.
Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and LOSE), he wrote
on a piece of paper, "Please wake me at 5:00 AM." He left it where he
knew she would find it. The next morning, the man woke up, only to
discover it was 7:00 AM and he had missed his tee time. Furious, he was
about to go and see why his wife hadn't wakened him, when he noticed a
piece of paper by the bed. The paper said, "It is 5:00 AM. Wake up."
Men are not equipped for these kinds of contests.
Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Jack Minzey for this sleeper.

PALMER WITHDRAWS FROM SENIOR OPEN
The following is a statement issued today by Arnold Palmer:
³It is with great regret that I have come to the very difficult
decision to advise the USGA that I am withdrawing from the upcoming U.S.
Senior Open at Prairie Dunes. I have spent considerable time over the past
few weeks attempting without success to bring my game up to acceptable
standards to play in this important national championship. In my
judgment, my golf right now is far below the level that I would feel
comfortable with as a bona fide contestant. I hope that the fans who have
given me such wonderful support over the years will understand and accept
this decision.²
Background Information
Arnold Palmer won the 1981 U.S. Senior Open at Oakland Hills Country
Club, Birmingham, Michigan, the first year he was eligible to play in the
championship. He defeated Bill Casper and Bob Stone in an 18-hole
playoff. Palmer played in the next 24 Senior Opens through last yearıs
championship at NCR Country Club, Dayton, Ohio. Palmerıs last competitive
appearance was in the Wendyıs Champions Skins Game at Wailea, Hawaii,
in February. His most recent Champions Tour start was in the
Administaff Small Business Classic at Houston, Texas, last October.
