AUGUST
=======
August rushes by like desert rainfall,
A flood of frenzied upheaval,
Expected,
But still catching me unprepared.
Like a matchflame
Bursting on the scene,
Heat and haze of crimson sunsets.
Like a dream
Of moon and dark barely recalled,
A moment,
Shadows caught in a blink.
Like a quick kiss;
One wishes for more
But it suddenly turns to leave,
Dragging summer away.

FOWLER TAKES LEAD AT WESTERN AMATEUR
=======================================
Rickie Fowler maintained his mastery of Point O’Woods Golf & Country Club on Thursday,
turning in a 2-under-par 68 after an opening round 65 to build a two-stroke lead at
7-under-par 133 through 36 holes in the 105th Western Amateur Championship.

Fowler, the 2005 Western Junior champion, is playing in his first Western Amateur but is
scoring like a veteran at the nation’s second-oldest amateur golf tournament. He hit 17
greens in regulation in his second competitive round at the Point.

Fowler led a field of 58 players who made the 36-hole cut at 144 or better.

The nation’s top amateur golfers are competing in the 105th Western Amateur championship,
with the remaining 58 competitors set to play 36 holes on Friday. The low 16 after
Friday’s rounds qualify for match play on Saturday. The championship match will be held on
Sunday, August 5.

SUMMER ISSUE OF THE MICHIGAN GOLFER MAGAZINE-NOW ONLINE
		Vol 25. No. 2http://michigangolfer.com/summer07/index.html
=================================================================
In our summer issue, Jack Berry pitches in with his thoughts about Michigan golf in the
summertime and then profiles  this year's  Michigan Golf Hall of Fame inductees. Kelly
Hill caught up with the Pohlcat's John Brehm, a principal in a number of properties in Mt.
Pleasant, who is also the uncle of MSU star, Ryan Brehm, a friend of the PGA's Dan Pohl
and Doug Labelle.  Dave Ruthenberg brings us an interview with Tom Gillis, who recently
picked up 11K at the Buick Open in his battle to regain his PGA card. Art McCafferty
updates us on Michigan's depleted tournament scene and  takes another look at the
involvement of Chick Harbert in the design of A-Ga-Ming's Torch course.. The GCSAA has
authored a  killer article on  "Quick Facts About Golf" and finally Terry Moore
adds another chapter in his "Slice of Life" series. Our cover features Antrim
Dells Golf Course.  Cheers and good reading.

Gull Lake View Resort- Gull Lake East and West, Stonehedge North and South and Bedford
Valley
We stopped by both the Gull Lake View East and West courses and then three miles down the
road, the Stonehedge North and South courses, this past Saturday and the parking lots were
full.  Most of the places we have visited in lower Michigan have had solid play.

The Scott family, who have won a ton of awards and kudos for the deft management of their
90 holes of golf and real estate development, are now into their third generation of
family administration.

The original, West, 18-hole course was designed and built by Darl Scott in 1963. Ten years
later the family designed the East course, site of this year's MGCOA League Championship
Series. In 1988, Charles Scott, designed the third of their five course holdings with the
opening of Stonehedge South.  The fourth course, Stonehedge North was designed by both
Charles Scott and Jon Scott and was brought on line in 1995.  The family also bought  the
renowned Bedford Valley.  Bedford Valley in 1988. Bedford  Valley, designed by William
Mitchell,  has hosted a number of major Michigan championships.

We had the opportunity to chat with Head PGA Golf Professional, Wes Wandell and his son
Robbie,  a rising young high school star. Wandell is now in his 17th year as head
professional at the Gull Lake complex.  He provides the teaching philosophy for the
resort, oversees the well appointed golf shops at the three locations and relaxes by
playing golf with his two sons, 12 and 16, who can "grip it and rip it" with the
best in the area.

Yarrow Golf and Conference Center This was my second visit to Yarrow, the first coming before the, Ray Hearn designed course,  officially opened. The resort has always been a little tough to find, as it is just a tad off the beaten path.  Formerly a corporate retreat for getting away from it all, things changed when a tornado roared through the resort and  took down thousands of trees.  With the sudden emergence of all this "open" space, the owner, a member of the Pulte family,  decided to build a golf course.  The Ray Hearn design is one of his best. The richness of the hotel and conference center suggest that only those high on the  corporate ladder are to be found there. We were draining the last portion of an adult beverage, when a golfer from Chicago volunteered that he found the golf excellent , the course superb and the cost surprising inexpensive. "This would be a hundred dollar course in Chicago," he said. The management of the complex is in veteran hands, as   Toby Hilton, formerly the golf marketing person at the McCamly Hotel in Battle Creek and Steve Helner, formerly the golf professional at The Natural in Gaylord, have both signed on. While these are fairly substantial holdings, the real power of the Osprey Group is in the management of over five million square feet of office space.  The recent golf purchases have resulted from the surplus of golf properties now on the market.  There are some spectacular opportunities in golf if you have the capital and Osprey seems to have it. They bought entire Otsego Club complex for 4.1 million.  Ten years before the purchase, the property might have sold for three times that amount. Bruce Williams is the head professional at the course.  Their website describes Ridgeview as  “an excellent choice  for senior players, families and  kids wanting to play the game at a relaxed pace.”    http://www.ridgeviewgolf.com/page/308-15322.htm ============================================= MICHIGAN WOMEN IN 2007 U.S. WOMEN'S AMATEUR ============================================= Stephany Fleet of Dewitt and Laura Kueny of Whitehall are representing Michigan women in the  U.S. Women’s Amateur starting Monday at the par 36-36--72, 6,595-yard Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.   HISTORY: The U.S. Women’s Amateur is one of the United States Golf Association’s original three championships. Bivens, LPGA commissioner, and Zayra Calderon, president and CEO of the Duramed Futures Tour, have announced that the LPGA has acquired the Duramed Futures Tour effective immediately.  The Duramed Futures Tour has been the official developmental tour of the LPGA since 1999 and offers rising stars in the women’s game the opportunity to prepare for a career on the LPGA.  In recent years the organizations have worked closely to assist the members of both tours with professional development, and to prepare members of the Futures Tour for the transition to the LPGA. LPGA Tour cards are awarded to the top five money leaders on the tour. "We are absolutely delighted that we have reached an agreement for the LPGA to acquire the Duramed Futures Tour," Bivens said. ========================================================================== 2007 CARL'S GOLFLAND/NIKE GOLF MICHIGAN PGA JUNIOR TOUR @ THOUSAND OAKS ========================================================================== Steven Barbour shoots a sizzling 65 to win the Boys 13-15 Division at Thousand Oaks Golf Club in Grand Rapids, Michigan It was a scorecard that included 10 birdies on route to a score of 65 at a very difficult Thousand Oaks Golf Club on Tuesday, July 31st that gave Steven Barbour the Boys 13-15 title. This gave him an 8 shot victory over second place finisher Kyle McInerney of Davision, Michigan who shot 73. Steven is 15 years old and will be a sophomore next year at East Grand Rapids High School. In the Boys 16-18 Division it took a one hole playoff for Tony Casciano of Traverse City, Michigan to win his division. Tony defeated Chet Vandenberg of Martin, MI, both players had great rounds of even par 72. Tony is the current Player of the Year point leader with one regular season event on left on Thursday at Prestwick Village, followed by the Tour Championship at The Fortress in Frankenmuth, Michigan on August 8th, 9th. In the Girls 16- 18 Division Maddi Massa recorded a score of 4 over par 76 to take the title. Maddi is from Holt, Michigan and will be attending Michigan State University next fall. In the Girls 13-15 Division Chelsea Guoynes of Traverse City, Michigan shot an 84 which gave her a two shot victory over Mariah Massa, the younger sister of Maddi. ===================================== TOM BENDELOW IS FORGOTTEN NO MORE ===================================== We just got a note from Stuart Bendelwo, indicating that the ASGCA has created a link to more information about his grandfather and pioneer golf architect, Tom Bendelow.  http://golfarchitects.lib.msu.edu/pre-ASGCA/bendelowt/ A Michigan Bendelow Sampler Albion GClb Huron Hills Golf Course Bay City CC Michicago CC Birmingham Golf Club Bloomfield Hills CC Charlotte CC Redford CC Wawonowin Golf Course Escanaba CC Flint CC Grand Beach CC Atlas Valley CC (Flint Golf Course) Spring Lake CC Grand Rapids Elks CC Highlands CC Mosanic CC Park System Hillsdale Golf & CC Portage Lake CC Golf Club Ella Sharp Park Golf Club Meadow Heights CC Big Course Kalamazoo CC - Short Course Riverside CC Manistee Golf & CC New Hotel Course Mullet Lake Golf & CC Muskegan CC Niles Golf Club Plymouth Rark Golf Course Northport Point Golf and CC Owosso Golf Club Port Huron Golf and CC Stag Island Golf Club Gull Lake CC Red Run Golf Club Royal Oak Golf Club Saginaw CC South Haven Golf Club Traverse City Golf & CC White Lake Golf Course Duck Lake Golf Course ======================================================================================== THE PGA OF AMERICA AND UNITED STATES GOLF ASSOCIATION PROMOTE FIRST PATRIOT GOLF DAY ======================================================================================== The nation’s first Patriot Golf Day, a joint initiative of The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association, will be conducted Sept. 1, and enlist the support of public and private golf facilities across the country. On Sept. 1, public golf courses nationwide will request an additional $1 for each green fee they process, while private facilities will ask patrons to contribute donations. The funds will go to support families of those who have become disabled or lost their lives in the line of military duty. PGA Professional Dan Rooney of Stillwater, Okla., is spearheading the program to raise funds through the organization, Wounded Warriors, Inc. (HTTP//www.WoundedWarriors.org).  Rooney is both an F-16 pilot in the 125th Fighter Squadron of the Oklahoma Air National Guard and a member of The PGA of America. Rooney and his father, John, became the owners of Grand Haven Golf Course in Michigan in 1998, and the younger Rooney spends about 20 days per month at the course and the other 10 days flying. Rooney has logged two tours to Iraq, and following his most recent tour he began to think of ways he could stay involved in the war effort. “The PGA of America is proud to have a member like Dan Rooney,” said PGA of America President Brian Whitcomb. “The PGA of America’s purpose is to support our member professionals, and when one of our own came to us with such a brilliant idea and rewarding cause, we wrapped our arms around it and said we would do whatever it takes to support him and give back to those who have given everything.” "The United States Golf Association proudly supports this worthy cause,” said USGA President Walter W. Driver Jr. “Thousands of our volunteers regularly give to the game and we hope the same spirit and generosity will prevail this day. Millions of golfers making a small contribution will make a large impact." For more information or to make a donation, visit HTTP://www.PlayGolfAmerica.com or www.FallenHeroesFoundation.org.   ================================ THINK SANTA AND COOL THOUGHTS ================================ Former golf professional at Inverness and now photographer extraordinaire, Dale Perne of IPI Michigan , asked us to pass on this cooldown note as we go through the dog days of summer.  He wanted golf course personnel to know that his  firm does Santa photography during the winter months.   Three of his gigs last year were at Dearborn CC, Birmingham CC and Prestwick Village. So there you have it, another way to squeeze some much needed cash from your golf facility in the months where bills continue to come in fast and cash comes in slow. In the morning semi-finals of the Championship Flight, Razmig Boghikian of West Bloomfield defeated Jason May of Sterling Heights 3 &2.  In the other match 2004 Match Play Champion Russ Cunningham of Dewitt edged Mike King of Livonia 1 up in 20 holes. =============================================================================== MICHIGAN PGA 2007 CARL'S GOLFLAND/NIKE GOLF JUNIOR TOUR- BOYNE'S MOOR COURSE =============================================================================== Boys 16 -18  1 Andrew Walukonis Traverse City, MI 72-69--141 -3  2 Niklas Ahola gladstone mi 76-74--150 +6  3 Tony Casciano Traverse City, MI 79-72--151 +7  T4 J.D.
